There is talk of bandits that apparently target tourists in France - especially cars with british plates. More usually South of France apparently.

So so sad. Those poor children. I hope the 7/8yo pulls through.

SoggySummer · 06/09/2012 14:13

My DD is due to go on a school trip near where this took place next week.

TunaPastaBake · 06/09/2012 14:16

Bandits ! - Bloody hell we camped down near Lake Annecy last year !

VivaLeBeaver · 06/09/2012 14:20

I've certainly read stuff in the past about British motorhomes been targeted in France overnight by people with ether, using it to knock the inhabitants out and then taking any valuables.

squoosh · 06/09/2012 14:26

It says they were killed by shots to the head. That sounds like someone well practised in shooting.

Thumbwitch · 06/09/2012 14:28

It does, yes Squoosh. :(
Sounds very disturbing.

TunaPastaBake · 06/09/2012 14:34

Media have already swooped on family home Sad

titchy · 06/09/2012 14:46

Bloody hell they're from less than a mile away from me! Poor kids Sad

Thumbwitch · 06/09/2012 14:49

Ah fuck, what are they doing at the family home? That's awful. :(

kellykettle · 06/09/2012 15:23

It's such an upsetting thing to happen. Those poor children.

I cannot understand what the press are getting from the aerial filming of the family's house.

TunaPastaBake · 06/09/2012 15:35

titchy - you must be near me then

EdithWeston · 06/09/2012 15:39

One channel was filming the family house from a helicopter that even before the press conference (that's why I was a bit tetchy earlier about organisations which pre-empt the announcements).

The post mortem results will be known tomorrow. The French official who spoke to the press would not be led into speculation at all, so there is little idea of what theories they may be investigating.

The French cyclist was a married father of three, who had just gone out for a bike ride.

The two girls are in hospital in France. The younger is physical fine. The elder is in a stable but serious condition in a medically induced coma.

kellykettle · 06/09/2012 15:42

I heard that the cyclist who was killed had overtaken the cyclist who found them.

I bet he's having a huge what-if moment today.

titchy · 06/09/2012 15:45

Tuna - I'm just the other side of the A3.

Bossybritches22 · 06/09/2012 16:03

3 of the adults in the car were shot in the head, the 8 year old hit 3 times (?as she ran away?)

Sounds very cold & premeditated, like an assassination type thing?

Or a local nutter with a racist motive?

They live in Britain but are not British.

Those poor poor girls, what have they witnessed??Sad

TotemPole · 06/09/2012 16:12

In the article I read, they mentioned they'd found passports for 3 different nationalities, British, Iraqi and Swedish.

It all sounds odd to me. Too messy for a professional hit, but over the top for robbery gone wrong.

Sidge · 06/09/2012 16:13

This is such a sad and tragic story. I'm shocked by the savagery of it and the idea of a 4 year old hiding under the bodies of her family, maybe too hurt and too scared to come out.

And the poor man that was cycling past and found them; I imagine it will haunt him forever Sad

worldgonecrazy · 06/09/2012 16:20

Sadly it does sound like a professional hit job gone wrong. There are so many easy pickings with tourists it would seem a bit extreme to go to this length and then not take anything.

Very, very sad. My heart goes out to the girls involved, I hope that they get the support they need.

I'm sickened that the gutter press have already started doing what they do best (or should that be worst). How long before people are offered money to tell stories about the family.

Thumbwitch · 06/09/2012 16:23

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9525866/France-shooting-Timeline.html latest update here - the wife wasn't shot in the head, the driver, the cyclist and the older woman were. Bizarrely, the car was locked and with the engine running still - why? I hope that when the 7yo recovers she may be able to tell them something but it would be cruel to make her relive that appalling experience. :(

phantomnamechanger · 06/09/2012 16:24

this story has affected my mood all day. so barbaric, and so so sad for that little 4yo. I hope her sister pulls through and that they have other family who will look after them.

how scared she must have been, and wondering when someone would come and help her, or fearing the killer would come back.

poor little mite

Marne · 06/09/2012 17:13

So sad, they just said on the news that so far no one from the family are flying over to be with the little girl, poor mite, she must be so scared Sad.

VivaLeBeaver · 06/09/2012 17:23

I hope those girls have some other close family, like another set of grandparents or an aunt/uncle.

Bossybritches22 · 06/09/2012 18:09

Indeed viva hope someone comes forward or they'll go into the French care system or sent home to ours I presume?? Sad

blisterpack · 06/09/2012 18:14

I think it's a bit premature to think that the girls are going to be going into care Hmm.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 06/09/2012 18:17

Havn'et stopped thinking about this all day. They're the same age as my DCs and it's so heartbreaking, thinking of that little girl hiding under her mother for hours Sad
