Spring cleaning for sloths

I need to deep clean my place if anyone wants to join me. The thread will just consist of people saying what they intend to do and letting us know when it's done at a leisurely pace.

But you have a gorgeous clean floor now. :) and the weather has hopefully been wonderful.

The weather is like summer where I am. Yes the floor is sparkling, which makes a change. ☀

Decluttered:
Large bag of clothes to Charity Shop
3x bags (carrier bag size) to fabric recycling

Only now 1.5 loads of washing waiting (one load light colour delicates can wait as there's no room to hang them up! )

Bag of winter clothes/jumpers in attic

Also decluttered an obscene amount of money from my bank into various Oxford Street shops for DD clothes (I bought myself a top from Uniqlo so I didn't have FOMO)

Maitri108 · 04/05/2025 14:34

Amazing progress.

Hi everyone! I just found this thread and, as a fellow sloth, would love to join! I've moved recently so my life house is upside down. I have too many things to do to list them here, but here's a sample:
• Open up the last boxes
• Sort out and organise clothes of all family (2 adults + 2 children)
• Fix the main bathroom (issues with the loo + leaks)
• Organise books
• Organise kitchen and dinning area

Today I've cleaned some mold we had in a bedroom with a very strong cleaner and it seems it has disappeared. We still need to fix the leak in the bathroom that connects to this room and that provoked the mold in the first place (junctures in the bathtub). I know how boring this sounds 😅

Honestly, there's so much to do that I'm feeling very overwhelmed and stressed. If any of you have any tips, I would appreciate them 🙏 I like the idea of this being for sloths, because I feel so overwhelmed any time I read about efficient systems and decluttering methods... 🥴 I am a really unefficient person!

Maitri108 · 04/05/2025 15:14

@WorriedDogFriend Welcome. The sloth way is start small and chip away at it. Congratulations on your move.

My only tip is keep on keeping on. One tiny area at a time if that's all that can be done.

During lockdown I finally tackled how junky my house was. It was a nightmare and I had to keep going and going a bit at a time for two years. It was strange how little difference i could see until the last couple of months.

The start of the operation was so unrewarding and slow but it needed done slowly and properly. I kept it lovely for a couple of years but there's been build up again and I fear we are returning to shitheap levels.

Antonania · 04/05/2025 17:20

@70isaLimitNotaTarget well done, that sounds brilliant progress. @WorriedDogFriend moving is notorious for upping the to do list, but you will get there. @Dogaredabomb thank you for the inspiration.

I've make some sloth progress. Insides of cutlery drawers done. Kitchen windows cleaned. Progress made on the cooker hood - front is fine, top needs another go. Open shelves which I regret installing in kitchen cleaned.

Next job is a rather unloved money plant that needs a good dusting, and a big pile of ironing.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/05/2025 15:53

Defrosted the fridge/freezer and washed the shelves . F?F is ancient and gets ice in the back which does lift out ok if I switch it off and let the air in. Don;t need to use hot water or prod it .
Freezer otoh I need to put an absorbent mat on the floor and leave it open then prod about with a rubber spatula .
It is done now <preen> until it needs done again.

Vacuumed
Sorted through laundry
Risked life and limb sweeping my son's floor
Planted some seeds in one of the garden pots .

Risking life and limb is not the sloth ethos but great work there.

I have been sorting out my utilities in readiness for next month when we may have lower tariffs.

Kettle needs to be decaled.

Ahhh , he's my little boy even though he's 25 yo and 5'11" Grin

Dogaredabomb · 16/05/2025 17:47

Oh! I forgot I'm meant to be cleaning 😂

Um, I'm carefully looking after my seedlings which is for the benefit of the household.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/05/2025 22:23

I bought a new frying pan today , my old one has a curved base -cannot remember if it was like this or it got worse over time - which is bally useless on an induction hob. So todays mission was :
diswasher safe , induction hob safe , non stick , not too big , not too deep .
Got one , so the old one can go , might see how clean I can get it and if it looks good enough it can be sent to Charity Shop . It would be fine on a gas stove , but not mine .

Chuck it 😂 this is where we get stuck.

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 17/05/2025 08:08

@70isaLimitNotaTarget definitely just bin it…

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 17/05/2025 11:49

Yes, it isn't fit for charity shop .
Nor are my Builders Arse jeggings , not even for wearing round the house as I have to keep hoiking them up to save me from indecency

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 17/05/2025 11:59

Oh, yeah, I hate that….

Deathraystare · 17/05/2025 12:56

I admire you all. I was in rented accommodation. I lost it due to not tidying up. I don't understand what was in my mindset, why I did not tidy up. Nothing sentimental... I am homeless at the moment (though still working, thank God, and will endeavour, when I find a new place to keep it clean and tidy. It will be tough but I have to do it!

So I am cheering you all on the side lines!

I'm sorry to hear that. Do you think you might be depressed? Sometimes when you're overwhelmed, you can get paralysed.

A friend of mine was feeling overwhelmed and didn't open any post for six months as she felt paralysed. It happens.

I just did not know where to begin!

@Deathraystare I'm so sorry, that must have been traumatic. I hope you are safe and there are easier times ahead.

The Shelter website has lots of good information on finding places to stay and spareroom.com might be useful.

There's a charity that helps hoarders, if that was the issue.

Maitri108 · 20/05/2025 16:38

Today I sorted out my tool boxes. I actually cleaned them and sorted everything into bags.

I also managed to take off my mop head which was stuck for ages. So I've ordered replacement heads.

I sent off a box of shite from the shed to vintage cash cow!! I also traded an ornament my decorator loves for him doing loads of stuff around the house. Putting up pictures and the bathroom cabinet and tomorrow he's painting my front gate. As a bonus I hated the ornament.
