Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Habit of the month: here

An explanation about the March habit of the month: Getting Dressed to Shoes here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Good morning everyone!

Baby-step no. 30 for Mon 30th is: here. (I suppose it's quite a quick one as it involves looking at our calendars for next month Grin)

Today is the second of three days in: Zone 5: The Living Room, Den, Family Room (29-31)

Detailed cleaning list for Zone 5 is: here.

And - for beginner's - today's focus is what we call the "home bleugh" but is officially known as the: Weekly Home Blessing ie ten mins on seven essential tasks (except most of us don't find this long enough, especially the bed-making).

Have a productive start to the week everyone!

Some calming influences from nature are in order today I think:

David Hockney February/March landscape: here

And because the weather seems to have gone cold again, his winter landscape of the same view: here

And for the dc, how about getting involved in some nature recording courtesy of The Woodland Trust: here. (If you have a garden or can for a winter walk in a wooded area.)

And finally, for the toddlers and younger dc, this four-season tree craft using loo rolls looks fun, courtesy of Non-Toy Gifts: here!

Take care everyone! Keep calm, and keep washing those door, kitchen cupboard, fridge and kettle handles!

Oops - more thread business - forgot to say ... .

...It will be April 1st on Wednesday ... would anyone like to volunteer to run the thread?

[I feel a bit awful asking when I probably have the most time of everyone, but I promise to volunteer again very soon!]

SC you have done such an amazing job leading the thread through this difficult month, thank you.

I’m not in a position to do April as I think I will be busy and just pop on every so often. I’m quite happy for it to be more of a chat thread like we did in summer holidays (I’m happier times) if that is easier for everybody?

ExpletiveDelighted · 30/03/2020 08:54

Yes, I second that Flowers. Yesterday morning I read back through the first few pages of this thread and realised how much has changed for us all this month, you've done a brilliant job of steering us through SC.

Well yesterday was mainly centred around food and the kitchen. I decided to do one big shop for the week (we have a milkman). We don't have any small shops nearby but are close to several supermarkets so I went to Sainsburys armed with a very long list. Queued for 5 mins to get in, all very orderly. Most inside were maintaining social distancing, one or two weren't. Still no flour or pasta. Got home and decided to wipe down / depackage as much as possible which took about an hour. Then I decided to gut the fridge as it had got very untidy and messy. So another hour or so of emptying, cleaning and sorting fridge contents (lucky it was such a cold day). Then the same for a cupboard.

Also 2xLOL. It was so windy the washing was dry in about half an hour on the line, but a stray gust ripped the whole thing down, we have a twin retractable line and it was smashed off the wall. Amazon quoting 27th Apr for delivery of replacement, can get one pickup at Argos next time I go to Sainsbos but twice the price and wasn't going to go again till next weekend. Hmmm.

Sizeablecontours · 30/03/2020 09:02

Oohhh many apologies Toostressy : I left you and Cineraria off the wave list! (I knew I had left out important names!!) Blush

Gosh I think HCPs get a free pass Toostressy (and KTCluck) Smile

I have an inkling that a bit of structure to the thread might be good in these uncertain times (and having a "thread leader" ensures that someone is scanning the detail of the thread so no-one who is anxious or in difficulties or just wants to vent gets missed, allowing everyone else to post as frequently or infrequently as they like, having said that, I think that everyone on here is unsually good at "responding" to everyone else!!!) but equally - YY - I totally understand most Fledglings are busy keeping their dc occupied so it's up to everyone to say what form they would prefer thread to take.

Sorry not to volunteer to "do a double" but I have a lot of work coming my way in April as dh is still ploughing on and producing shed-loads of admin... but maybe can do May once I am on top of new role... .

Speaking of which, it's a work day for me today, but will BBL!

Cherry waves to all!

x posts Expletive well done for braving the shops! It's my turn tomorrow and I am slightly dreading it! You've reminded me I need to prepare fridge and sort out unpacking/wiping system in advance! Well done re: laundry too (arrgh about line) and noted about thread!

Oh bugger about the washing line 😭

I agree re structure and definitely no thread leading obligations for those in NHS right now! TBF life isn’t that different for me yet 😳 so I’m happy to take April? Fair warning though I wouldn’t be doing quite so many Flying links, maybe more just a weekly reminder of zone etc?

