Cannot believe that a 7 year old girl has been stabbed to death.

Katie, aged 7 was stabbed to death in the street.

I know someone has been arrested (and that's not for discussion)

I just feel so horrendously sad for this little girls family. 7 years old and such a brutal death.

Heartbreaking.

Well...

Tbh, this reminds me of a thread where I was basically blasted by certain users for saying DH and I would insist on DD knowing some sort of basic self defence.

MycatsaPirate · 10/01/2017 19:41

piglet I honestly don't remember any. I know that children have been abducted obviously and I know that there are family incidents where children have been victims but this seems just to be a random attack on a child in the street.

She would only have been in year 2.

Sadly speculation will always happen. As unpleasant as it is it's human nature. I'm in Yorkshire and am seeing posts shared on FB practically naming the teenage girl and guessing at her alleged links to the poor victim without a shred of evidence as to what actually happened. That along with the revolting 'hang her' posts. What has happened is horrific but do these people think they're actually helping by spouting bile?

Fallonjamie · 10/01/2017 19:42

I think people can be shocked and sad without commenting on the Internet.

And there have been high-profile similar cases before and many more that the majority of the population don't know about.

1horatio · 10/01/2017 19:43

And no, I'm not blaming the parents or the little girl or saying that she could have prevented this.

It just reminded me of the comments where certain users were flabbergasted (to be nice) that somebody would insist on self defence.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 10/01/2017 19:44

Hi everyone,
We have heard from the OP, she thinks it's best for the thread to go to In The News or Crime. Given that we don't know what has happened, really, we think In The News is the better choice for the moment. We will move it presently.

TinselTwins · 10/01/2017 19:44

Why is the teenager that has been arrested not up for discussion?

If the teenager is guilty then it could affect any trial against her if the public have already formed an opinion about it
If they teenager is not guilty, well…

1horatio · 10/01/2017 19:44

Or is it self Defense? Hmm

Well, Selbstverteidigung... oops. Have to look it up.

"Today 19:25 LiviaDrusillaAugusta

It just seems a little ghoulish"

I hate posts like this. Its normal-
In fact it's a good idea for all sorts of reasons- to discuss current affairs. When did posters start thinking it was ok to probe and criticise strangers for doing just that?

Anyway it's an awful tragedy. I've just read the mirror article which is one of the many that say she was stabbed. The person has been arrested which is pretty serious. They are of course innocent until proven guilty (as we are all aware) but let's hope they can help the family and police understand what happened so justice can be served if necessary

What a horrible smug and idiotic post. I know of exactly zero self defense classes that'ld give a 7yr old a hope in hell against a 15yr old with a weapon (if that's what happened). For all you know the 7yr old might have been a dab hand at martial arts!

You are not allowed to prejudice any case that may be brought.

1horatio · 10/01/2017 19:51

tinsel

Trainspotting1984 · 10/01/2017 19:52

For gods sake piglet no one here knows who the teenager is or what happened - they are not going to prejudice the case Hmm that a bit more serious than new chat

QueenMortificado · 10/01/2017 19:52

1horatio that's a pretty insensitive and irrelevant thing to bring up on this thread.

QueenMortificado · 10/01/2017 19:53

How do you know Trainspotting? There is every chance that a child's parents / neighbour's / relatives are on a parenting forum. Or that a case is brought and a member of the jury is.

Fallonjamie · 10/01/2017 19:54

I know people want to talk about things and I am obviously biased here as was close to a high-profile tragedy.

It becomes public property and it's hard to deal with. In my case there was a thread on here which had a great deal of speculation and self-absorbed comments (as elsewhere on the Internet) and it made things 1000 times more painful.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 10/01/2017 19:54

For gods sake piglet no one here knows who the teenager is or what happened

Tell that to MNHQ then who have deleted posts of people who were talking about the teenager.

No need to be so rude either.

Trainspotting1984 · 10/01/2017 19:55

No there isn't every chance at all. Even if there was, how could people who know nothing about it prejudice it?

Discussing news stories on forums is a perfectly standard thing to do

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 10/01/2017 19:56

I heard it on the radio on the way home, devastating. Her poor family 💐

Trainspotting1984 · 10/01/2017 19:56

I'm not meaning to be rude piglet, sorry. I think it's pretty rude to shut down conversation too though.

TheThingsWeAdmitOnMN · 10/01/2017 19:57

FallonJamie 💐

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 10/01/2017 19:57

As I say, take it up with MNHQ who obviously think like I and other posters do, otherwise posts wouldn't have been deleted.

1horatio · 10/01/2017 19:58

Probably not more irrelevant than this thread...?

Seeing as somebody above was so surprised it was a child. I just felt like this attitude was very similar to what I encountered on that thread.

I know somebody whose child was intentionally run over whilst they were taking a stroll. Maybe I'm just less... Idk. Surpsied and therefore come off as insensitive.

AtSea1979 · 10/01/2017 19:59

That's because I jumped the gun and questioned why she would do it and that was massively wrong on my part as I don't know any more details than anyone else here.
