Here is a question.

Muslims says that the prophet cannot be protrayed and that for anyone to do so is a basphamy. But how can you blaspheme something you don't belive in?

As I understand it orthodox Jews say that it is a blasphamy for someone to write out the word of god. They would write G*d. Does this mean that Jews have the right to demand that Muslims stop writing the word Allah (since Muslims worship the same god as Christians and Jews)

when did I ever insult you?

And for me the prophet isn't the prophet. You think he is, I don;t. Well there you go. You can't demand that I follow the teachings of your religion.

Out of taste I wouldn't insult you, but you cannot demand that I follow your religions teachings on pictures of the prophet. Not in the UK you can't, anyway

Burning offices is what extremists do, not what normal Muslims do. No one is arguing that is an inappropriate response. But the point is, does a free press have a right to publish anti-semitic cartoons?

ScummyMummy · 06/02/2006 20:35

I think the Danish embassy in Beiruit was burned down?

Blandmum · 06/02/2006 20:36

and the Austrain one was attacked in Iran I thin. and a US base in Afghanistan

This isn't about the cartoons. It is attack the west time

That's right because there are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world and they are ALL out to attack the West. Better lock your front door, mate.

Blandmum · 06/02/2006 20:37

MP, what you couldn't do is publish an ati semitic cartoon that, say exhorted people to go out and kill the jews. That would be an incitement to racial violence.

Fine, Mb, you believe in what yuo believe in, I have my own beliefs. I never said that yuo can't have your own beliefs

Aghanistan is at war.....didn't you know?

Blandmum · 06/02/2006 20:38

Oh ffs, did I say all the muslims? Read the posts I have made over and over and don't be silly!

If I had a fiver for every time I sai don't all muslims etc etc. I would have to go to work tomorrow.

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:40

No, newspapers should not publish cartoons that are insulting to anyone, at all.

Caligula · 06/02/2006 20:40

mp my view would be that it would have no right to publish anti-semitic cartoons that incite its readers to attack or harm Jews.

But you would have to define anti-semitic. For many, any criticism of the state of Israel is automatically considered anti-semitic. I happen to disagree.

poppadum · 06/02/2006 20:40

martianbishop,

can i join your religion? It seems so much fun! all hail the blessed sheep!

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:40

Who are yuo talking to martian bishop?

ScummyMummy · 06/02/2006 20:41

I think a cartoon of Moses or Abraham or other Jewish icon would be ok.

Caligula · 06/02/2006 20:41

Um, singednotburned, in that case you've put every cartoonist in Docklands on the dole. Political cartoons are nearly all about insulting people.

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:41

But I eat sheep! So if yu have some spare, can I eat them, please, you can eat all my pigs if you want!

Blandmum · 06/02/2006 20:42

SNB, but by insisting thet noneone can protray the prophent you are, in effect, insisting that we all adhere to a prohibition that hold for those who belive, ie the muslims. What else can this mean?

While I would agree that the cartoons were tactless, and personaly I would not have drawn them you have no right to insista that I never draw te prophet. to me his isn't the leader of my faith.

What next? Because some muslims want to wear hejab, I have to as well? that would be silly. I can't expect you to renounce your faith, you can't demand I follow the teachings of yours

singednotburned · 06/02/2006 20:42

well cartoonists shuold get real jobs.

poppadum · 06/02/2006 20:42

who defines insulting, snb? you, me, or the sheep? a very slippery slope.

I see images of my Hindu deities on tshirts every other day. Do I get to say "death to the manufacturers!"

Caligula · 06/02/2006 20:43

I like Steve Bell. It would be awful if he got a real job.

Blandmum · 06/02/2006 20:43

no, there is a difference between saying I don't want my beliefs and religion insulted and my prophet humiliated, and saying you have to believe as I believe.
I don't see your point.

poppadum · 06/02/2006 20:43

oh, so no cartoons under Singed's new regime.

what next, no films either? Life here is going to be so much fun.
