It seems sanity has prevailed. Let's hope there are no more delays and the site is cleared ASAP

Its about compromise and respect though isnt it. Other ethnic groups at least try to integrate. And if they cant, they keep to themselves. They dont break laws, intimidate people and have no respect for what they are given. The Roma family who visited our village for years, were quiet, respectful and were welcomed and accepted into the community.
As I mentioned upthread, Travellers also lived in my town. There have been two past sites which have been closed, because they were virtually uninhabitable. Another site is pending. Some travellers jumped the gun and moved in before the site was developed. They caused definite, visible trouble, and indirect difficulties.
As a minority, you need to earn respect. Not expect it.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 19/10/2011 23:30

Nice

That just proves my point really, unfortunately probably unlike you i cant buy a new laptop where the buttons work properly.

Sometimes they click and sometimes they dont you see. I will make sure i preview all my posts though just for you.

Please let me know what standard of education i have to post on here. I am obviously lacking your wit, intellect and class.

moondog · 19/10/2011 23:31

You carry on.I'm enjoying the show.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 19/10/2011 23:32

all i can do haggy is comment on the ones in my town who have been here for years. Maybe it is because they have a legal site and have settled down.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 19/10/2011 23:34

What, whilst popping onto other threads taking the piss out of peoples grammar and lack of education.

moondog · 19/10/2011 23:41

If only that was the issue.
Those factors (raised by you and not me. Unsure why.) are the least of your problems.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 19/10/2011 23:43

whats my problems then moondog? spit it out

moondog · 20/10/2011 00:00

The points you raise about your friends and housing issues are valid ones as is your point about 'racism' being hard to defnie.

What I find hard to accept is your deification of 'travellers'.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 20/10/2011 00:18

I dont think that moodndog but i think the kids are hard done by. Its just raising another generation of the same. They wont be able to go to school and theres no way their parents are going into houses. Imagine being a kid and knowing your not wanted anywhere. Its shite.

mathanxiety · 20/10/2011 06:33

'As a minority, you need to earn respect. Not expect it.'

It seems to me that the British were often a very distinct minority yet iirc from history classes and general reading they expected a good deal of respect wherever they went. But that is an aside.

Middle class apoplexy is not going to advance matters here. It would have worked in Ireland if it was that simple.

moondog · 20/10/2011 08:02

Fifi as someone else said, I'd love to just throw down a house wherever I'd like and have the local school accommodate my children and my wishes to come and go as I please.

They won't as it isn't beneficisal for society as a whole.
I have to accept that my 'lifestyle choices' have to tally with the majority.

Otherwise I should clear off.

Most of the peopel there are professional troublemakers anyway, seeking attention and a quick adrenaline rush.

Their concept of definition and repression is pathetic.

Blueberties · 20/10/2011 08:06

Just like to point out I'm not apopleptic. Smile

Haggyoldclothbatspus · 20/10/2011 08:44

"It seems to me that the British were often a very distinct minority yet iirc from history classes and general reading they expected a good deal of respect wherever they went. But that is an aside"
As a history lesson, that is very true. Even now, it still goes on. Look at expat communities in places like Spain. Its despicable. My personal opinion is entirely different though. If you are a minority, possibly in a country that is not your place of origin, you should try particularly hard to integrate yourself into the local community. If you cant do that, you need to make the best of things, keep quiet and not cause ructions.
Yes, travellers do keep to themselves, but they make demands, and expect them to be met, and are particularly good at causing ructions!

Haggyoldclothbatspus · 20/10/2011 08:48

And Im not apoplectic either!

Haggyoldclothbatspus · 20/10/2011 08:59

Or middle class, come to that! Smile

Muslims are treat very well where i am, obviously i know not so well in other parts. I dont think it is confined to the roma and irish but i do think people are racist towards them without even knowing they are being. Dont say anything about a muslim and dont discuss immigration as it's racist. But its fine to tell the tavellers to go home where they belong if they dont like it. Muslims have been accomodated in this country. They have their own communities and place of worship. Its a shame its at the expense of others who are living in squalor or homeless as they cant get anywhere near the top of the housing list. I dont think we would be treat so well in their homelands. Maybe if they hadnt of been accomodated they would be doing what the travellers are.

Has anyone thought it may be better for the travellers to be left to build their own community. It would ease the benefits system as well as the huge housing lists.

But er..hang on.
Don't these peopel want to do exactly as they please and yet still tap into the benefits system of this country as well as all our taxes pay for, such as schooling and health?

It doesn't make any difference where you live or who you are-you need to abide by the mores of the dominant cutlure.

My parents live in the middle East. That means no sunbathing and swimming and jolly drinks on the patio. Absolutely fine by them. If people there want to do something Christian, like sing hymns, they do it discreetly in someone's home.

My dh works in Muslim SE Asia. Wouldn't dream of being seen eating or drinknig by Muslim colleagues at Ramdan.

No bleating about 'repression' and lack of respect there.

I can't bear this arrogance and asumption that one's 'rights' override the rights of others.

moondog · 20/10/2011 09:27

You talkoing ot me or about me Glas?
Not with you.

niceguy2 · 20/10/2011 09:29

It's only people like yourself Glasnost who keeps trying to make this into a racial issue. In my opinion this is nothing to do with race. It's all down to the complete lack of respect for the law and certain people thinking they can ignore the bits they don't like.

Ah, Niceguy.
A welcome note of sanity and objective opinion.
Al;ways worth listening to.

Fifis25StottieCakes · 20/10/2011 09:35

Happy, they are not all irish travellers. They are a mix of travellers including English Roma, Roma and Irish travellers.
