Here is a question.

Muslims says that the prophet cannot be protrayed and that for anyone to do so is a basphamy. But how can you blaspheme something you don't belive in?

As I understand it orthodox Jews say that it is a blasphamy for someone to write out the word of god. They would write G*d. Does this mean that Jews have the right to demand that Muslims stop writing the word Allah (since Muslims worship the same god as Christians and Jews)

I wish Mumsnet would reconsider too. They really should bring back her posts or they should delete the thread. I'd hate to think that someone would read this a few months from now and think that she was being racist.

apparently the cartoons were published in an Egyptian newspaper in October - so where is the backlash against Egypt?

Why is the hatred directed solely to Denmark?

Hiya JT,
Personally I wonder if the backlash has more to do with existing tensions than it does the cartoons themselves. I sort of think that perhaps the cartoons acted as a catalyst for a reaction that was already brewing. And that same hatred does not exist in the muslim world for Egypt, so they can be forgiven for printing the cartoons... I'm somewhat guessing here. But surely the scale of the reaction must have something to do with the tensions that were there before it was printed.

but only towards the West

so you're saying this not about religion at all?

I am sure that the general climate in Denmark was a factor. The governmental party were well known for both an anti-immigrant stance, and particularly, an anti-muslim stance. Several politicians had made very unpleasant comments in public (before the publication of the cartoon)

Thank you, Sweden!

Additional Reporting By Radwa Hassan, IOL Stuff

STOCKHOLM, February 10, 2006 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) ? The Swedish government has acted swiftly to prevent what could have been another "cartoon war" when it canceled a contest planned by a Swedish right-wing party on cartoons of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

"Swedish Foreign Minister Laila Freivalds decided to halt the Web site of the small nationalist party Sweden Democrats, which planned the Prophet cartoons contest," Abdul Razik Wabri, official of the Islamic League of Sweden, told IOL Friday, February 10.

The move was taken after talks Thursday, February 9, between the Swedish top diplomat and the political parties in the Scandinavian country, he added.

The Web site launched a competition for Prophet Muhammad cartoons on January 10.

a very wise move - I think we'll all agree on that - the Swedish public will be delighted!
