Spanking new Flybaby "nursery" thread - learn how to Fly for the month of September only

Countingthegreyhairs · 31/08/2009 13:42

Hello. Does anyone want to join/re-join us for a mutual "kick-up-the-bum" motivational thread starting tomorrow 1st September?

[Then we can join the main Flying threads thereafter if we want to.)

We did the same throughout August

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/good_housekeeping/799866-starting-tomorrow-accelerated-flying-for-month-of-Augu st-only

and it has really helped but being confirmed slatterns extreme cases we feel the need to repeat the exercise throughout September too. We need to declutter, organise, tidy and clean and generally get our lives under control.

All newcomers welcome!

LOL counting There is hope for us all then

elliepac · 16/09/2009 20:08

bonjour all (got fed up of typing hello),

wow lots going on today (unfortunately not in my house)

Lol at walkthedinosaur, and I do mean I actually chuckled into my tea.

Congratulations goldensnitch as optimistic said special measures are definitely in order...

ctgh and darkwood when i say my house is either clean or tidy, i rather suspect i have lower standards than the majority. Clean means i have actually swept up and wiped worksurfaces but most other parts are embarrassingly dirty. Tidy means I can see the floor and this clean and tidy rule never applies to the upstairs of my house because no-one sees it . I am also serious about possibly repeating because i cannot keep up at the moment. I am just picking the ones i think i can do and ignoring the ones that seem like hard work .

having a giraffe i also refuse to get dressed as soon as feet hit floor because i have a very strong urge caffeine in the morning, without which i would never actually get dressed.

Today I have:-
shined sink
cooked dinner and cleared away
done one load of washing
tidied downstairs
no hotspots
made beds
no decluttering
got uniforms ready for morning.

That's it really, ok but no real progress.

Anyway must go and do some v. boring work. Although am on a school trip to flamingoland tomorrow...not bad . Have a nice day tomorrow.

ChairmumMiaow · 16/09/2009 21:42

Hello all, can I play?

I have been following flylady in my own way for a few days - I had already been trying to get myself more organised, something that seems more important with a toddler at my heels - and while I was making lists of cleaning jobs I remembered flylady and decided to give that a try.

I am cheating a bit and have read ahead as I like together an overall view of things before I dive in.

So far I have established a morning and bedtime routine. I'm following most bits and am finding it is really helping.

I haven't read the whole thread here but it seems like you lot are generally liking the shiny sink thing and hating the getting dressed before doing anythin part. I'm the other way here - being dressed helps me to dive straight into the day and let's me get some stuff done while DH is still around to help with DS. However the sink never works for me as DH is in charge of washing up and has his own way of doing things that doesn't always give me opportunity to clear and shine the sink.

Organisation wise I have my routines set u as recurring todos in an app on my phone (which I also use with other apps for menu planning and shopping let's etc) and I can't see myself moving to anything paper based.

DH has certainly noticed how clean the house is as hunks it us amusing as I do tend to get caught up in things and then give up so he's wondering how long he can enjoy this for! I kick started everything with a couple of hours cleaning my hotspots while DS was in nursery which has given me a good start.

snorkie · 16/09/2009 21:49

As I see it a room rescue is putting away/tidying up transient stuff, whereas a declutter is sorting through heaps of junk that are of a more permanent nature.

For example, where I am sitting in the living room I can see a coffee table that is covered in mess (books, papers, cord flexes etc). It's been like it for a while, nothing on there is in everyday use and most of it doesn't really have a home (or I'd have to think quite hard about where to put it) - that is clutter. Meanwhile, I note that ds has left his cello music on the floor as well as his piano music bag and the piano stool is in the middle of the room as is a music stand. Dh has abandoned a coffee cup and dd has left a swim bag all on the floor (probably as the surfaces are pretty much cluttered up). Those items are in everyday use, but all belong somewhere else and are the things you put away in a room rescue - left out toys would also be in this category. Generally you don't have to think, 'do I want to keep this?' or 'where should I put this?' when doing a room rescue, but you do for a declutter.

