Terrible news from Sweden

This case is so sad. A young care worker has been killed and she was alone in the child refugee centre at night. I can't believe she was left alone to care for 11 refugees after all the recent concerns. There are various news articles about it on the web.

Politicians have made a hell of a mistake in my opinion allowing thousands of migrants into the EU unchecked. Sadly it is this poor, poor young woman who has paid the price.

AMouseLivedinaWindMill · 26/01/2016 22:26

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3417669/Police-flee-lives-Swedish-migrant-camp-surrounded-screaming-mob-try-relocate-ten-year-old-boy-raped-multiple-times.html

^^ its all terrifying. Terrifying. I would say its pretty broken Cellar.

The police have said they cannot contain the situation and they have been underfunded for years. This is merely showing huge gaps already there. And on top of the migrant crisis there is also the threat of ISIS. How can they keep anyone safe in all this chaos?

Bluebolt · 26/01/2016 22:32

If there had been another member of staff it could be two dead, unless joined at the hip extra staff cannot guarantee the safety. If we begin blaming staff then Sweden and other countries are going to need much higher ratios especially if the incident of the Police being too outnumbered to rescue a 10 year old boy from being continually raped is true. We need to lay the blame where it falls, deflecting feeds the far right and empowers the minority to feel that whatever they do is justifiable.

Fitzers · 26/01/2016 22:33

I agree with Words, it's possible to apportion blame totally to the person who committed the crime and also to conclude that leaving someone alone with so many young men is not the right approach. No blame at all falls on the victim, but the system certainly should be changed.

Fitzers · 26/01/2016 22:35

Who is blaming the staff Bluebolt? Something like this is in no way their fault. I do however think more staff on site would increase the safety of all.

amarmai · 26/01/2016 22:44

Same thing happened to a young sw left in charge of male teenagers on her own. Cut backs? I taught in a refugee program for 3 years and can confirm lies about age - in order to get more edu- caused a lot of problems in a primary school. Dentists can tell age by teeth development so this is easy enuf to prevent. Not enuf just to bring refugees into a country. More checking needs to be done re physical and mental health.

Qwebec · 26/01/2016 22:49

How can a 23 YO man pretend to be 15 and get away with it?

The people involved in the mob resisting/attacking police in the asylum should be tried/expelled. If it is not done i guess it is bc the situation in more muddy than it appears does anyone know about the sanctions?

The attack against the 22yo girl is terrible, and finding solutions to prevent it happening again does not make the murderer less responsible.

Here a bus driver got attacked by a passenger, the man had consequences, but it did not prevent the bus company to install better safegards to protect it's drivers.
It seems common sense to me and in no way makes the attacker less guilty Confused

Hedgehogsdontbite · 26/01/2016 22:50

There's something very fishy about that Daily Mail article. I hadn't heard anything about it and can't find details in any of the Swedish national papers (although I'm unwell so have limited brain processing power). The only Swedish account I can find is the local newspaper which mentions nothing about a 10 year old and says police were called because staff were having problems relocating residents to another site.

It's also rather strange that 10 armed police officers ran away from a group of unarmed angry people approaching them in a corridor.

There is some bad stuff going on in Sweden, give me the name of a country where there isn't, but day to day life goes on as normal. The only difference I've noticed is a massive precautionary police presence around the centre of Göteborg.

Hedgehogsdontbite · 26/01/2016 22:52

The centre where this tragic incident took place had previously been reported to the inspectors because of concerns about staffing levels. It was investigated and given the all clear. So the system definitely needs to be scrutinised.

Elendon · 26/01/2016 22:57

The police in Sweden are armed with at least a Sig Saur pistol.

Only Norway, Iceland and the UK (not Northern Ireland), have unarmed officers.

And no 22 year old woman was ever stabbed in this country by a white man ever.

realitybitescake · 26/01/2016 23:13

Why are any of you trying to find excuses for what happened? My father's family were WW2 refugees whose property/land was turned into a Soviet airbase. They wouldn't have dreamed of asking for this and that or complaining. They were too scared they would get thrown back. These 'refugees' are not afraid to demand, to complain, to commit crimes, to lie, to throw away their IDs, because Europe is too weak to throw them out. That is the truth. In other countries if you commit a crime they put you on a plane and send you out, that very day. I witnessed this very thing while living in Grand Cayman, a British expat got into a bar fight and the that same day the local police stuck him on a plane back to the UK. Why can't Europe do that? If they came from the ocean with no ID go drop them back in the ocean!

ArcheryAnnie · 26/01/2016 23:19

This is just horribly awful. What is also awful is using the murder of one young woman by one violent man to make a case against child refugees in general.

Some adult men cheat the system and pretend to be minors. Some adult men cheat the system pretending to be all sorts of things. Too many men (of all religions and races) are repeatedly and extremely violent to women, and think women don't really matter in the scheme of things.

There are women asylum seekers as well as women staff, and the safety of both sets of women should be given the highest priority. This awful case should mean all the agencies seek to put in place proper protections both for female staff, and for the women (and the minors) who are housed in the refuges.

LuluJakey1 · 26/01/2016 23:27

'It's the killer's fault, but if the killer is a traumatised 14-17 year old refugee then they may not be fully culpable.
Having a lone worker at a centre like this is a huge breach of health and safety though.'

Only in England could we take an event that is another example of how dangerous and unacceptable to our way of life some of these male refugees' behaviour and attitudes to women are, and blame it on a lapse in health and safety standards in the country that has taken them in. God forbid that any of what they do would be their own fault.