LaneBoy · 30/03/2020 10:18

ta da
✅reminded DD1 to actually open her curtains and window rather than sitting in the dark on her phone 🙄
✅weighed self - less than a pound down this time but still down! 20lb total this year :)

I’m hungry 🙈

LaneBoy · 30/03/2020 10:19

DS has decided to put a note up nearer Easter - reminding the bunny to wash his hands! 🐰

Sizeablecontours · 30/03/2020 12:34

Lunch-break:

Ta da:
a pile of bills to process
and a load of reorganising re: new role which isn't really going ahead yet as previously envisaged, but there is a load of planning around how it will go ahead in future, and urgent admin around delaying it ifyswim. Reasonable interesting for once as I have more autonomy than usual.

Lane thank you HUGELY for volunteering to thread-lead! No worries at all about links/KCC or however you want to play it! Really, really kind of you when you have just recovered Flowers Flowers Flowers

Hope everyone has had a productive morning! See youse all later!

Sorry DDog is in pain Hazel. A friend’s dog has just had surgery on his spine and is doing well.

Life really has changed dramatically Expletive. Feels like this has being going on for ever. Hard to believe that just a month ago things were normal and we all had plans that look very different now.

Well done on the weightloss Lane. I lost all motivation when my Portugal trip was cancelled and have probably gained. Need to get back into it. Thanks for offering to do the new thread.

We haven’t really succeeded at our first day of routine. I got up early, did yoga, showered and dressed but DD has been shattered all morning and didn’t want to get dressed or move from the sofa. Was worried she was coming down with something but she seems to have perked up. Still in pjs though Hmm

Ta da:
✅ breakfast dishes washed, benches wiped
✅ s & s
✅ DH has been to the shop for bread, milk, fruit and veg plus some essentials for PIL. Hopefully won’t need to go back for a good few days.
✅ tidied up (fruitlessly - DD gets something else out as soon as one thing goes away)
✅ bedding in WM

Hoping to get some clothes on DD and get her out for a walk this afternoon.

Also planning to hoover, put some laundry away, bedding back on and clean the utility room.

Hang in there everyone!

TooStressyTooMessy · 30/03/2020 14:09

Hi everyone. Thanks so much for offering to do the thread Lane. Well done on weight loss!

Sorry to hear about your dog Hazel. Must be so hard when all they want to do is run about.

Life has changed completely here. Today has been ok so far though (hope not jinxing myself). Girls watching some telly then I am going to do a drink and snack. Then plough on.

Bowerbird5 · 30/03/2020 16:08

Everyone seems to be getting on quite well.

Ta da
S&S
Made bed
Dusted all bedside, chest of drawers and window ledge.
Cleaned out bedside table. Took a while. Found a postcard I kept that my mum sent me once and wrote about when we lived there. It was lovely to see her writing.

DD not alone 9,000 Brits reported to be in NZ! She said the Airbnb is lovely. Sent some pictures it is small but definitely in DD and DP style.

Had lamb roll yum.only made one for DH he would normally have two but we all need to make sacrifices ha ha🤣
Sorted make up bag while looking for tweezers to pull out those cheeky hairs growing on my chinny chin chin!😳
Cut cats nails discovered doing it while she is sleeping means I get four done before she comes around enough to protest.

Found yoga mat.
Going out for a walk this is Day 14 so I am off out to look at the gardens and daffodils on the way. Have four choices of walks which is great.

Lane That is fantastic. I am going to try losing some now. I lost weight in September / Oct but then started comfort eating and put it back on again. Lost a little bit so going to make an effort.

that dd2 turns 16 April 13th
I'm starting look online for gifts(thinking a camera)
If you have any paper stick together and make a special banner.we put child's name in block letters and fill little drawings favourite things(doesn't need to be perfect obvs) for example dd2 loves pigs so we do pig faces, lil zoo loves giraffes so giraffe pattern /spots full a letter,D's like dinosaurs so attempts draw them and footprints etc..
We go bake muffins, and pop candle in it
Perhaps if a younger one some simple party games(musical statues/chairs etc)
If you can a birthday tea of party or favourite dinner foods?
If younger make a birthday a birthday" crown"
Perhaps older one might like time watch dvd/film and facetime a friend and watch "together"(with snacks)
And an older one might like an i.o.u with something special planned for once this is over?

Feeling but flat today
Have popped Tesco express/co op very early(left 7am) and secure milk incl lil zoo df type, rolls(no loaves) and a bag other bits we can use
Back for breakfast and lil zoo started school work,D's wrote a story as was overwhelmed school offering if work,dd2 such state she just did colouring etc today
Pm me,D's and dd2 watch film on 5 as so bad acting/script good for laughing, critique, guessing entire plot...I sat crocheting my big blankie I started yesterday

Will need contact camhs tom think regarding dd2.not sure how to stabilise and secure my MH ....
