Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Habit of the month: here

An explanation about the March habit of the month: Getting Dressed to Shoes here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Many thanks to Tinselette from whom I have stolen and adapted quite a bit of this introduction! Flowers

And last, but definitely not least, a huge thank you to Expletive for running a really fast-moving February thread so splendidly Flowers Cake Gin Halo

Excellent, Giveme!

Just hopping on quickly with a Ta Da list, before DS3 and DD take over my laptop to do online Kung Fu. As usual, the day started before I was really ready for it and then events rather over took me.

✔ Planning done
✔ Exercise taken (go me!)
✔ Showered, dressed to shoes etc
✔ DW rotated
✔ Bathrooms cleaned
✔ 2 x LOL
✔ DD and DS3 posted into online lessons
✔ Telephone counselling appointment
✔ Lunch and a small nap Blush
✔ science homework with DS3
✔ batch cooking, otherwise known as Multitask With Mum, where I try to cook three things at once with everyone else flinging information and requirements at me in real time. I have made 2 portions of vegetable chili, a 2 portion shepherds pie, a 4 portion moussaka and remembered to defrost DD's boughten macaroni cheese (it's the only way the texture is acceptable). While I did all this cooking. DS2 tried to make himself pasta with spicy tomato sauce and DS1 got up for breakfast at 3.50pm. The kitchen bears scars, but is still mostly there.
✔ Rang my aunt, with whom we will not be celebrating their diamond wedding next weekend. The party has been moved by a whole year and we are hoping for the best.
✔ cooked pasta and sauce for DS3 in advance of Kung Fu at 6.30.

Now I have 20 minutes before DS3 needs the laptop to do something for me, and I still need to hoover while someone distracts WillowHound (or he will try to defend me bravely from the hoover).

Thinking of Bower's Hyacinth of Hope, I am choosing to notice that the forsythia by the living room window is in flower and the cherry blossom as come out.

🌸🌸🌸

Thanks, Lane for volunteering to do next month - I don't think I havve the headspace.

Been out!

This is my 14 th day so I celebrated by going for a walk. Had a chat to farmer’s daughter, who was weeding her flower bed. Had a brief chat to her dad when he stopped the tractor. Saw a near neighbour who was out for a walk. Admired the new born lambs with their proud mums they were near the gate four sheep and seven lambs. Two cyclists going opposite ways gave us a wave. Walked to M6 bridge and saw there was hardly any traffic, got a toot from a wagon driver. On the return we saw a lady on a Fell pony who stopped for a brief chat and then two girls on their ponies. Had a brief chat as we know the elder one 16 who waitresses in the pub.
Saw two more people who we never seen before just waved. Enjoyed a big mug of tea when we got back restrained having a biscuit or cake because we had a bit of Barm Brack before we went.

Ta Da
2LOL
Washed up
Planted some bulbs that should have gone in before but as they are sprouting it is worth a try.

Just watching Jamie talking about his son being a bit of a pain in the bum because he won’t eat bits with pasta. It looks delicious.

Bowerbird5 · 30/03/2020 18:49

If anyone That or zoo or anyone else needs them I have some cardboard letters I could see if there is enough to make happy birthday. Willing to post when we go for bread and milk in a few days. I could use gloves to sort them. You could decorate them they are from school topic headings about six inches tall and could be sellotaped to a string or wool.
Giveme I don’t know who those children are but they have made a wonderful layout.

Defo not my long list bower my list is below!

ta da
✅played piano

Haven’t exercised or anything. Must try later, not sure if it’ll be inside or out! Grey skies here.

Cute picture give!

I’ve been browsing amazon getting tempted by little simple board games I want to buy Cagletini. But really I should use some of our stashed cereal box card and make some activities instead 🤔 thinking various shape/colour/counting type things, maybe jigsaws as she doesn’t actually have any.

Poor DSDs haven’t had much luck on their first week of full independence - fraud attempt on a bank card, can’t get boiler to work, and a complaint from downstairs neighbour about a leak! Argh!

foxessocks · 30/03/2020 19:27

give I love little moments of calm playing with toys in the way they are supposed to be played with! Amazing! My two usually get every toy in the house out and use random things like bits out of board games not for their actual purpose and it drives me nuts sometimes!!

