Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Habit of the month: here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Glad you got a nap

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 01/03/2020 19:05

Minecraft crap is the worst. Dd has started talking like them doing running commentary of everything in life Hmm

LaneBoy · 01/03/2020 19:28

And they all have THE MOST annoying accents. Whyyyy. And that’s not even Stampy who DS is not into.

I’ve still not done anything much since getting home. I’ll have dinner first and then see.

ta da
✅mini date with DH
✅got DD to wash shirt, practise for French test and check bag for tomorrow

DS has been up in his room trying to make his own RG machine 😍

TooStressyTooMessy · 01/03/2020 20:42

Hello! Thank you again for February thread Expletive StarFlowers.

Thank you for running the March thread SC BrewCakeFlowersWine.

I am a complete failure with minecraft. We have it but I cannot even log on lost of the time. It seems to constantly log us off and then ask for repeated security questions and to rest the password. Complete waste of money so far and frustratingly I think DD1 in particular would love it and would prefer it to telly or YouTube if I could get the bloody thing to work Angry.

Well the weekend with my parents was... surprisingly ok Smile. There were no torturous shopping trips to Smiggle etc which made it much better and I am hoping to reinforce next time that we don’t do it. Dare I even be brave and just say no... wibble Confused?

Anyway, it was stressful at times of course but actually really not that bad. They have definitely toned down their complaining and tutting and DH and I have made a huge effort to try to get along with them. So that is great. I don’t think things are magically perfect by any means but at least it was ok Smile.

DDs asleep so I am planning to have a celebratory glass of wine. Going to make a to do list for tomorrow while I drink it.

Big wing flaps to all.

TooStressyTooMessy · 01/03/2020 20:55

Also I’d like to say a huge thank you for al of your good wishes for getting through the weekend. This thread is the best Smile.

foxessocks · 01/03/2020 21:25

toostressy that's great news that the visit went better than previous ones, well done for managing it all so well !

We've been away this weekend visiting family too, it was pretty exhausting with a long drive there yesterday and back today, got home and put the dc straight to bed, they were over tired and emotional as you can imagine! Me and dh have sat in silence all evening because I think we were also just feeling overwhelmed!

Going to head to bed early definitely, so very tired. Unpacking will have to wait until tomorrow!

Tinselette1940 · 01/03/2020 21:30

Glad it went well Toostressy

I'm going to have a nice bath. Work for today is done.

Sizeablecontours · 01/03/2020 22:04

Evening all! And welcome to the March thread everyone!

Cheers Toostressy Wine so pleased the weekend went better than anticipated!

Wow and treble wow Lane and That your lists today are a-maz-ing! You are both stealing a march on March Grin Grin. And really brilliant that you managed a date and a nap respectively in addition to all of the choring! Star Star

Good work on the oven Hazel and Star for Flying before work!

Lisette deffo thought it was your introduction I had 'lifted' - remember making a mental note at the time and thinking how much clearer your explanation of Flying was than mine - but apologies if it was someone else's!
Star for mega-clean of zone 5.

Waves to Foxes Zoo Expletive Cineraria Shannara Bower We3kings Chic Shannara Honu and everyone else I may have forgotten, especially any recent newcomers!

We returned from the country late this evening so have to go now and do 20 mins of tidying before bed and set wms for tomorrow. A bit deflated (a) because we have some leaks in the main roof which we thought had been fixed, looks like using reclaimed roof tiles was a bad idea (b) because dd's attitude is really getting me down atm. Last week she was rude to me when I was behind with the washing and today was vile when everything was ready for her but she couldn't be bothered to spend 30 seconds looking for it. I can't win. It's very wearing being the parent of a teen sometimes I must admit. [sigh].

Heigh ho! Shoulder to the wind for the week ahead fledglings!
G'night all!

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 01/03/2020 22:06

Glad you survived, Stressy! That's a well-deserved glass of wine. Wine

Foxes, Lisette, enjoy your relaxing end of day things. That, hope you can poke idle twat with big stick ------>

🍒🙋 to everyone else!

Odd today today, as we went to DM's to help her move furniture around in advance of visitors next weekend, then home via a top up Lidl shop and a mooch round the garden centre for DH.

Ta Das
☑️ Many little bits of DIY by DH fixing door latches and locks
☑️ LOL x 4
☑️ Homework completed and submitted
☑️ Kitchen tidied first thing
☑️ DWx2
☑️ Finally got round to sorting out my roots, which appear to be getting ever greyer. I do not approve of this.
☑️ Bathroom cleaned because I dye my hair red and it looked like I'd murdered someone 😂
☑️ Early dinner so DD could watch the Dr Who finale. She has oscillated between hysterical laughter and tears since and it has been quite wearing understatement of the century
☑️ Kitchen tidied again after dinner
☑️ Stock made with chicken carcass so DH can make chicken and mushroom soup (must clearly resign from MN immediately as I have not made one 4lb chicken feed us for 3 months!)
☑️ Dog walk

I'm supposed to be planning next week but, realistically I'm just noodling on MN now!

Sizeablecontours · 01/03/2020 22:18

Argh, so sorry, X post, and managed somehow to leave you off 'wave' list Willow (thought I had replied to you on here, but it was on Feb thread, apologies!)
Like the sound of chicken stock and many little bits of DIY!
And if it's any consolation, my now grey hair only gets done when previous colour reaches the tips, never mind the roots! Not a good look!

Tinselette1940 · 01/03/2020 22:20

You're doing an amazing job all round SC. Glad to hear that there are no more guests for a while.

