Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 09:25

Thank you for all the praise 😍 I am glad I got a fair bit done.

Just waiting for DH to get back while doing some work with DS, trying to fit in plenty now as his bestie is here in just under an hour so they can do some English together (must find a blank book!) and then play until we have to leave for chess club. Need to fit in a shower too!

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 09:43

SC if DD complains again about you not having laundry ready for her then she can take over her own washing right? Since it’s soooo easy to keep on top of it :o

Great news about school that is it the same as DS1?

Right, off to make myself vaguely presentable. Ish.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 02/03/2020 09:52

It is! So that makes life easier! His best mate has also got in thankfully.

What actually is a linen press?

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 10:13

✅gave clothes to friend
✅more tattoo designing - so relaxing!
✅asked at reception if they had Cagletini’s bag... they did! And her wellies which I hadn’t even noticed were missing! Phew.

Absolutely shattered now, no doubt due to yesterday, going to try a nap I think!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 02/03/2020 16:15

Sorry I kind of disappeared for a bit Thurs was a busy day, college home for an hour to do school run and shove a shepherds pie in them back to college until 8.30 then a mad dash round Asda so no flying done.

Friday also manic with college then straight on to work which is still manic then got ready at work and went out with the girls so zero flying done.

Saturday I was hungover so also zero flying 🤣🤢🙈

Yesterday we took the DC out for the day but I did manage to squeeze in
✔️ sorting the cupboard under the stairs
✔️ tidy up the living room
✔️ dust and polish hall/stairs and landing including skirting boards and light switches etc
✔️ hoover and mop downstairs

Today all I've achieved was getting myself bathed and dressed this morning. Although I did switch the washer on but it's the same load that's been going round since Thursday so don't think that counts 🙈

Haven't caught up fully on the last thread yet never mind this one but I will when I get a minute so just 👋 to all.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 02/03/2020 18:22

Evening! I thought I'd replied this morning, but apparently not. 🙋 to all and positive thoughts to Bower.

Monday's are my hellishly busy day, although I think I do that to myself because it's the start of the week.

Ta Das
☑️ DW x 2
☑️ LOL x 2
☑️ Bathrooms cleaned and tiles bleached
☑️ DH put new handle and lock on family bathroom
☑️ Home bleugh - full hoover incl. stairs, dust and polish upstairs.
☑️ Hoover, dust, polish and air DS2's pit. Clean his monitor and keyboard before the crumbs asked for self-determination.
☑️ Sat in on DS3's maths lesson - hysterics again
☑️ DH made delicious soup for lunch
☑️ Did science experiment and maths homework with DS3 - much calmer
☑️ Some home financial stuff
☑️ Sent some boring work emails
☑️ Booked MOT for big car
☑️ Booked haircut for DS2

Now sitting in the car while DS2 has said haircut, then home to chivvy people off to Kung Fu / eat tea / collect DS3 from Kung Fu and put him to bed. Bath with my book at that point, I think!

foxessocks · 02/03/2020 18:39

willow same here but I quite like getting off to a busy start and then hopefully ending the week in a more relaxed way! (Doesn't always work !)

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 20:38

Hi all. Currently sitting on the floor in the hallway. Can’t get up Hmm I think the conclusion that this issue is being caused by the meds is pretty much inescapable now, as it’s got worse again since increasing the dose. Will have to beg to try a different brand tomorrow.

ta da
✅wrote up last week’s ACEs session
✅ACEs homework/reading of booklet
✅got Caglets to get their washing from the bathroom, DD put a wash on

Fuck all else. Oops

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 02/03/2020 20:52

Really sorry to hear that, Lane. If you can't move safely, then your Ta Da list is epic. Hope they can try something else tomorrow.

Ta Das
☑️ Everyone fed.
☑️ DS3 taken to and retrieved from Kung Fu.
☑️ Kitchen clear and sink shone.
☑️ DS3 in bed.
☑️ DD at Kung Fu.
☑️ I am now locked in the bathroom, in a big bubbly bath with my phone, my book, a cup of tea and no dog. I do love him, but it's really nice not to have anyone chewing the bathmat!

