Just in case people want to continue discussing this.

And the thoughts of admitting more is just pure idiocy. Women and children only from now on.

hiddenhome2 · 09/01/2016 09:55

All this was sadly predictable though. Merkel's actions from now on are just a case of shutting the stable door now the horse has bolted.

She has placed Germany's citizens at huge risk and this is a sickening action Angry

How is it even legally possible for a leader to be able to make these decisions and do this to its country?

fourmummy · 09/01/2016 09:57

In 2016, Merkel will import hundreds of thousands more young, sexually aggressive, poorly educated North African and Muslim men who do not share the European progressive liberal world view - particularly in regard to women, So, then, what is this? Incompetent decision making, which goes on and on Confused or a strategy?

onthephone100 · 09/01/2016 09:58

I'm at the domplatz. Clear police presence. Looks like the place has been cleared of the usual street artists etc which gather. Lots of homeless though, men and women

hiddenhome it's not even just her country, it's the rest of Europe as well.
I was reading on another forum today, if she needed to increase the population she was looking in the wrong place. She should have invited people from Cambodia and places of that area. Hard working, fantastic people, an asset to any society.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 10:04

I though I was going to take a break from the thread but feel compelled to engage further. I do not want to elaborate much further than I did but I have a culturally pretty mixed family background and patriarchal attitudes to women, which i have first hand experience of have always bothered and angered me.

Igne thank you for the link to Einreiseland, I'll read it later.

Four, i am with you on this. NYE Cologne suggests that immigration is a problem, in part due to the demographic of the refugees and due to the 'blue-eyed' attitudes of some European to facilitate uncontrolled immigration.

But It is also ever so much about women's rights. I feel the events are massive a wake up call and I hope for a new wave of practical feminism.

What is the role and status of the 21st century women in a globalised society, in Europe and abroad? What are our rights? Were the last few decades in the west women's golden age? I hope not.

I do feel this is the time to challenge all violence and abuse against women (and children) and especially the thinking patterns supporting sexism. Our existing problems with gender based violence and sexism (many German men have very arrogant and dismissive attitudes towards us). For this to happen, no topic must be 'untouchable'.

Thank you onthe. Good luck today.I have read that there will be a right-wing and a counter protest. I fear that it might come to clashes. lets see.

Belgium is starting compulsory courses for asylum speakers wrt women's rights. They're denying it's anything to do with Cologne, which is minimised in this piece, but at least it's an acknowledgement that there is a problem. deredactie.be/cm/vrtnieuws.english/News/1.2540382

That Spiegel piece is interesting isn't it. So the police on the spot did see the problems at the time, but at the time chose to cover it up.

Moreshabbythanchic · 09/01/2016 10:12

Onthephone I heard on the BBC news this morning that there are going to be demonstrations by Perdiga in the square today, maybe explains the police presence. Apologies if I got this wrong I was still half asleep at the time.

GraceKellysLeftArm · 09/01/2016 10:13

In response to this being Isis led. No.

I'd completely forgotten until yesterday. Nye 2002 a man of "middle eastern or North African" appearance masterbated over my back in a Brussels bar as I chatted to an Australian man.

This problem is not new.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 10:16

It has become the first story on the BBC News site too.

Cologne attacks: Merkel considers tougher migrant laws

OP posts:
Moreshabbythanchic · 09/01/2016 10:26

I wonder how they are going to deport people when, as yet, no arrests have been made. Is this just talk to placate?

fourmummy · 09/01/2016 10:28

Pink All many women have been affected by patriarchy, and this is the crux of my argument. Although anathema to many feminists, especially the '70s feminists who prioritised sexual violence in their position, if the campaign is on the issue of sexual violence alone then you will continuously need to keep on campaigning, just tacking on other aspects as they pop us - 'immigration', 'ethnicity', 'poverty'. If you campaign on the issue of a belief system, which is what drives the broad patterns of behaviour where men can do things to women that women can't do to men, in this case patriarchy and the factors it is propped up by globally - religion, economics, politics - then you can get all the birds with one stone.

batshitlady · 09/01/2016 10:28

Sorry to keep repeating this all.. But all my (former) fave bloggers, and leftish media-watchdog websites have absolutely nothing to say on this. NOT A DICKIEBIRD. Democracy Now, World Wide Socialist Website, Red Pepper, The Lifeboat News, RT (Question everything) are all keeping schtum, hoping it all goes away. The facts don't seem to fit their political agenda it seems. Well, let's face it, it's only women innit! That, or they haven't quite figured out a way of blaming it on US/Israeli foreign policy yet.

