Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

"Make the young men give two years service to the military to "earn" their place in Britain?"
I don't think so. Train them up in the latest military skills? Better not, I think.

WRT a possible FB visual campaign... Could the symbolic imagery of New years / 2016 be used in any way to indicate that 2016 (and the future) will not see women's freedom of movement curtailed..? I dunno..

Do tell me to shut up if I'm barking up the wrong tree wrt to a FB image campaign along the lines of the French flag etc. I am not experienced in campaigning Blush Grin.

I am not a FB fan, although I am on it, I am not a regular user. After the paris attacks people used the French flag to show solidarity, the same happened for LGBT rights.

I was wondering where the FB campaign was. As you rigfhtly say, there was huge support for Paris, Pride etc.

AnnaForbes · 09/01/2016 11:21

I'm with you Pink.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 11:23

Last one I promise. If there are any marketing / designer people would you be abel to help create a picture which can be overlaid with profile pic?

Agree Pink, wasn't advocating anything just trying to generate a list of things, none of which I felt where the answer.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 09/01/2016 11:25

Maybe the 0 in the 2016 could be the symbol for woman. You know the circle with a cross dropping below it.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 11:30

Oh! Nice 2016 Thanks

I like the idea of an FB campaign,

I also looking liked the white feather idea a pp mentioned,

White feathers to indicate the cowardist of politicians and bloggers who are also willing to throw women under the bus.

Would it work to tweet an image of a white feather at them? (I do Twitter)

2016IsANewYearforMe · 09/01/2016 11:47

I think it could work. I don't know anyone with the skills though to make the wrap. I'd put it on my profile, but I don't think my left leaning friends would. They would probably decide it was racist! It's more palatable to excuse rape than to support women. Sad

2016IsANewYearforMe · 09/01/2016 11:48

Pink feather?

TwatTheNinja · 09/01/2016 11:49

That should say, I don't do Twitter

TwatTheNinja · 09/01/2016 11:50

Pinks too gimmicky, the white feather already has history, we'd just be using it to show a different form of cowardice

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 11:52

"but I don't think my left leaning friends would" i agree.

This thread has been extraordinary and sincere thanks to all who have contributed.

I sadly have extensive experience of this culture, both in the ME and mainland Europe and I think it is less an orchestrated ISIS attack than a taste of what is to come if we continue to allow terror of being called 'racist' silence this critical debate.

We are laughed at by this culture for our desperation to tie ourselves in knots defending the indefensible. For putting our desire to appear open-minded, understanding and tolerant before protecting our own civilisation.

For our alacrity to slag off the behaviour of our own men rather than protect the rights of our own women.

The heartbreak for me is the way that women have been so brainwashed by the terror of being thought racist.

Our own amazing poster MistressMia is regularly subject to astonishing vituperation by our sisters who cannot square her extensive knowledge and experience of the negative side of patriarchal Islamic future with their own need to be Right On Above Sisterhood.

I love the idea of a Facebook campaign and will also write to my MP - perhaps we could brainstorm some of the issues and wording?

Anyone have experience of political lobbying? I will do what I can.

InionEile · 09/01/2016 12:09

Absolutely GraceKelly, not a new issue at all. I lived in Brussels over a decade ago, as I mention upthread, and street harassment by men of Arab / North African background was a huge issue.

Even back then women were silenced when we tried to talk about it because no-one wanted to hear it and everyone was terrified of being racist. I always saw it as a form of protest from these men, far beyond just regular street harassment. It was a way to put us as women in our place, to send the message that we can think we are free but they can always harass, grope, assault or rape us so our freedoms are meaningless. It made me so angry at the time but no-one wanted to hear it because then they'd have to admit that the multicultural dream was not so simple as they thought.

And regarding the Germam journalist interview with the BBC mentioned upthread, she is lying if she says that ethnically German men harass women too. That is just not true. In all my time living there, there was sexism of course and the usual attitudes from some men, but never once did I ever get harassed on the street by ethnically German men. Occasionally I got hassle from Germans of Turkish / Arab origin ( I knew they were of that background because it would happen in typically Turkish neighborhoods) but never from 'German-Germans' for want of a better word.

carlajean · 09/01/2016 12:14

Don't hold your breath about Merkel toughening her stance about sending them home - it would only be safe in the countries they were returning to. Oh the irony!

BillSykesDog · 09/01/2016 12:15

More victim blaming, denial and questioning the truthfulness of the victims in the Grauniad.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/jan/09/the-left-must-admit-the-truth-about-the-assaults-on-women-in-cologne

"Allegedly assaulted women", "if this story is true". She even seems to think the fact they were able to plan and get away with the crime is a positive one for migration because it shows they have "an insight into European culture, albeit a negative one."

Fucking disgraceful.

White feather has abominable militarist connotations. Will be laughed out of court by anyone anti war.