Today we have all argued quite a lot. But the dc have at least gone to bed happy as they are having a sleepover in ds bedroom, it's just been decorated and was nearly finished but haven't got any furniture yet which we obviously now can't get so we thought sod it lets just put their mattresses in there anyway to try it out (ds has been sharing dd room so long now he won't go to sleep alone!)

Ds fell down the stairs earlier and has a big bump on his head. He seems fine though hardly even criedShock

I've written a shopping list for tomorrow... fingers crossed stuff we need is in stock!

Have good evenings everyone, I can hear someone out of bed 🙄

HungryHazelEyes · 30/03/2020 19:51

Thank you everyone for the well wishes for ddog. She's supposed to ready for 1-2 weeks, tomorrow will be a week from seeing the vet, still no better. I'll call them next week regardless so they have an update from me.

THAT in our house whomever has a birthday gets to pick what's for dinner that night (I meal plan so I usually find out what they want the weekend prior). I also bake their favourite cake or dessert. I would decorate the house if I could. I have made pom pom banners in the past using tissue paper and string. They would also have the choice of what we do that night, whether it's watching a movie with popcorn and treats or playing a board game or a nerf gun war.

Lane Don’t know which page I was on perhaps it had gone back to page 1😂
Hazel the pom-poms with tissue and string sounds lovely.

Activity: make pom-poms. Our hospice had a Pom Pom competition. My last year Yr 6’s went mad for it even staying in at break time to make them. They got more and more adventurous and started making patterns and ones with pictures on. They were strung up in the small shopping precinct along with thousands of others and after being admired for a few weeks and some prizes give out they sold them all.
I will see if it is still on the site how much they made.

Giveme I thought they might be😉 cute.

It's the last of the month, so it's a horsey one for the dc! Grin

Today's paintings are by George Stubbs.

The first is: Molly Long Legs.

And the second, the famous Whistlejacket: here courtesy of the National Gallery.

Music (that dc might like!) is Rossini's William Tell overture (said to sound like galloping horses)

A horsey craft for younger dc courtesy of the Vintage Umbrella: see third down.

Finally, a page of horse jokes from the Irish National Stud Grin:
here.

Have a good planning and play day everyone! Keep safe!

Morning all! Suspect my phone is missing out anything in point brackets again.

On here early today before it all closes over my head. I'm very stiff after yesterday's exercise experience 😂 so I'll try something different today!

☑️ DW rotated
☑️ Strong coffee made!

After all that cooking yesterday, DS2 had the entire shepherds pie over dinner and later-meal-after-I'd-gone-to-bed (he's running about 6 hours adrift with me) and DD didn't eat at all. I'm quite worried about her, her anxiety is right back up and the generalised tension is spiking all her sensory processing stuff, so she can't bear food in her mouth. She's beyond even crunchy things, which is usually her go-to soother when tense. All the things I used to use to get calories down DS2 when he was ill (smoothies, scrambled egg etc) are no go for various reasons, unless I can get out and buy branded versions. I saw something stupid on here (MN, not this thread!!) the other day about how "kids with SPD will just have to eat what they're given" and was really (needlessly) cross. This isn't pandering, this is dealing with disability.

Anyway, To Dos
⚠️ Find my laptop - not sure who had it last!
⚠️ Exercise. Ugh.
⚠️ LOL x 2 at least
⚠️ S&S
⚠️ Sweep kitchen floor and get DD to mop it (we pay her extra pocket money to).
⚠️ Sort finances - no point in saving for a holiday anymore, and food costs have gone up at least 50% due to us all eating here, all the time, and having to shop at Tesco (5 mins away) not Lidl (25 mins away).
⚠️ Poke DD and DS3 into online classes
⚠️ Finish writing and ask client what she wants to do about printing - I can't do the big family trees until the print shop reopens.
⚠️ Homework with DS3
⚠️ Dinner - supposed to be fish, but no-one is keen. Very happy for some other family member to do the thinking and prep here! 😂 (Fat chance!).
⚠️ Collapse in heap?