deepdarkwood · 16/09/2009 21:58

Wow, welcome back, Counting - that's one impressive round up

And, snorkie, I agree - lovely definitions of decluttering vs room rescues

And welcome Chairmum Miaow - you sound well ahead of most of us! I also like the dressed first thing - but then dh gets up with the kids & brings me my cup of tea in bed most mornings so I am fully tooled up before my feet hit the floor...

optimisticmumma · 16/09/2009 22:20

deepdarkwood - lucky you!! I've had to bypass DH on the tea making front and train my DC from a very young age ie as soon as they got their cub home help badge

havingagiraffe · 17/09/2009 08:06

Thanks Snorkie great description of the differences, examples helped loads.

Can't wait until DS old enough to make tea! A few years to go but how brilliant to have them so well trained.

Must get off as laptop on bed and need to make it and hair still wet - in fact not really flying yet

ChairmumMiouw You sound as if you should go to the top of the class - love the name!

optimisticmumma · 17/09/2009 08:28

Morning all!

Well - I am doing OK on everything BUT the decluttering!! Don't know why but I can't seem to get round to it!

Anyway today:
DW unloaded - done
Hotspot - done
Dressed - done
Bedmade - done
DC and DH on train - done(hee, hee my day off!)
To do:
DECLUTTERING
Ironing
Sinks
Coffee with friend
Get DS2 new tie (involves 20mile journey)- he's got an amnesty until Monday
DECLUTTERING
Supper?
Blimey that's enough for now. I need to lie down!

Have a good day everyone

blissa · 17/09/2009 11:49

Morning (just) all

Wasn't around yesterday as I had dd1 off shool with tummy ache. She miraculously got better as the morning went on, and was happy to go off to school this morning. She does like school, but says she misses me But I think yesterday she got to see that my day is not very exciting, between housework and school runs, and it is more fun to be at school!

I have a roundabout bedtime, anytime between half 9 and 11, depending on how tired I am. I could try and narrow it down a bit.

Not achieved much so far today, 1 load of washing on the line, washing up done and kitchen paperwork hotspot put out. I have also been to the farm shop for potatoes, now just need to find something to have with them for dinner!

ChairmumMiaow · 17/09/2009 14:14

I've been out and about today but instead of leaving the house in a rush, convinced I'd forgotten something, I did breakfasts, packed lunches, did my swish and swipe and hung the washing out all before we left at 8.30, which is pretty good for me!

I'm going to attempt to get that sink shiny tonight, because I do see the point of it, I just struggle!

elliepac · 17/09/2009 18:56

Evening all and welcome Chairmummiaow (loving the name).

Today have not flown and am not going to. Have been on a school trip all day and am pooped. Had a fab day at flamingoland but then came home and for some inexplicable reason DH is in a foul mood and behaving like a petulant child and the DC's are also in a pretty grotty mood. Am going to spend what's left of the day away from my grumpy family holed up in the living room watching trashy tv.

deepdarkwood am very jealous of your mornings, sound like bliss and optimistic you seem to be absolutely flying.

optimisticmumma · 17/09/2009 19:11

Elliepac - God I know that feeling!! I am going to add large glass of wine to my Evening routine and suggest you do too!!

I have managed 1 lot of decluttering but now the place looks a mess!At least I got the tie so DS2 won't be getting detention!

Where's everybody???

Thursday's feel a bit weekendy don't they? I hope you haven't been enjoying yourselves too much

I seem to have watched 2 episodes of 'How Clean is Your House'whilst ironing and find myself developing an unhealthy affinity to Kim and Aggie

elliepac · 17/09/2009 19:29

Wine is good

positiveattitudeonly · 17/09/2009 19:38

Hi all,

Have you all seen that Kim (from Kim & Aggie) is doing a webchat next Tuesday? Oh we will all have so much in common with her!! Although, I think the most I will have in common with her is the cartoon character at the beginning of the show has a huge bum - that's me!!

Chairmummiaow - Welcome, and I also love your name!