Mass sexual assaults in Cologne-put Western women under curfew, stop them wearing provocative clothing (two of the suggestions made by German politicians). Thefts from local people in Germany- poor refugees haven't got much. Women being shouted at and verbally abused in the streets (provocative clothing again and it's just that these men have a diifferent culture). Now a woman helping them is murdered by one of them and it is not their fault, it is a health and safety lapse. FFS!

It is completely unacceptable behaviour by men from the middle-east, Afghanistan and Africa. It is abhorrent and as a woman I have a right to say their attitudes to and treatment of women is disgusting and I want them nowhere near me or my life. We have fought for over a century to have the rights - equality and safety and personal freedom of choice- we have in this country and I intend to keep them, not have them eroded by these cultures that we all seem afraid to speak up and say treat women as worthless or worse.

BettyBleue · 26/01/2016 23:33

I totally agree with you LuluJakey

ArcheryAnnie · 26/01/2016 23:39

What about the women from those cultures? What about the kids? What about the decent men who would not dream of doing that?

Are you going to drop all the other men who behave violently towards women into the sea, too? Or do you reserve the death penalty for violent brown men only, and violent white men get to carry on as before?

Violent men of all religions and races should be punished to the full extent of the law. Other refugees who have committed no crimes other than to be desperate should not be punished alongside them.

unlucky83 · 26/01/2016 23:39

Lying about your age in these circumstances is not new...
DPs father (now dead) was an immigrant to France 50 yrs ago and he lied about his age ....DP is not sure why - he didn't pretend to be a child - DP thinks he made himself older so he could retire sooner...
And I have had the same experience as amarmai -I used to work in an inner London school -we had a 10yr old boy who looked much older - he had facial hair and towered above the rest of the class. I commented on it to a teacher and she said he probably was - they found (mainly boys) from that background seemed a lot older than their peers - they had been told they thought the longer they were in school the better the education they got -so they said they were younger (and the school had lowered the age children of both sexes got ready for gym together because of it). Worse they had children from another background who parents seemed to do the opposite - said the children were older than they were so they got through school faster ...apparently they had had a couple of classes with a probable age range of 5 -10 yo.

And Lulu - if you want to protect the rights of women I hope you have signed the petition petition.parliament.uk/petitions/119385

JaneJefferson · 26/01/2016 23:50

It is not an isolated incident though is it ArcheryAnnie, although this one must be one of the worst cases of violence so far. There have been many reports of violence or harassment towards women, by the asylum seekers. A continent cannot give what it has not got and we seem not have the means to cope with the behaviour of these new arrivals. They do not seem to care about acceptable conduct or fitting into our norms. Regarding age, if a migrant does not have id, a judgement should be made based on appearance not taking the word of the incomer. I despair of the situation in Europe and fear for our continent. Safety of our people should trump liberal migration policies.

unlucky83 · 26/01/2016 23:52

archery I think that is the reason we need to talk about it....the fact that all the good, honest genuine refugees are being tarnished by the behaviour of a few chancers...and we need to come down on those like a ton of bricks.
And we need to talk about it openly -acknowledge the problems and look at solutions -otherwise the only people who will talk about it are the far right and the consequences of that don't really bear thinking about.

(As an aside quite honestly I wouldn't mind if all men -of whatever colour or religion or background -who behaved violently towards women were thrown into the sea ...)

lorelei9 · 26/01/2016 23:58

Hedgehog, I'm having issues with my phine so I can't link
But I saw this on the Telegraph website at work
I can't see the DM link here but guess story is same

Re age, Owen Jones complained about being mistaken for a minor at 28. At a similar age, I answered my front door in tracksuit and hair in pony tail and got asked if my parents were home! Some people can definitely get away with it.

lorelei9 · 26/01/2016 23:59

Unlucky, the sea seems exactly the right place for such people!

PausingFlatly · 27/01/2016 00:10

Fuxache.

Might have passed you by (lucky you), but teenagers stabbing people to death actually is part of our culture. Big time.

It's a new and horrible thing that just wasn't a problem when I was at school. The knife crime rates amongst youngsters in London are horrific. London Teenage Murders

But yeah, come here and be all [sadface] about someone killed in another country while ignoring much larger numbers killed in your own. I guess they don't offer you an opportunity to tarnish "good, honest, genuine refugees", so they don't matter.Hmm

EmNetta · 27/01/2016 00:18

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned all the female nurses in NHS hospitals who are left alone in charge of a ward or a department, particularly at night, etc. The latest incident I came across was at a weekend, when I was greeted with relief by lone nurse in basement department, worrying about male prowler/patient coming and going. Whoever decides women should work alone when dealing with the public should think again.

IPityThePontipines · 27/01/2016 00:27

Pausing - Nice try, but people are too busy banging their little drums to listen.

People seem to very much want a two-tier legal system, one for "ordinary people" and nothing aside from deportation for not anyone not fortunate enough to be born in that country.

PausingFlatly · 27/01/2016 00:32

We only made it to 10th January before the first stabbing death of a teenager this year (in London; may have been sooner elsewhere in Britain for all I know): Boy, 16, fatally stabbed at birthday party in east London park.

I must have missed the sadface thread about that (it rates one - the continuing deaths are heartbreaking) and the faux concern about what a shame it is that good, honest Londoners will be tarred with the same brush.Hmm

HelenaDove · 27/01/2016 00:36

There has been a massive problem with knife crime in the UK for a long time. Brooke Kinsella has been campaigning against it for years. Her brother was killed in this way unfortunately.