Cowardly bastards. I'm fucking thorough with them...Saying that, Pergida are holding a rally/demo in Cologne today. They'll all find their collective voice against that I guarantee you.

As someone up thread correctly observed on the right or the left, being accused of 'racial/cultural prejudice' is way worse than seeing women bullied, sexually assaulted and raped.

YesEinsteinsMumDid · 09/01/2016 10:32

I am sure I read an article end of Nov/Dec time that Belgium had been following the progress of the education program that Norway had introduced with a view to bringing it in. So I don't think that is necessarily the case that Cologne has triggered it to be brought in, but it might have brought its implementation forwards.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 10:45

Four, this is ambitious, rightly so.
Would you be able to formulate a very rough aim?

I fear that as soon as 'patriarchy' is challenged openly most people shut down and disengage. Maybe due to 'academic' terminology. That's why i was thinking about a 'practical' feminism.

Along the lines of "Reclaim the night" but on many other practical aspects too.

I don't know i am thinking as I type.

These are some good debates/reports by The Young Turks.

The only problem I had with the first one was that it seemed to imply at one point that this was simply a cultural misunderstanding whereby the men, unused to seeing uncovered women, got the wrong end of the stick.

Obviously, in view of the crib sheets and the organised nature of that, it was far more than that. And this is addressed more in the second video.

You are absolutely right about this. We need to speak in plain, simple, accessible, non-elitist language. If you sounds too academic, people will turn right off.

LumelaMme · 09/01/2016 10:53

I was talking about Cologne to my 17 year old DD two evenings ago and said to her, you can just bet women's rights will ALWAYS be trumped by some other group's - those of immigrants, or of religious people (I say that as a Christian, woolly CofE variety), or some other minority or interest group.

I went through Cologne inter-railing many years ago. At the stage of my life I assumed life would get better for women in the ME, not worse. This all makes me incredibly sad.

So... what do we do? I'm going to take the suggestion upthread and email or write to my MP. He is a smug Conservative in a safe rural seat so I don't expect a great deal, but it has to be worth trying. I'll also be seeing some female friends later so I'll see if I can prompt them into action. I'm glad we've all moved on from raging (at the situation, and then a bit at each other) to seeing what we can do.

batshitlady · 09/01/2016 10:57

Of course it is Moreshabby Merkel has done her utmost to make the problem worse and is now pandering to public opinion. The chief of Cologne police was sacked but the vacuous, incompetent, victim-blaming Mayor, hangs on.

I've always voted for us having closer ties with Europe. I've changed my mind in a very big way. Voting for that I believed would give us better trade and cultural links. What have we got, business regulation coming out of our ears an over-fed, corrupt, ideological elite in Brussels (having our own one to fight against is enough) and waves upon wave of Muslim immigrants. With no understanding, experience or even concept of liberal democracy. Let alone what 'gender equality' is.

Merkel ??? Look I'm no fan of Cameron's, believe me, but whilst Merkel sat on her hands and was deathly silent, the UK gave £1bn to the refugee camps. Which helped the lives of 4 million refugees. That was more than all of Europe put together.

It was only when it became politically expedient that Merkel opened her arms and her mouth. But, did she mention the camps or commit Germany to assisting them? Of course not! All she's done is make sure Germany has enough Gastarbiters to fuel its economy and bolster its dangerously declining birth rate. She then started making her customary shallow statements about responsibility and humanity.

If she was truly concerned she would have done something to make the 4 million who can't afford or can't make the perilous journey to Germany. Instead, she's just invited those that can to risk their lives.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 11:00

I am not a FB fan, although I am on it, I am not a regular user. After the paris attacks people used the French flag to show solidarity, the same happened for LGBT rights.

Does anyone here feel this would be one medium to start a campaign?

...and women who were previously free to go out of an evening, will need to stay at home. Gay pride events had better watch out too.

The German nazi parties will see a surge in support after these events, all because Merkel wants a source of cheap labour.

And should Germany grant these people citizenship, they will be able to live and work over here (correct me if I'm wrong on that one).

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 11:04

A FB campaign directly targeting the "stay at home" and "keep at arm length" idiocy to start with.

Are there any marketing / design people here who could help?

OP posts:
2016IsANewYearforMe · 09/01/2016 11:04

I'd like to email my MP too.

I am just not sure what I am asking for. Is it to curtail immigration? Change the checks on immigrants? Have a greater police presence? Institute mandatory classes? Make the young men give two years service to the military to "earn" their place in Britain? I have no idea what the solution is.

Pinkchampchoccies · 09/01/2016 11:05

"A FB campaign directly" ... sorry brain dumping.
