Action Stations for August! Fledglings Flap Frantically and Swish’n’Swipe through Summer

Welcome one and all!

I’m quickly setting up the August thread (ok seriously I know someone says this every month but HOW is it August already?!) - MN has been a bit iffy today, and I got rather distracted this evening which I fear may be a portent of my hosting skills this month. Thank you to the lovely ED for steering us through July despite much to manage at home 💐

Anyway - do join in as we loosely follow the Flylady system, in order to gradually sort our houses out. The key word here is GRADUALLY. There is no turning the house upside down and banishing chaos overnight, there is slow and steady. You are never behind. Miss a day? Week? Decade? No worries, jump back in, it’ll all come round again.

Newbies always welcome!

I think the biggest thing with working with herbs is to remember that there are 2 doses - culinary and medicinal. Culinary there are little considerations. But if you go to medicinal quantities then you have to be really careful of contraindications with medicines and existing medical conditions.

I have to rework my contraindication sheets in light of the new meds i take. Everything is cross references with toxicity reports etc. It is not just a case of bung herb in strainer and steep.

The difference between a medicine and a poison is only the dosage. And this is true for everything from chocolate to tumeric to foxglove (i dont work with foxglove and really recommend you dont but it is used in some heart med prescribed by the doctors)

HillsBesideTheSea · 16/08/2021 08:19

Dancing i would turn up and sew because kids grow and often it is legs rather than waist especially if ds has habit of filling out before shooting up. Having the wiggle room to let down was always a godsend with my ds

foxessocks · 16/08/2021 08:20

Morning 🙂 sorry I have missed a few pages I think, we had a very busy (but fun) day yesterday, ended up being at the seaside all day which wasn't the original plan but it was lovely.

Not a lot of flying happened yesterday but I did stick some washing on to be done this morning so can hang that up soon.

I'm working today, I'm covering for someone who is on holiday but I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing tbh 🤦‍♀️ nobody told me much!

Anyway, I shall fly by the seat of my pants I guess 🤷‍♀️

Bits of flying in between to stretch my legs.

Nope the foot is ok willow !

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/08/2021 08:35

hills sounds complicated,but very interesting

For accountability purposes I am noting here breakfast has been consumed along with half a Fry's creme bar as flagging and craving chocolate and now I fly,or my realistically stagger, onto the living room.getting tired now...

HillsBesideTheSea · 16/08/2021 08:47

It is. I have plans to dig deep this autumn and winter into the research i have not had time for yet.
Assuming i am top of the house and that nonsense. I need to be. I have until end of October to complete all the decluttering... (yikes that is going to come around fast)

But i also need to do my final year for my qualification so available time might be being optomistic here.

SingToTheSky · 16/08/2021 08:52

Morning all.

I appear to have jinxed myself by saying that I don’t get so many cramps these days. 😣😭

po3.1
❗️Grab meds (and painkillers) and bring breakfast upstairs
❗️Play a game Cagletini asked to play
❗️Deal with BP chart (forgot again last night 🤦🏽‍♀️ oh well 26 out of 28 ain’t bad)

ExtremelyDisorganised · 16/08/2021 08:58

Lots of conventional medicines are based on plant extracts - digoxin for the heart from foxgloves as Hills mentioned, Taxols for cancer treatment from Yew. Aspirin from Willow. I'm not very expert but know a bit from my work.

TheHoneyBadger · 16/08/2021 09:04

Sorry thought someone was just asking how to steep them.

I’m a big fan of damiana and it doesn’t interact with my meds. I’m also found of dried hibiscus flowers but in Egypt they say it lowers blood pressure and mine is already low so I don’t have it often. Weirdly they say karkade which is very steeped and chilled and delicious (they add lots of sugar) has the opposite effect so maybe folklore more than anything. The Bedouin there use marmaria (a wild sage that grows in the Sinai) as a stomach medicine, I just love the smell and find it very soothing but I’m nearly out because I haven’t been able to go home for 2 years now.