Sizeablecontours · 01/03/2020 22:47

Thanks Tinselette this is the danger period when, giddy with the relief of surviving a visit I was dreading, I find myself saying things "yes it would be so lovely to see you" on the phone to friends and rellies when they mention future hols/travels. I need to put my big foot in my big mouth, I really do! Grin

Also, when I was reading what Lane said earlier, about putting a load of effort in to one thing and not another (sorry can't quite spot exact para right now) it made me reflect on the fact that we all as a family regularly put a load of effort in to making things lovely and tidy and smooth-running for guests but collectively, for some reason, we CBA to put in as much effort for ourselves, and that needs to change.

Bower hope you are ok? I know it's a very stressful time. The force of the fledglings is with you Flowers

OP posts:
Bowerbird5 · 01/03/2020 23:32

Thank you, yeah I am stressed and it is about to get worse.

Thank you ED for Feb and SC for March.

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 00:17

Final ta da of the day
✅put loads of laundry away (still need hangers though so was just folding everything else)
✅nit checked all three Caglets (and gave DD1 a quick haircut)
✅my clothes ready for tomorrow
✅filled in part of DD1’s chores etc
✅wrote journal including month summary/hopes for March

ta didn't
❌ACEs or Solihull stuff - will prioritise ACEs tomorrow as that’s on Tuesday
❌finish home ed prep, but there’s enough for tomorrow
❌15min declutter living room
❌sort clothes for friend
❌finish future friend - not great, but I am not out early so it’s not urgent

Whaaaaaat a day. I will no doubt regret it tomorrow but I have got plenty done that I needed to, and hopefully I can still get on with stuff as a lot of the remaining tasks I can do seated!

Night all.

LaneBoy · 02/03/2020 00:18

Ta Das for the day:

~ Oven cleaned.

~ DW x2 (one in the morning, the other after dinner tonight)

~ S+S in bathroom.

~ Grocery shopping.

~ Prepared hamburgers for DH to grill them (which he did) and made cauliflower mash for dinner tonight.

~ Went to work at 4pm, left late so didn't get home until 8:40pm. I came home to dinner ready for me which is a huge change!

~ Kitchen cleaned up - everyone pitched in.
~ Washed dishes (hand wash) and wiped down the fronts of all cupboards and countertops.

~ Sat down for a couple minutes with my feet up before getting in the shower.

~ Got my clothes out ready for work tomorrow.

Getting late here now, 11pm. I need to be up and about by 5:20am, that comes by way too quickly. Have a great Monday everyone!

Today is secondary school offer day ..... anyone else waiting for their email?

KTCluck · 02/03/2020 06:41

Bit late to the party, but I’m checking in for March.

I had a lovely weekend catching up with family in York (although a bit too much wine was consumed Blush). Got home around 7pm to a tidy house and a takeaway. DH has done well in my absence!

I have a day off with DD today so planning only minimal flying. I’ll be happy with a LOL and future friending for back to work and nursery tomorrow. May look at today’s mission if DD is playing, but I’m planning on getting out of the house with her. She is still flat out so I’m enjoying the peace.

Thanks for the new thread SC. I’m glad you’ve had a relaxing time in the country although sorry DD is dragging you down a bit. It must be hard not to take teenage angst personally. Like the new name, and yours too That (hope manchild bucked his ideas up and good luck for the job).

Bower Flowers you know where we are if you need to offload.

Lane you achieved so much of your list! Star.

Glad visit went ok Too

Waves to Willow, Hazel, We3, Expletive, Chic, Lisette, Foxes, Zoo, Shannara, Cineraria and any other fledglings I’ve missed.

Tinselette1940 · 02/03/2020 06:48

SC with regards to the intro I meant that my memory is a bit defective not yours!

Morning all. In work all day so not much flying but planning upper hall clean tomorrow including bed linen press.

Sizeablecontours · 02/03/2020 08:07

Ach no worries Tinselette I sort of thought you meant that but my memory is so bad I couldn't trust it Grin Grin

If it helps, I could post a photo of my disordered post-visitor linen press but I think I would prefer to do that after it's annual tidy and clear out which happens every summer [slack house-keeper emoticon] Wink

Morning KTCluck (still love that nn! Grin) Great that you had a lovely weekend away and that Flying is rubbing off on your dh!

And thanks. I wouldn't take dd's rudeness to heart quite so much if dh didn't act as if nothing had happened. He doesn't seem to get it that good cop - bad cop doesn't work any more. I want equal cop, on same team cop!

Great that you had your dinner cooked for you on your return from work too Hazel (even though you had prepped it in advance). Really fab ta da list there too Star!

Foxes I hope you are all feeling less exhausted this morning!

Good luck to your dd2 with her mocks Zoo and good luck re: your ds's secondary school place That! Hope they both receive the outcomes they want!

Forgot to say that my only "ta da" for yesterday was trimming, shampooing and shaping dhorse's tail which took at least three and a half hours. It was necessary because it was getting far too long and knotted. He is a real mud monster atm Grin But he stood for it really well and I managed not to get kicked.

DD has gone off to school this morning where I would estimate at least three quarters of the pupils in her class (mainly second generation French, Belgian, Italian, Spanish, Austrian, and German) have just returned from a week's skiiing. I can only conclude that the authorities have decided it isn't feasible to even try and attempt to contain Corona, as surely yesterday would have been the time to send out a message to lock down schools, not after everyone has come back on aeroplanes from the French, Switzerland, German and Austrian and Italian alps for example?
