Surrounded by 30 members her family, Mary-Ann's uncle, Charlie Harris told reporters: "I am just glad that justice has been done at the end of the day.

Twiglett · 29/04/2006 21:58

you cannot win with a life for a life

all you get is an escalation of violence and lack of respect

Caligula · 29/04/2006 21:58

Yes I noticed he didn't call for the death penalty, starlover

UCM · 29/04/2006 21:58

No I am not, but if I was, I would be up for murder already.

HappyMumof2 · 29/04/2006 21:58

and her family are on good terms with the father of one of the murderers.

Socci · 29/04/2006 21:58

quite Twiglett

ScummyMummy · 29/04/2006 21:59

It says in the bbc piece that the judge commended the family for their dignity. They are not baying for blood, ucm. Why are you?

starlover · 29/04/2006 22:00

i have to say.. it's the longest sentences I've seen given out for a long time! i'm quite impressed

UCM · 29/04/2006 22:01

You haven't met her mother, are these the sort of things you would say to her. Come on for Gods Sake, in a few years on mumsnet, there are women on here with girls who will be 16, what would you say to them if their children are abducted & murdered. What would you say to me if it was my Son...... Eh..... Oh sorry UCM but the death penalty is not something I would support......

UCM · 29/04/2006 22:02

Think about your own children and tell me that you are happy with this....

Look, folks, you feel sadness and shock and you didn't even know the girl.

These fellas did, and they haven't expressed an iota of remorse for having tortured, raped and brutally murdered her.

And they are adults.

Why give them the chance to 'reform'? That's an opportunity at a life Mary Ann will never have b/c they killed her.

Lock them up FOREVER. Bring in life w/o the possibility of parole sentences and make inmates WORK to earn their crust or at least contribute to their living expenses if they are physically and mentally capable of doing so, or put them in solitary confinement.

Nothing inhumane about keeping people who have shown they cannot live in society - b/c they rape, murder, abuse the vulnerable, etc. - away from the rest of us for good.

ScummyMummy · 29/04/2006 22:03

But it doesn't sound like the family do want the death penalty if they think justice has been done?

HappyMumof2 · 29/04/2006 22:03

don't agree with dealth penalty UCM. No matter how many times you ask I doubt you are going to get many people who agree with you on this.

expatinscotland · 29/04/2006 22:04

That's pretty sad that you can get such a short sentence for such an unimaginably horrific crime.

So they get out in 27 years, let's just say.

They'll still be around 50 years old.

And Mary Anne will still be dead.

Socci · 29/04/2006 22:05

UCM can't you see that torturing and murdering them would do nothing other than make you or whoever does it as bad.

UCM · 29/04/2006 22:05

It doesn't matter.... I am asking you 'what would you say to me if it was my child'.......??????? I know it's not, but it could be, these days anything can happend to our kids, so imagine it's me, and tell me what you you would say???????

2shoes · 29/04/2006 22:06

have to say I hope they have a terrible time in prison as they are child murderers

starlover · 29/04/2006 22:06

yezx UCM I would be happy with it... nothing would bring back my ds if he was killed... and I wouldn't want his murderers having an easy route out and not have to pay fully for what they did.
I wouldn't want them to not live for the rest of their lives knowing what they did to an innocent person.

spacedonkey · 29/04/2006 22:06

I'm with all those against the death penalty. Two wrongs do not make a right.

starlover · 29/04/2006 22:06

and yes... it makes you as bad as them...

ScummyMummy · 29/04/2006 22:07

I don't know what I'd say ucm. It's a hypothetical that I can't imagine.

Greensleeves · 29/04/2006 22:08

agree with expat - throw away the key. I would also make them do productive, strenuous work while in prison. I would suggest some sort of voucher system whereby prisoners earned their food and privileges by working. No work - no eat. No telly. No playing table tennis. No smoking. And no parole for people like this.

But state-sanctioned execution is the most cold-blooded and unacceptable form of ritual killing IMO. I don't want to bring up my children in a society which condones judicial murder. And the justice system has yet to exist which can be trusted to get it right even 95% of the time.

UCM · 29/04/2006 22:08

So if Mary Anne's mum came on here and said that she wanted those men to die, you would say that to her?

OP posts:
starlover · 29/04/2006 22:09

you're imposing YOUR beliefs onto someone else.

this isn't about her or her family... this is about you.

no need to get so het up just because we don't agree with you
