She could still be roma and not be theirs? I was listening to the radio and they seemed to think that it was quite common within extended families for people to sometimes give away children for various reasons financial etc It is still illegal though even if given voluntarily so they would lie. Poor little thing.

filee777 · 19/10/2013 17:02

I wonder if we will ever find out what really happened to this little girl.

hettienne · 19/10/2013 17:48

She looks nothing like any Roma child I have ever met. The most typical colouring is southern European or Indian even - dark hair, brown eyes, tanned complexions. Lighter hair or blue/green eyes seems uncommon, I don't ever recall meeting such a pale, blonde Roma child or adult.

I also think she looks roma.

Do you see a lot of Scandie-looking blonde-haired blue eyed Roma around your way?

deepfriedsage · 19/10/2013 20:05

I gather an anthropologist is going to check her, so she and the police should know soon enough.

frasersmummy · 19/10/2013 22:37

Its odd that there is not a match for this little girl on the missing children register. ..someone somewhere must be missing her

noddyholder · 19/10/2013 23:00

No not around my way Smile but she doesn't look Scandinavian which I think is what you meant.

So how does she 'look' Roma then?

WasWats · 20/10/2013 09:56

frasersmummy That is exactly what I thought too when I heard it.

CoteDAzur · 20/10/2013 10:02

There is no register for such a missing child in the Greek registers.

Greece is asking for help from Interpol to check her against international registers of missing children.

Roma are travelling people. Around Greece there are myriad small countries from which she may have been taken.

BerstieSpotts · 20/10/2013 10:28

Yep, if they don't know what country she is from (which is likely) then they don't know which records to check. They can put out an international appeal but this won't necessarily reach the right country very fast.

WasWats · 20/10/2013 10:33

The poor girl must be terrified.

hettienne · 20/10/2013 13:26

She looks like she could be from anywhere from Russia, Germany, Poland, the UK - there must be a lot of different registers of missing children in various states of completeness to check.

KnittingAndCleaning · 20/10/2013 16:37

There is a video thought to be of the little girl when she was much younger. It looks like they were the only family she will remember having had. The lady was quite rough with the boy. I hope they locate all the 14 children and DNA check them all. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2468824/A-dummy-mouth-performing-camera-Video-shows-mystery-blonde-girl-centre-international-hunt-dancing-Roma-gypsies.html

ZZZenagain · 20/10/2013 17:34

I looked at that video. I don't think it is the same child.

bkgirl · 20/10/2013 19:36

No, obviously the child is every bit as priceless as ANY other child. The thing is many people have been following Madelaines disappearance from the start. My daughter is the same age and it really hit home at that time. The bitterness and apparent jealousy just because the Mc Canns are well off is just pathetic. Sure I can understand and totally empathise with being angry at the Mc Canns for leaving her in the first place BUT that has been common for years in resorts. I literally saw hundreds of parents sitting n bars while their kids were in the apartments. It was crazy.
The point is this little greek girl is someones child and I will bet she wasn't just given to the gypsies. The way they dressed the room to make it seem she was cared for is just manipulative. Lets hope trafficking can be tackled no matter who the child is, where they are from or how much or little their parents have in a bank.

IrnBruTheNoo · 20/10/2013 20:13

Thanks cranberry for linking the article about the birth registration system in Greece. Can definitely see how someone could exploit the system.

BanoffeeSplitz · 21/10/2013 02:17

Does no-one else remember the reports a couple of years ago, of Greek families forced to abandon their children when they couldn't afford to feed them?

Guardian & Daily Mail links for balance:

www.theguardian.com/world/2011/dec/28/greek-economic-crisis-children-victims

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2085163/Children-dumped-streets-Greek-parents-afford-them.html

Doesn't seem beyond belief that some may have ended up with Roma families, especially those that have a use for lots of children (begging, trafficking). Though I have no idea how easy it really is to abandon a child in Greece, beyond what I've read those articles.

Kefybaby · 21/10/2013 04:00

The DNA tests have indicated she is not Roma and she is not biologically linked to the people she was living with.

KnittingAndCleaning · 21/10/2013 16:45

I am just looking at the pictures on BBC News of the three of them. The Father figure of the girl could not look more different to her, it is no wonder that the police though they were not related.

KnittingAndCleaning · 21/10/2013 16:49

BBC site not updated yet however www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2470062/Gypsy-couple-appear-court-charges-abducting-year-old-Maria.html

YoureBeingADick · 21/10/2013 16:56

Her parents could be dead. They may have sold her or abandoned her and wont come forward. Horrible for the child if the roma family is all she has ever known but she must be given a fair chance of finding her parents.

IrnBruTheNoo · 21/10/2013 16:56

I cannot stop thinking of this case. You really have to wonder how 'foreign' the birth mother was though. Are we talking as far flung as Sweden? Geezo, can you imagine the distance just to abandon your baby?? Surely not...

nicename · 21/10/2013 16:58

I wonder if they will ever find her parents. Reports and now saying that the police were pointed to the same camp before in the Ben Needham case but didn't follow it up.

KnittingAndCleaning · 21/10/2013 17:10

IrnBru, I am not inclined to believe the story that the girl was given to them. How many stories have they had so far? The shoes in the bedroom are not all the same size. The last time I used crayons they didn't work on a carpet never mind shagpile, as when you put pressure on paper the crayon will tear it. I think the bedroom is a set up.
