Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Ooh that's for the Joe Wicks reminder. School have asked the DC to do it so we will. I won't say no to a little time watching joe wicks get a sweat on either 🤣

Had a lovely day yesterday all things considered. FaceTimed my DGM instead of visiting her ☹️ DH and DC did 99% of the flying. I did some ironing and laundry even though they told me to sit and put my feet up but I was bored. Had a nice bath. Baked a cake with the DC. Made a roast dinner which we won't be getting next week since we can't get to the shops so enjoyed it even more.

We're trying to work our way through the sky recordings as well. Some of them are from August 2018 🙈 so yesterday we watched Johnny English, Lego movie 2 and Mary Poppins returns. Then when the DC went to bed me and DH watched oceans 8.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 23/03/2020 07:47

Sounds like a lovely day, We3!

Right, today is the first day of The New Normal. My broad plan goes
⚠️ Base level flying
⚠️ Online school for DD and DS3
⚠️ Poke DS2 til he does something
⚠️ Coffee
⚠️ Work for me
⚠️ Lunch
⚠️ More base level flying
⚠️ Afternoon stuff for DS3 (mostly homework, some time outside)
⚠️ Tea
⚠️ Online Kung Fu class

Let's see how that goes.

Ooh Thanks for the links to the tidying up games SC. I think my lot will go for some of those. Might give the bullseye, the dice game and the musical statues type one a go.

Lisette1940 · 23/03/2020 08:43

Thanks so much for all this SC. I really like the painting although that poor young one looks bored and as if she's planning to kill her mil (who she's probably living with). Or perhaps her husband. It is a beautiful painting nevertheless.

God the street outside is devoid of people.

I'm totally out of zone four due to quarantine restrictions Grin but I've put a load of laundry on and fed those residing upstairs. I am also separated from the ironing board Grin. i could get used to this.

Working until three. Lunch is leftovers for all. Then I'm baking bread for tomorrow. Planning to spend time learning French today. Ds has access to google classrooms but cant type for long periods on ipad so he'll just do what he can. Husband is being very productive in work - fewer distractions apparently.

Hope you are all well or getting better - I'm thinking of you Lane

Stilllivinginazoo · 23/03/2020 08:59

Morning all.up stupid o'clock
Kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, bathroom and hall stairs and landing done

It's on my own page.x

KTCluck · 23/03/2020 12:55

Morning! Just a quick one as on my lunch break, but Cineraria, DD stayed in her bed all night until I woke her at 6am! She was so proud of herself bless her. Hope you have the same success.

Sounds like a nice day We3

TooStressyTooMessy · 23/03/2020 13:22

Morning all. Finding it impossible to keep up with the thread and totally overwhelmed by the idea of homeschooling. All the kids seem to want to do is eat Hmm.

Will attempt to catch up at a later stage. Hope everyone is getting through this as best they can.

TooStressyTooMessy · 23/03/2020 13:37

Managed to read back. SC, the virtual party was a YouTube thing where a kids’ entertainer did a party display. Thought it might work for friends with a young child who had to cancel the party. It was absolutely terrible Grin. On the plus side that gave us all a good laugh.

Must get on and check the kids. They are watching telly. Homeschooling is going very badly. On the plus side we did Joe Wicks PE.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 23/03/2020 14:09

We did the Joe Wicks stressy my legs are still hurting 🙈.

After that big 2 wrote a story and DS3 did a word matching thing his teacher sent home and wrote a sentence about a toy.

They've played in the garden for a bit and we played a board game before lunch.

DS2&DS3 just did 2 maths worksheets and DS1 did a page of his timetable book.

Now DS1 is making a bookmark with Spanish words on. DS2 is making a poster on why it's good to learn a language and DS3 is playing CBeebies games while he waits for me to make a cuppa sit on mn then we're going to play dobble.

Not much flying done other than a bit of ironing 2 x LOL one of which I've put on the line and S&S.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 23/03/2020 17:31

HELLO!

Been soooo busy here. Most of dcs school work for the day got done. Only did 1 out of 3 activities for dc4 but hes only bloody 3 so i think that will do! Everyone else all done. Also did the Joe Wicks thing (dc1 made me close the blinds so no one could see) Grin

I dont do fb so please dont all bugger off over there

Hope poorly people feeling better

Dc all on devices / watching tv / asleep. Their tea nearly done. They all need baths. I need print their work for tomorrow.

Flying wise .....

2 loads washed
1 dry so far
Living rooms both semi tidy
Living rooms swept
Dc4 bedroom nearly tidy

TooStressyTooMessy · 23/03/2020 17:44

I always close the blinds when doing home workouts That Grin.

foxessocks · 23/03/2020 18:26

I'm still here as well that Smile

Haven't caught up on the thread yet as been very busy today going to sort out the house and get the kids to bed then be back later hopefully!

foxessocks · 23/03/2020 19:11

I'm back! The kids are still awake doing their usual pretending to need a wee every few seconds Hmm

Today wasn't too bad although I'm pretty sure my productivity work wise was way down!! Oh well.

We did the Joe Wicks PE lesson too, it was tough! Ds got a bit bored half way through but dd did it all, they said they don't want to do it tomorrow though! Then they did the 30 day drawing challenge but as usual with my kids they rushed it , they always think the challenge in anything is just to be fastest Hmm

They played shops in the morning and I tried to make it a little bit educational by getting dd to write a price list and ds did a picture version (think it was zoo who suggested that so thank you!)

We had some TV time at lunchtime and then went out in the garden for half an hour. Back inside and dd read stories to ds (this went surprisingly well!) Then they did a scavenger hunt which dd thought we fun but ds just grumbled and complained about it, so if we do it again I'll try and do a smaller simpler one for him.

