yes that was the town. they spoke to the correspondent in the elgarve and she said that basically, a man was seen with a child in a supermarket, and that the child didn't look overly happy about being there with him, and that when someone challenged him, he drove away in his car with the child.

sarahinphuket · 08/05/2007 18:24

from the Daily Mail online

Police have set up roadblocks around the
Portuguese town of Nelas after a man was reportedly spotted with a child matching the description of Madeleine McCann.

Nelas is an inland town roughly some 500km to the north of Praia da Luz, the resort where Madeleine was staying with her parents when she disappeared five days ago.

The man was reportedly described as bald with a ponytail. He was said to be pushing a "reluctant" child who did not appear to speak Portuguese.

Police are said to be analysing CCTV footage from a supermarket in Nelas and may be sending the footage on to Madeleine's parents

Sparkler1 · 08/05/2007 18:25

oh dear God please let it be her!

TeeJaye · 08/05/2007 18:25

Sorry, I've stretched the thread but it wouldn't link in the normal way.

sarahinphuket · 08/05/2007 18:27

sorry that was from Mail on Sunday not Daily Mail.

I want to go to bed (its 1230am here) but I want to hear about the news conference...

Judy1234 · 08/05/2007 18:28

I hope so. Interesting points on R4 just now from a Portugues man about how in Britain the police feed public greed for news and in Portugal they get on with solving crimes without the distraction of pointless press conferences and pandering to prurient "public interest" which seems to have some merit. British policing was like that 20 years ago.

ScoobyDooooo · 08/05/2007 18:29

Sound quite promising i really hope this is her she really needs her family

mommajools · 08/05/2007 18:32

portugese ambasador speaking in portugese

Gameboy · 08/05/2007 18:34

(Surely that 'InTheNews' headline should be 'sighting' not 'citing'

mommajools · 08/05/2007 18:34

police have interviewed 100 people,
350 reportings/leads investigated

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 08/05/2007 18:35

press conference no news. they've searched 500 apartments and questioned 100 people but no resolution. no mention of this development and request for no questions at the end.

I really hope this report is accurate and not a false trail.

mommajools · 08/05/2007 18:36

they just said Nelas was a false alarm

TeeJaye · 08/05/2007 18:36

The sighting was a false alarm.

popsycal · 08/05/2007 18:36

omg

ScoobyDooooo · 08/05/2007 18:38
Sad
mommajools · 08/05/2007 18:39

police said nothing to report, still continuing, only clues they have are fron the apartment

sarahinphuket · 08/05/2007 18:40

I really have to go to bed now otherwise I will never get up for work in the morning.

Would someone be willing to email me if there is any news in the night? [email protected] This thread is so long now that it is faster for me to open my email rather than load up the thread...

thanks

mommajools · 08/05/2007 18:40

some details they cant report - its the law

wannaBeWhateverIWannaBe · 08/05/2007 18:41

edam · 08/05/2007 18:44

Oh Lord, so sad that it wasn't Madelaine.

quietmouse · 08/05/2007 19:21

oh god, I just can't bear the thought of a paedophile ring. I so hope they are wrong

kid · 08/05/2007 19:24

I was really hoping it was Madeleine

I hope the police have other leads they can follow up that bring her back home to her family really soon.

PinkChick · 08/05/2007 19:29