I got very into herbs and teas when I gave up alcohol for a couple of years.

Dancingtomusic · 16/08/2021 09:43

Hills- thanks, i will turn and sew.
Zoo- thank you lovely.

Interesting stuff on the herbs everyone.

P.s I forgot to say i found the stuff about friday 13th very interesting esp that is was a female centred...
I stopped believing it as so many significant dates are on friday the 13th. Also, I had a black cat with Green eyes crossing my path every 3mins...so if I didnt cross the path of a black cat...i wouldnt be able to walk in my house. So I stopped beliving in that. Friday 13th is goodluck in this house 😁

Sing- thanks i love croissants! (Munch, munch)
Hope the cramps go soon!

IWillWashTheGreenWillow · 16/08/2021 10:18

Morning all! Am back.

Apologies if I write rubbish, the codeine is addling my brain and affecting my memory a bit. I keep repeating myself to the children what goes around comes around 😁.

I wrote a lovely long post yesterday, then got confused and deleted it because I am a bit of a wally. So, I will try again.

Thank you all for good wishes about my foot. There was no roast dinner or pudding here yesterday, zoo, there were quick Ikea meatballs and a Belgian bun. Sorry "d"p is being a tit again, not that it's news.

Hurrah for a successful party Up.

Lovely French doors Hazel, they look great.

Red excellent news that you have found the rug in the boudoir and passed on some books. Dinner sounds tasty.

foxes hope working-by-the-seat-of-your-pants is ok today.

Dancing thank you, I am wiggling my toes regularly, wearing my very attractive support stocking, doing my physio for knees, ankles and hips. I too have just had to buy trousers that are too long to accommodate DS3. I'd cut some of the legs off when you hem, otherwise he's going to have a cuff round his ankle with the thickness of the material!

Hills your herb work is really interesting. I keep meaning to gather some of ours to dry too.

Sing give yourself some credit, you couldn't have done a third of what you're achieving now pre-meds.

Honey I love the idea of a dedicated bureau in your living room for work.

Mc you're Flying again!

Good luck to Hope and MrsTidy's DC for the start of secondary this week.

🍒👋 to That, ED, Yup and everyone else who's fallen out of my brain. I'm going to have another little nap now!

Lesson cancelled (or possibly moved online, depending what their mum says). Feel like absolute garbage and dodgy tummy etc so not risking it. Think I’m going to cancel piano tomorrow afternoon as well, due to the walk. Argh

Blimey Zoo.

I’ve tidied kitchen (trying to keep it nice)
Cleaned sink and toilet and all of the tiling, dado rail and skirting (why put so many fiddly dust collecting things in a house) around them.

I was feeling quite pleased with myself till I read zoo’s list 🤪

honey when i googled the actions of Karkade (low curiosity threshold and wanted to know more) it is listed as lowering blood pressure but this article has a bit more info I wondered if it was to do with different varieties because i know that European Elder and US elder are different varieties with different toxicity levels. And this needs to be taken into account when using info from online.

I will dig further into this as I have hibiscus flowers in a jar on my self for using in tea.

HillsBesideTheSea · 16/08/2021 18:05

Willow don't forget to wash it before you dry it. I learnt that the hard way last year. Blush

TheHoneyBadger · 16/08/2021 18:13

Hills in Egypt karkade is what the cold drink is called. Bizarre to imagine that it lowers bp when cold but raises it when hot. Hence not sure if that bit is more folklore than science.

Stilllivinginazoo · 16/08/2021 18:32

Didn't get my nap..
"D"p messaged me asking if I could do a dairy, egg and gluten free menu plan for a service user.my feeder brain instantly revved up and powered one out in 20 minutes, but took off the dozy edge so I just lay tossing and turning exhausted.gah!

Went walk dd2.just shorter side of average one, phone says 3.5 km.id have preferred nearer to 5,but hey ho.wind blew out cobwebs and clouds finally lifted it was cool but lovely out!

Stage one of buffing dead skin needs to happen now so heading off for a shower and olive oil and salt to scrub down....
