Check the Daily Mail. There are more details in there usually.
Biological father is in this article

'The natural hair colour of some of Maria's siblings is shock too (it is real?)'

Yes, it is real. The father has an Albino gene. That must be quite rare.

"Her husband has an albino gene in his family that may have resulted in Maria’s blonde hair and pale complexion."

Hmm at the mail article referring to sasha ruseva as being 35 and her eldest daughter katya being 29, yet also saying sasha's first pregnancy was when she was 13. Hmm Hmm Hmm

claig · 26/10/2013 13:02

A lot of papers say that Sasha is 38

HopeForTheBest · 26/10/2013 13:05

Hmm at the claim that a woman of that name has been arrested twice in Greece for trying to sell babies...

It's so hopeless, so tragic. If even a tiny bit of all that's been reported about this story is true, it doesn't alter the fact that those children are being brought up in horrific conditins; this is the kind of poverty that you cannot believe of a country (Bulgaria) which is in the eu.

YoureBeingAnAnyFuckerFan · 26/10/2013 13:08

i'm dubious about a lot of the ages and 'facts' tbh. not just in the DM.

claig · 26/10/2013 13:14

I think this is very sad

"Chief Inspector Stoicho Kracholov told the Daily Mail: ‘The Rusev parents were questioned about Maria but not arrested. The main thing is to find out if these people are Maria’s parents.’

Child protection officers yesterday said even if the Rusevs are Maria’s parents she would not be released into their custody.

Child protection worker Diana Kaneva said: ‘If Maria is coming back to Bulgaria she will be placed in a child crisis centre. We will find her new parents that will adopt her.’

Mrs Ruseva became suicidal when told Maria would never return to Nikolaevo."

Maria is Roma and it seems whe was well looked after and loved by the Roma family in Greece. I hope that Maria can stay with a Roma family.

Wuldric · 26/10/2013 13:24

Pure and blatant racism if you ask me. Appalling stuff.

I would have agreed with you claig until I read that the greek father said he didn't want his wife to take maria

"Hristos Salis (right) told the court he did not want Maria (centre) in the house as he tried to blame his wife, Eleftheria Dimopoulou (left), for taking the child "

claig · 26/10/2013 13:29

But, YoureBeing, he may just be saying that because he thinks he may be in trouble with the law.

claig · 26/10/2013 13:31

I don't believe him.

YoureBeingAnAnyFuckerFan · 26/10/2013 13:37

yes good point. it's very hard to know what is true in this story. people are scared of implicating themselves further so say what they think is the safest thing.

lljkk · 26/10/2013 15:49

I wonder if many Eastern Europeans are reading about this without a tinge of surprise. :( :( Out of prejudice or real life observation of how many of the Roma live, or both.

Clawdy · 26/10/2013 16:24

That little girl with Maria's birth mother - surely that bright orange hair is not her natural colour?

cory · 26/10/2013 18:50

No doubt it is henna, Clawdy. Which is used in many communities for perfectly innocent cultural reasons.

lljkk · 26/10/2013 19:30

ahhhh… henna. I meant was the orange natural colour, not the blondes! There's a picture of an older brother, too, if you google enough, who has beautiful blonde freckles. (he looks really upset about the whole situation).

Is the henna to fend off evil spirits? Can't imagine why you'd henna small child otherwise.

BerstieSpotts · 26/10/2013 20:57

Maybe for fun? Like we would put face paint on a child?

BinarySolo · 26/10/2013 21:40

Maybe Maria's two tone hair is down to henna too?

Mimishimi · 26/10/2013 21:42

Those kids aren't Albino though. Can an Albino gene make your other kids fair as well? I'd be surprised if that was the case. I thought it might be some recessive gene from a non-Roma ancestor expressing itself. I wonder why they dyed their kids hair red. Wouldn't that make them stand out even more?

claig · 26/10/2013 22:18

'Those kids aren't Albino though.'

Yes, I think you are right.

'I thought it might be some recessive gene from a non-Roma ancestor expressing itself.'

Yes, that is a good point.

Clawdy · 26/10/2013 23:17

It looked as if "fun" was the last thing on that mother's mind.

BinarySolo · 26/10/2013 23:22

Do people so poor that they need to give their kids away really dye their children's hair for fun?

FrankH · 27/10/2013 00:00

Contrary to popular belief, neither blond hair nor blue eyes are confined to people of "white" race. There are even individual people who are basically "black" African, but who are fair-skinned with blond hair and blue eyes. I saw one myself just yesterday in my local supermarket.

Blond hair and blue eyes are due to genes which result in the lessening of production of melanin. Mutations causing this dilution have certainly occurred many times, and in many places, in the history of humanity, and will continue to do so. Incidentally, "albinism" is merely the most extreme form of these melanin diluting genes - it isn't a separate phenomenon.

Because these "dilute" genes are usually recessive, there will be many cases where parents have children who are lighter in colouration than they are.

In all the three most publicised cases of blond children being removed from Roma families - one in Greece, two in Ireland - DNA tests have shown that the children are indeed Roma, and in two cases seem to have been the children of the parents from which they were confiscated.

Roma already have a pretty bad reputation in Europe as it is. The recent events - and the publicity given by the "popular" press - will only add to this.

Mimishimi · 27/10/2013 06:03

I've seen people with blue or green eyes many times in India. More with white or nearly white skin. Blonde hair never but I've definitely seen light golden brown hair, especially on children. Can't think of a time I've seen all these combined though ie fair hair, light skin and blue/green eyes.

Lots with these features in Afghanistan though. One theory is they are the descendants of Alexander the Great's army which disintegrated there...
