Here is a question.

Muslims says that the prophet cannot be protrayed and that for anyone to do so is a basphamy. But how can you blaspheme something you don't belive in?

As I understand it orthodox Jews say that it is a blasphamy for someone to write out the word of god. They would write G*d. Does this mean that Jews have the right to demand that Muslims stop writing the word Allah (since Muslims worship the same god as Christians and Jews)

And my boys would be bereft if the Fantastic 4 comic book writers were made to get proper jobs.

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:44

poppodum, say death to the manufacturers, if you want to, but the police may wnt to charge you, and be ready to issue an apology.

Caligula · 06/02/2006 20:44

Well I don't want my beliefs belittled and insulted either.

So there we have it. Impasse

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:45

Everyone does realise, that I was joking about the cartoonists, don't they?

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:46

Well Calligula, that is good, youshouldn't allow people to insult something that is dear to you

Caligula · 06/02/2006 20:47

No singed, I should allow it. I should argue vociferously against it and try and make them see the error of their ways, but I certainly shouldn't say they're not allowed to challenge me or insult my beliefs.

I've said all this before, on the other threads. Round and round... ooh, is that Corrie? See you later.

Blandmum · 06/02/2006 20:47

Seriously tho, the Welshism thing was a jokette, but a serious point too.

How can we expect people to follow the precepts of others religions. It is unrealistic for Muslims to dictate what all the rest of the word can do (and any minute mp is going to jump up and say....well that is what America wants to do....dofferent argument m'dear)

For a Muslim to draw the prophet is the ultimate no-no. I can see that. But it isn't for me, because for me he was a man who lived in the middle east a long time ago. Hindhus don't eat beef, Muslims and Jews post. For me, lamb is off the menu 'cos of Welshism . Great for all of us. But I can't impose that on any of you , or you on me.

Do you know what? I am a practising catholic and once had an argument with someone on MN about how I thought the world would NOT be a better place without religion. But after reading the other thread and this one, I'm now wondering if I should join the ranks of atheists!

Please correct me if I am wrong all you Muslims, Christians, Hindis, whatever, but I thought that the whole point of religion was about love, peace, harmony, respect, etc. Is that not so? It's just that I can't see any of that on MN today.

Instead I see bickering, sarcastic little comments thrown in here and there, personal insults, in fact it's got far more personal than any other thread I've come across on MN and I've been here for 4.5 years now.

How dignified it would have been to walk away from all of this. If you are truly offended by a bunch of cartoons, then you turn the other cheek, you prove that your religion is greater than theirs by showing what they lack, dignity, grace and respect for others. But by reacting in this knee-jerk way all you will get is condemnation, intolerance and disrespect.

This has been a bloody awful afternoon for just about sinking the lowest you could ever sink on a debate. I've sat at the keyboard speechless with incredularity. Hope you all think that you've made your points well, hope you go to bed satisfied that you have made the world a better place!

What have we learnt about humanity I wonder? That it really sucks ass and I'm just about to join the ranks of atheists. Well done!

poppadum · 06/02/2006 21:29

That's Hindu, Rhubarb, not Hindi.

I disagree with you. Personally, I have enjoyed the debate and learnt a great deal. I do think I have made my point well, but more importantly, I think: This is a great country simply because I can discuss this issue and not be thrown in prison for it. To me, discussion makes the world a better place, even if it sinks to name-calling sometimes.

Rhubarb · 06/02/2006 21:34

Sorry to have spelt it wrong. If you read the other thread I cannot find traces of a debate, all I can find is bigotry, insults and hatred. I am ashamed to be associated with any kind of religion that sends out those messages.

I have always taken other peoples opinions on board, I have always listened to other views and I like to think that I am fairly open-minded about most things, that I am willing to have my mind changed if points are proven. But some of the religious posters seem to prove that religion is just full of brain-washing, where you cannot actually have an honest opinion for fear of being set upon.

It has left a very nasty taste in my mouth.

poppadum · 06/02/2006 21:40

I know what you mean, Rhubarb. But on the plus side, we do have a new religion of the blessed Sheep!

Caligula · 06/02/2006 21:43

Here's something to get really depressed about.

contest for holocaust cartoons by Iranian newspaper

morningpaper · 06/02/2006 21:44

Also the post which just said:

"pork! Bugger!" from MartianBishop made me laugh for SO many reasons

Rhubarb · 06/02/2006 21:45

I officially denounce all religion including my own and hereby become an atheist. I only hope others will join me.

Stupid bastard humans!

trying2bgood · 06/02/2006 21:48

oh rhubarb! you should join our planet is doomed thread!!!!!!!

Rhubarb · 06/02/2006 21:49

No thanks, I might end up slitting my wrists in despair!

Angeliz · 06/02/2006 21:50

TBH, i stopped reading the thread when someone compared the horror muslims feel at that cartoon to the horror we feel at the 12 week baby rape case.
That has nothing to do with me being a different religion, it just made me sick!

morningpaper · 06/02/2006 21:51

That was ME! I may have got a big George Galloway at that point

Rhubarb · 06/02/2006 21:53

It's frightening when people get so involved in their religion that it means more to them than their own lives or the lives of others. They become obsessed, engulfed by it. They cannot argue logically at all. I just read 'An Evil Cradling' by Brian Keenan and in there he talks about the minds of his kidnappers, how they are mentally 12 years old because religion has taken over every aspect of their lives so that they can no longer think for themselves, they consult the Koran for everything. It makes for disturbing reading.

morningpaper · 06/02/2006 21:54

But Rhubarb do many people not do the same thing for the cause of 'their country'? How is it different?
