How sad. Inside a gay nightclub, they say there are hostages and the shooter could have an explosive

News currently reporting 50 dead. Absolutely horrific.

EdithWeston · 12/06/2016 15:41

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-36512308

DorynownotFloundering · 12/06/2016 15:46

Shame on you for using this tragic event to post a "Leave" message.

HildurOdegard · 12/06/2016 15:46

Just watched the life statements on sky half an hour ago. Couldn't comprehend 50 dead, was thinking/hoping he meant 50 waiting for ambulances.

50 dead? Awful. Their poor families.

I literally don't think I can bear to watch Trump make political capital out of this.

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 12/06/2016 15:51

"It has nothing to do with the basic real religion but as ever the interpretation of it by a very small but fanatical number ( as a percentage of the whole Muslim community) sadly usually radicalised men. "

So true.

And only yesterday was much of the US celebrating the life of a Muslim, who spoke out against the things he believed were wrong. Including when people tarred all Muslims as terrorists.

Just5minswithDacre · 12/06/2016 15:52

CNN are reporting that it is the worst mass shooting in US history Sad

DorynownotFloundering · 12/06/2016 16:03

Just

Quite, I'm sure he is writing a speech as we watch the terrible new unfold.

MyBeloved · 12/06/2016 16:08

Tel Aviv suffered a mass shooting last weekend during Pride Week, now this during Pride Week in Orlando.

Sincerest condolences to everyone involved and may there be no more hate crime of ANY description.

DorynownotFloundering · 12/06/2016 16:10

Apparently they are running out of blood due to the severity of some of the injuries and so....

"The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-FL) is calling on the Muslim community to take part in a blood donation drive for those injured in the attack."

Northernlurker · 12/06/2016 16:11

This is so terrible :(

ThoraGruntwhistle · 12/06/2016 16:17

Why does none of it make any difference to their attitude about guns? The fact is, if they had gun laws like the UK etc, mass shootings wouldn't be happening. Why do they insist that mass shootings can be solved by more people having guns? Sad

SenecaFalls · 12/06/2016 16:21

I live in Florida, not too far from Orlando. There are indeed appeals for blood donations, especially from universal donors.

This is just horrific. So sad for everyone, but especially for the families who have lost loved ones, some of whom are still waiting for news.

MackerelOfFact · 12/06/2016 16:33

I'm just watching on BBC News 24. Just horrendous.

In most civilised countries, when there's a mass shooting, you know it's some kind of organised criminal organisation (and very likely to be terrorism). In America you have no idea if it's a terrorist or just your garden variety nutter with an agenda. I have no idea why they think this is fine.

My heart goes out to everyone involved in this shooting. Sadly I bet there are going to be families who have no idea their friend or loved one is gay and are currently happily assuming they are safe.

lemonpoppyseed · 12/06/2016 17:07

Terrible news from Orlando. As a country, the US should have stepped up after the Newton school shootings. But nothing was done. And once killing children becomes acceptable, what hope does society have?

MissJM1 · 12/06/2016 17:07

Yes the singer was the girl from The Voice. Not sure if it could be related, very strange to have that happen Friday night then a mass shooting in the early hours of Sunday morning, who knows?

I have a friend in the states, a very intelligent lady who is actually an attorney, and I'm aghast when I've heard her talking about "shopping for a gun" the same way we would go shopping for clothes.

It's just bizarre

HildurOdegard · 12/06/2016 17:10

I read earlier that per capita head, Switzerland has as many guns as the US. Can anyone corroborate?

MissJM1 · 12/06/2016 17:17

Worst mass shooting in recent US history

Orlando has declared a state of emergency

Just horrific

Obama to speak about this at 5:30pm (our time)

Wordsaremything · 12/06/2016 17:21

I suspect the debate rightly or wrongly will be more about national security than gun control. It appears to have been an ideologically inspired hate crime. I agree American attitudes towards guns are bizarre. There is none of the visceral instinctive fear that we have.

Those poor people. Imagine the terror. And the families waiting for news. Just awful.