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 21:01

Oh that was achieved before the collapsing! :o

I have now made it upstairs thanks to DH and a long rest on the top step.

Enjoy the bath and don’t drop your phone :o

Sizeablecontours · 02/03/2020 23:40

Hi all, have been out at a volunteer meeting this evening. Really chuffed as I have been invited to represent our group at a special event.

Yay That great that your ds and his friend got in to their first choice of school!
A linen press is an antique linen cupboard usually made of walnut or a fruit wood
I think (although mine is old pine).

Hope you are ok Lane and that you can get meds sorted soon. Well done for achieving so much but take it steady. Flowers.

Have told DD she can do her own washing (although it's not very economical her doing separate small loads) but she refuses to agree and stick to one or two specific days as requested ATM so I'm just not doing it, and nor is she. And she is not speaking to me either (sigh).

Great list Willow and glad you managed a bubble bath after that lot! Thankfully, our furries aren't keen on the bathroom as they don't like water!

You sound frantically busy We3kings! Hope you can take some time out for yourself at some point! You too Zoo!

Waves to Foxes and everyone else!

I had a slow start to the day and didn't get much Flying done other than washing as was working all day. Hope to do better tomorrow. G'night all!

Cineraria · 03/03/2020 00:58

Sorry to read that you have health concerns Lane and Bowerbird. Hope things improve for you both soon.

Willow, I was quite tickled by the thought that it is nice to have a bath without anyone chewing the mat as if various manners of the household might enjoy a nibble from time to time.

I think I found a handwashing solution. I got out the wider based handwash which is more stable but quite heavy so getting them to move it to the step or floor wasn't very successful as they dropped it. They do seem able to hold it round its neck with one hand and pump soap onto the back of the hand holding ther bottle, so that is what we are doing. All good until I realised that DS1 is using the hand towel after drying his hands to reenact one of his favourite Hey Duggee moments, a polar bear blowing its nose on Duggee's poncho, which rather defeats the object. Envy

I have updated my spreadsheet checklist after a week using it (many more handcream application checks, some extra things like taking laundry from the children's bedrooms at night so I don't have to wait until they are up to start a load and a few copy and paste errors) and started a new sheet for this week. It's going well and I am definitely getting more done although I see that I forgot to brush my teeth this morning! Blush. Not sure it will show up but fingers crossed. Off to do the last few things now as I fell asleep on the sofa while DH was watching a scifi programme with fighting in it. That always sends me to sleep for some reason!

Ta da: (lunch hour)
-frown and inwardly swear at the amount of mess dh and dd made while I was out for just three hours last night Angry
-gather together the usual sweet wrappers, tissues, magazines, papers, cables, shoes, cups, glasses and saucers [sigh]
-throw rubbish in bin and hang up coats
-sort post (trying to keep up with this daily instead of building in to big pile)
-load dw and find out we have no tablets [bad planning on my part grrr]
-throw away all dead flowers and put green bag out for garden rubbish collection
-tidy kitchen
-fill vases with water, washing up liq and vinegar and put on side to soak
-find vases downstairs and put new hyacinths in them
-take all dry washing off drying racks and triage in to named paniers for ironing tomorrow (took three journeys up and down stairs)
-empty wms and hang up one load to dry and put one load in td
-carry a load of ironed washing upstairs and hang up and put away
-find recipes for cauliflower and chickpea curry
-find recipe for butternut squash and chilli soup

  • find recipe for Riverford upside down apple cake
-and gather together ingredients and baking tin for above -prep and roast butternut squash for soup in oven

To do now back from work:
-re-load wms
-dining room table hot spot
-make veggie curry
-make soup
make apple cake
but feeling a bit tired so may not get cake done ... .

My halls (inner and outer) are in a right mess - covered in the usual boxes, dog stuff, boots, etc - but no time to do Zone 1 chores today. Downstairs cloakroom and lav ok though (still guest ready/clean) and just about to do dining room table hot spot before chopping veg.

DD is upstairs but has not come down to say hello Sad.
