A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Habit of the month: here

An explanation about the March habit of the month: Getting Dressed to Shoes here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Happy mother's day, I'm hiding from my bickering kids right now...Hmm

Zoo dd has white leggings only because she had to have them to be a snowflake in the Xmas show, otherwise I would never have bought them!!

Going to attempt to make butter chicken for dinner without several ingredients because I don't want to go to the shop...

foxessocks · 22/03/2020 09:15

willow no contact as yet but still time!

LaneBoy · 22/03/2020 09:24

Morning all. DS through the worst I think. I am not. It’s very weird

ChicCroissant · 22/03/2020 10:10

Morning all, happy mother's day here in the UK. No-one has made breakfast yet, so I guess it's down to me then Hmm Grin

Do have cards, choc and flowers though so I'm doing OK! Looks a sunny day so far, but you only have to wait a minute with the British weather.

Should do some laundry today as the two homeworkers tomorrow may need peace and quiet. Going to be a different day, but I am aiming to make it fun for DD. Catch you later ladies!

Lisette1940 · 22/03/2020 10:36

Lane glad ds is better. Are you dizzy at all?

Made banana bread. Ds is better. Think it was likely to be asthma but only time will tell.

Shannaratiger · 22/03/2020 12:02

Happy Mothers Day

Have read some of the thread but have forgotten most of it!
Think I might have had Cov, luckily DH and Ds didn't catch it so might have just been a cough.
Hope all poorly people are better soon.
Think we're on lock down for 12 weeks because Ds and DH are in high risk groups, luckily have 2 Tesco delivery's booked.

Planning on getting lots of Cleaning and decluttering done. Unfortunately tip closed so can't drop it off. Luckily have space saving bags so am going to put clothes in and put away until later!
Feeling sad for all our year 11's missing GCSE's, proms etc. loads of homework for kids to do though - preparing for daily ds melt downs.

Have to go roast lamb is nearly ready!!
Back later, will try and catch up and respond.

LaneBoy · 22/03/2020 12:11

Hi shannara
Yep lisette dizzy/aches etc problem is I can get like that from regular colds anyway. This does seem more extreme though I have to admit.

I’ve managed to eat a little soup which wasn’t nice but it’s food! Throat is starting to improve I think but still not staying awake long so I’m going to try and nap again. I’ll have a lot of thread to catch up on when I’m better!

Stilllivinginazoo · 22/03/2020 12:52

asthma advice can you share this please as I'm not sure where to look for that?

Morning everyone
Happy mother's day to everyone!I am lucky owner three fab homemade cards,a photo book(made me cry) and girls did artwork for me.my biggest gift at this time all 4 are safe❤️
Dd1 says will celebrate when this is over,I said I'm just happy she's ok for now and don't want her here as girls were in school 7dats ago,so still 7potentual exposure days there plus been very packed shops since.as she's asthmatic with chest infection currently, and partner has scarred lungs I don't want that responsibility on my shoulders for let them in if we're to come.they had venture shops for food yesterday.she said felt silly with scarf over face and partner wore latex gloves to push trolley...

Today I've moved some muscari from lawn
But basic tidying
Search (futile) couple small local shops.i was grateful green bananas and a bag rolls though,so can't complain.i looked at possible click and collect.nothing.mid April it's all fully booked.not sure what we will do from here on in.im worried about exposing D's asthma to us potentially bringing it in after being in busy shops.my OCD has always been led by fear making others I'll so it's in turbo charge now and exhausting.i keep reminding myself EVERYONE feels like thins and we just need do best to minimise things but not shopping isn't viable long term.hioefully in week or so shops will get something better in place regarding these things...

Took D's out at 630 to stroll over nature reserve as cretins let kids lose like jolly holiday yesterday pack 6-13 he old gleefully screaming up n down street.i didn't want risk run into them later.we saw 6people from a dustance-one jogger,an old couple walking hand in hand and some dog walkers (with dogs obvs).blue skies, lots blossom.seems weird nature can be so stunning even at times like this.we try to drink it in,stop marvel at a very vocal blackbird and watched bees warming up and taking off.holding these happy thoughts today as tight as I can

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 22/03/2020 14:21

Oh bloody hell, you couldn't make this up. The drains have gone pop and I have raw sewage in the garden. There's a man coming to sort it out by 5.32 (precisely) apparently, but in the meantime we have beautiful sunshine and can't go outside.

Going to do my Fiendish Puzzle in disgust.

HungryHazelEyes · 22/03/2020 15:33

Happy Mother's Day everyone!

willow that's awful news! I hope it gets sorted soon without costing an arm and a leg.

zoo I hope your DD and BF are going to be okay, sounds like they are taking precautions seriously, so that's good.

I really need to look up info on asthma and Corona virus as I have it and coughing does tighten my chest and can set off an attack. Still working though until we hear anything else. Will find out Wednesday.

Plan for today is to get laundry done- we have a tonne to do. I also need to finish cleaning up the kitchen from last night.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 22/03/2020 16:57

Luckily, I can report that the lovely James from Lanes Drains (that's actually really hard to say!) has been and fixed us. Because the drains are pre-1935, and all tangled up with trees that have TPOs on them, the council have a standing agreement that they are fixed for nothing, post-haste. The magic words "raw sewage" and "garden" got them out on a 4 hour turnaround and the offending rootball has been removed.

DS3 is now out in the (clean) garden(thank goodness for boiling water and Flash!) playing bubble blowing with WillowHound. It is very sweet!

Lisette1940 · 22/03/2020 17:22

Glad you got your drains done Willow. Am planning meals ATM. Trying to use up everything.