Then when dh got home they did some worksheets he had brought home with him, they cleaned the inside of the car and played in the garden some more and had a game of charades.

So there's day one...I have a feeling my energy levels will start going down quite quickly Grin at least I only have to do a half day of work work tomorrow!

Lisette1940 · 23/03/2020 21:38

Joe Wicks in this house too!

I've asked the neighbours for bread and eggs towards the weekend. They said they'd help if we got stuck. Happy to make my own bread but I've been working and it takes the pressure off making it a lot.

Bowerbird5 · 23/03/2020 22:20

Hi, haven’t caught up with everyone yet. It must be so tough for some of you.

It has been lovely and sunny here so we were out gardening this morning for a couple of hours. It is looking tidier at the top. The bin men never took the garden bin nearly two weeks ago and now have stopped. Our bin is full so filling compost bags. I haven’t been out for a week now. DH seems to be seeing sense now. Our pub has shut. They were going to do take away but after a lot of angst they have decide to close.
I am struggling with anxiety at the moment. There have been seven deaths in our county. Some are very nearby only one person named.
I have a cough and have had periods of tightness in my chest but feel I wouldn’t be able to do simple tasks in the garden and it is probably anxiety. They cancelled my GP appointment for tomorrow. I am hoping he might phone as I cried during my last appointment so he knows I am quite low but I realise he will probably be too busy.
Thankfully the summerhouse is back in action and I feel more relaxed there. Lots of people have come to the Lakes which pisses us off. Local TV showed loads walking around Windermere. Stay home. If you come from London to your holiday home fine I can understand that but don’t wander about the streets. More people in our village too. I have been home most of the last six months. I have never seen so many people here. Only recognised three. I might go for a short walk tomorrow. I plan to do an hours gardening a day if possible and might bake as we got a lot of eggs today.
Spoke to DD last night. They have had a wonderful time in NZ but now they have shut the campsite and they are in a camper van. She text her dad tonight and said they are trying to make the British go home but there are hardly any flights. They had just paid for a months airbnb yesterday. We told her to stay put as they were in NZ before all this started.
It is such a bloody worry isn’t it. Keep safe everyone. My thoughts are with you all.
For those old enough for Roald Dahl we once did a homework sheet on him. It included things like copy a drawing from the book, make a chocolate cake. I wish I had a copy but you might find something similar. Twinkle were providing some stuff free and there are quite a few things on TES for free. We do use those for lessons sometimes. Will check in tomorrow.
Ta Das
Anti bac the basin, taps regularly.
Toilet cleaned.
Worktops and putting washing up in dishwasher as convinced DH it would be better.

Can’t do anything else in bathroom as it is still a building site.

Sizeablecontours · 23/03/2020 23:21

Hi all. I hope you are all ok. I've just seen on the news that you are on the same virtually total lockdown measures as us now. Hope everyone is ok ? Flowers

If it's any consolation to you all , we started the same measures one week and a weekend ago, and our rate of infection has started to go down for the first time today, which I hope gives everyone some reassurance.

Prayer and candle so lovely Zoo Hope your dd1 and fiancé ok?

Hope you are feeling ok Shannara ? And your family?

So sorry your birthday and mother's day was so disappointing Hazel Flowers

That you are doing brilliantly and don't worry, we won't all bugger off! Smile

Foxes , We3kings sterling work from you too!

Foxes oh I used to love playing shops with dd but the trouble was, she never wanted the game to end Grin.

And We3kings that poster is so true! Grin

Hope "new normal' going ok Willow? Thank heavens for James's expertise with drains! Your grandmother's craft book sounds lovely!

How are you Lane?

Ah that's lovely about the bed KTCluck!

Really beautiful camelia Cineraria

Sorry virtual party was damp squib Toostressy. I know nothing about home edding but are you sure you are not putting too much pressure on yourself? Can you simplify it all down to the old-fashioned 3Rs in small bursts?

Lisette hope that spider is social distancing! Grin

Waves to Chic Honu and anyone I have missed!

Sorry not to do more personals; I hate to say it but I am not feeling too great tonight but symptoms could be anything frankly! Confused

In addition Dd is very stressed Sad and seems to be filtering all interactions through a prism of "everyone hates me and is against me". Sad I just can't get my head around it as nothing could be further from the truth. I tell you everyone, teens are hard. I seem to be totally crap at parenting mine anyway Sad

Going to close the screen and try and find something comforting to watch before sleeping in solitary confinement tonight! No furries as they have gone up with dh, the traitors Grin

Take care one and all!

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/03/2020 23:49

Just checking in. Haven't caught up with the thread, been discussing the implications of the new measures for both our jobs with DH. I was very anxious before the PM's announcement but relieved when it was over and feel calmer now.

Sizeablecontours · 23/03/2020 23:57

X posts Bowerbird I think anxiety is an entirely rational response atm flowers] You must be worried about your dd too (although I am glad she is enjoying NZ) I was thinking of you the other day when I saw those cases near to you on the news. Flowers

We have stayed in town because of office and because we didn't want to be the ones bringing virus to our village in the country. Sad because I missed spring at wreck2 last year because of op but needs must.

Good plan to spend some time in the summer house and in the garden generally. I forgot to say I spent a happy hour on our terrace this morning rearranging pots and tidying it up a bit and making a mental note of what needs doing next. Much better doing that than watching the news! Only downside neighbour in flats next door was playing loud music.

So sorry your doctor had to cancel but I imagine he didn't want to put you at risk. Stay safe and well Flowers

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 00:03