🍒🙋 To Bower, SC, Cineraria, Stressy, ED, foxes, KT, Lane, Hazel, that, zoo, Giveme, Lisette, We3 and anyone I've missed (there's always someone).

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 31/03/2020 08:01

Thanks, SC, Whistlejacket is indeed a fine animal! We are not a horsey family (mind you, 4 years ago I'd have said we weren't a doggy family and look where we are now!), but I can see the movement in that painting. It's lovely.

Stilllivinginazoo · 31/03/2020 08:42

willow totally agree.dd2 not eating much.her go to is bread, but I can't go for a loaf every day to the shops.our local co op has shut as been bought out by miss and being converted ready for opening and bigger supermarkets are so anxiety provoking,I cannot take all zoolets anymore due to numbers in and out and dd2 won't leave my side .D's has no spacial awareness and bangs into everyone so I have to leave him and lil zoo here...
He's losing weight hand over that as j cannot keep up with his calorie requirements either in products will eat, limits on amount can but it trips to the store.
Lil zoo us now refusing eat many things and is quiet and not talking
Is there a breakdown corner, cos I want to move in there??

Tada
Fed everyone but myself as OCD got so stressed I couldn't do it

Fun day ahead

Stilllivinginazoo · 31/03/2020 08:46

*nisa not miss
Hand over fist
Limits on amounts can buy

I can't even English today

To do
Make apple puree with soft apples at back fridge.mash two bananas then bag up same weight in apple puree bags to use in vegan muffins if I can get more flour
Use mashed bananas to make banana, coconut and choc chip muffins(which lil zoo probably won't eat as have coconut in but it needs using up and will add calories D's will eat)

I did a good 3inches on my blankie yesterday as was gone midnight before j went to sleep!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 31/03/2020 09:32

zoo that's really hard. Can anyone locally top you up with bread and bananas? Perhaps the church community? Sorry to hear your OCD is biting you too. Very pleased that the blankie-making is helping though. Sending love and strength ❤️💪🏻💐☕

Stilllivinginazoo · 31/03/2020 10:28

Thanks willow we not esp close anyone tbh,dd1 offered grab anything heavy/can't get locally( as she lives near a big Tesco and drives )tomorrow.so might ask her get bananas,I wouldn't ask for bread as she's asthmatic and currently on steroids as lungs only peak flowing 280,rather 400 normally, and fiancée scarred lungs so they doing minimum shop trips have to and will need bread themselves...

Tada
Kicked self up arse
Made beds
S+s
Load wash on
Give up D's schooling,it's overwhelming him and he's a year behind/can't follow wtf going on so he's now creative writing which will email to outreach teacher..

My rock n roll moment has been discovering bag apples dated Feb in fridge whilst zoolets been eat march ones....
Just peel n chop and now cooking for puree that will sub for egg/binder in muffins.shall probably make some later.i usually use 2bsnanas so will eyeball similar amounts(been saving 2bananas for muffins which D's favourite)and freeze apple puree excess in bags of equivalent so ready to go once defrosted.
Chop few bit bruised stuff up and some peel bits and D's put out to see if his beloved birdies be interested.in interests of science -&or some exciyement-- we have thin slice couple bits, chop couple bits,a chunky bit and some peel to see what's most popular!
Still try free up storage space on phone,so half hour deleting stuff, checked Pinterest would log into computer, then remove app from phone
Frequently check dd2 as freaking/not managing schoolwork and freaking not managing.offered sit with her a bit got me yelled at...need try camhs bit later I think
Sweep kitchen floor

So,to do
Make muffins(total hardship,right?Grin)
Sort photos of recipes I've found on phone that I may have taken in the works rather than buy books for 1 or two recipes liked look of per book
Continue minister girls school work(or in dd2 case lack of)- lil zoo happily working and facetiming friend.theyve done science, most maths..history and pe to go so she be done early today.thinking perhaps crack out some art stuff or if stays dry lob her and D's out in garden for a bit

Hoping everyone's doing ok,I promise the whining will stop now.everyones feeling it and don't need listen me drivelling on!!

LaneBoy · 31/03/2020 10:29

Morning all! I actually slept naturally until after 8am today - not done that for weeks or months!