Had a lovely surprise - found an in date stollen cake unopened in a tin!!!

At this stage it's the little things ...

Cineraria · 22/03/2020 17:35

Wishing all of you an enjoyable Mothering Sunday. I wanted to share the lovely camellia flower we had this week with all of you. It always seems to have nice flowers for Mothering Sunday however early or late it falls.

Sorry to hear about the ear infections, Lane, I hope yours follows your son's and gets better soon.

Oh willow, that sounds horrible. Fingers crossed for a quick repair and clear up and that nothing in your garden is permanently damaged by it.

What a lovely walk, zoo. It sounds you found it really uplifting. It really surprises me that people are gathering in big groups like you saw yesterday.

Your new bed story is making me nervous, KT. We have ordered our two a new bed too. We gave up trying to dissaude them from their preference for snuggling up to someone in bed and bought them a double so they can just snuggle each other! Hope your daughter isn't grumpy tired today and that you both get a good night's sleep today.

I had a nice day today. Lie-in, albeit with more people than the bed was designed for! Nice sunny day, Facetime with mum and MiL both of whom are taking good care to stay safe which is reassuring and then DH took the boys into the dining room with this month's Cbeebies Art magazine and found a flowery fan craft for them to make together for me while I sat around being lazy. DS1 did the cutting and DS2 did the folding and sticking. I felt very soppy when they brought it out to give to me. I also get to have a long relaxing bath next. I loved the mother themed art links, SC. Thanks for the lovely things you're sharing.

Not much flying really this weekend but did give the dining room a fairly good clean up yesterday after cutting both DSes' hair.

Cross posted. Glad the drains are fixed in time to enjoy the garden today, willow.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 22/03/2020 18:55

Haven't caught up yet but had to share this 🤣

Stilllivinginazoo · 22/03/2020 19:30

we3🤣🤣🤣🤣
Cinereria that's stunning❤️

Well I've continued my food is precious campaign here and turn two of the bendiest carrots that in past would've made compost/bin transformed into vegan carrot muffins cuertesy of the lovely healthylivingjames on instagram.dead simple and it's actually g.f too but I used regular flour and switch melted coconut for regular oil.ds declared I need preserve cinnamon in case I can make anything banana related in coming weeks so I sub for allspice.smell was out of this world cooking
Zoolets had spaghetti with couple frozen meatballs last pesto and frozen cauli.they looking forward to muffins in a mo!

We did the prayers and candle in window at 7.there was a standard prayer our church message us.ds added another forums on mum's day(cute) and for truckers and shop workers giving him fooddd2 opt the I'll,lil zoo chose doctors and nurses so I said other key workers like teachers still looking after nurses children, all carers, police etc.it felt nice to know although was just us we were part of an act by a bigger group.kins of less alone?(if that makes sense?)

KTCluck · 22/03/2020 19:38

Love that We3 Grin

Ah Willow what a nightmare! Pleased it’s all sorted now. I did get plenty sleep, just un
fortunately with a limpet round my neck rather than in her own bed as I’d dared to dream! Hope yours goes better Cineraria. DH is doing bedtime to night. She’s gone quiet so hopefully a more successful night tonight. Gorgeous flower.

The stollen is coming to the naughty corner I assume Lisette?

Get taking your inhalers Hazel and other asthmatics. One of our consultants has been nagging me to make sure I’m taking it regularly and have enough to keep me going for a bit. My chest actually feels ok today after taking as prescribed for a week. Who knew they actually worked Blush

Wing flaps to Zoo, SC, Bower, Chic, Too, Expletive, Shannara, Foxes, Lane, That. Hope poorly / isolating fledglings are managing ok, and you’ve all had some Mother’s Day love.

We got out for a brisk walk along the sea front before coming back for a roast and a lazy afternoon. Spoke to family by phone - so strange not seeing everyone on Mother’s Day. Had a burst of energy to be more productive late this afternoon.

Ta Das:
✅ dishes from roast cleared
✅ s & s
✅ 2 x LOL
✅ ironing - just my work clothes since we aren’t going anywhere where we need to be smart for the foreseeable.
✅ clean clothes away
✅ rest of DD’s toys sorted
✅ downstairs hoovered and floors mopped
✅ stairs hoovered
✅ downstairs tidied

KTCluck · 22/03/2020 19:40

DD sent DH out of the room and promptly fell asleep on her own Shock. This is unheard of. Maybe the new bed will prove worthwhile after all!

Cineraria · 22/03/2020 22:22

Ooh! Fantastic! Now I'm wondering if I should ask for details of this magic bed and cancel the one I ordered!

I keep trying to tell myself that's not true for me, we3, and that do I enjoy it somewhere deep down, but sadly it probably is true!

The candle and prayer sound a nice thing to do, zoo, especially with your family's additions. Was it something your usual church suggested doing? I will be looking up those muffins too. DS1 keeps asking for carrot cake. I think he must have heard of it in a Peppa Pig or Hey Duggee episode as those are the big influences on his tastes.

Lisette1940 · 22/03/2020 22:48

Pops stollen in the naughty corner along with a laaarge glass of virtual wine. And jazz.

Lisette1940 · 22/03/2020 22:49

we3 that image holds for exercise as well as cleaning I've discovered.

Lisette1940 · 22/03/2020 22:52

Smile goodnight all. I was going to move the armchair cushions to the floor and sleep there rather than the narrow couch but remembered that a huuuuge spider lives in the living room and he shoots out across the floor at night. 🛋️

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 22/03/2020 23:18

Eek, I'm not sure I could sleep in there at all, Lisette!

Night all, must gear up for first day of Home Everything tomorrow.