I've had a good day, but have nosedived a little! I spent the morning being pampered at the hairdressers and love the result, then went and chose 2 new pairs of glasses (2 for the price of 1). Trendy things!!! Off out for a meeting tonight, so just flying by. No washing done today, sink is full up, dishwasher is full, nothing else done, Oh apart from some cat poo found in the back lounge had to be cleared and carpet cleaned. All smelling lovely again now! I wish my cat would learn how to miaow, rather than look dopey at the door and expect me to open it. If I am out, nobody takes any notice, hence the "accident"!!!

I will get up and ready for takeoff again in the morning!! - I hope!!!

elliepac · 17/09/2009 20:16

I don't think I would dare speak to Kim. I suspect there would be lots of over exaggerated face pulling and wagging of fingers if she were to come and visit my house.

(Have just realised that I grinned as I admitted my house is a filthy pigsty, i should be ashamed shouldn't I?)

Dammit, I grinned again.

GoldenSnitch · 17/09/2009 21:22

Even DH noticed the house was tidier today!

I even managed to do my 15 minute declutter and tidied out the understairs cupboard so you can get in there now!

Did get carried away though and DS ended up with a Little Dish for dinner as I ran out of time to make dinner!

Am pooped now though - time for an early night. Would FLYlady approve?

elliepac · 17/09/2009 21:43

Go goldensnitch!

I am sure Flylady would approve and even if she wouldn't, sod it you deserve it .

deepdarkwood · 17/09/2009 22:16

liking the idea of wine in the evening schedule
My 15 mins decluttering turned into an hour, & I leared out a load of old clothes for freecycle, and priced up a lot for our NCT Nearly New Sale ...
AND a lovely lady on freecycle donated ds a footie strip, plus astro boots AND proper footie boots - he is SO excited.
Which is not strictly relevant I know, but it made me feel all happy & full of nice-ness

fruitstick · 17/09/2009 22:18

Have failed in everything today but have spent the day trying to find a house to rent, a house to buy, a job and a childminder so sod the sink shining!

It suddenly occurred to me that Flylady might be altogether more sinister and that after a month or 2 we will get an email that says today's task, 'send me £50,000' or 'kill your husband' and we will all obey slavishly.

Back to decluttering tomorrow!

Well done all.

optimisticmumma · 17/09/2009 22:31

LOL - Fruitstick.
I was thinking more on the lines of 'Move your house slightly to the left'. I do think we have a very healthy British cynacism to all this - I wonder what she would think of all our backchat!

I'm now wondering whenever I go to someone's house for the first time if they are a Flylady! I'm sure I saw someone in that denim tabard thing today

stepaway · 18/09/2009 00:05

am still here, just about.

mornings are going well but i'm still not getting up early enough. the before-school jobs are all getting done. i would like to have a bit more time to get myself ready so i don't look quite so scarecrow-like at the school gate! as it is, i'm still trying to brush my teeth while at the same time trying to hurry everyone along.

i've also been keeping the sink shiny (well, clean, perhaps not shining exactly). it really does have a knock on effect for me. once the sink is empty, it makes me start wiping down the counters.

good luck everybody!

Countingthegreyhairs · 18/09/2009 07:52

Morning all

Here is today's step:

for Friday September 18th

Sorry not to post it last night - still in catch up mode here

Special dispensation for Mumsnetters regarding points 4 and 10 ....

Snorkie - thank you - you have beaten me to it with your spot-on definition of hotspot v underlying decluttering but I have now found my book if anyone has any other questions

Optimistic - I think a bit of a give away is if they cry purple tears ...

Welcome Chairmanmiaouw!

Welcome back Stepaway

Lol at Fruitstick

Well done on those increasingly efficient mornings everyone

Carry on!

Get cleaner to shine sinks...

Oh well.....

mygoodmorning · 18/09/2009 09:32

Morning all,

Sorry not been posting have been ill all this week. Not managed to keep up much at all.

In fact my kitchen is a tip as we speak. Next job to do. Hopefully I can get back into this weekend as I am feeling a bit better today.

Need to get into the habit of pulling my covers right back on the bed when I get up and then actually making my bed when I go back in to do my makeup and hair. I must admit it always looks better in the bedroom when I have made the bed!

Hope everyone has a productive day.
