Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Morning all, well, the calm didn't last, I woke up at 4 feeling very shaky. Both DH and my work cannot entirely be done from home and I am now worried about the future of DH's business, as well as my own job. We have to have some difficult conversations today.

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 07:01

Oh Expletive I'm so sorry you and dh are under such stress. I hope the difficult conversations go as well as possible in circs Flowers Flowers

Well my previous procrastination has well and truly come to bite me on the bum this morning! Basically, I have the start of a cold/flu-type symptoms so I am self-isolating ... guess where .... you guessed it ... I'm in the boudoir of doom!

Absolutely NO excuse but to tackle it now!

Grin Grin [aarrgghhh!] Grin

OP posts:
Lisette1940 · 24/03/2020 07:35

Oh SC I'm so sorry to hear this. Hopefully it's only a cold. I keep thinking of the Princess in the room of hay with Rumplestilskin telling her to spin it into gold. Is the boudoir of doom so bad?

Lisette1940 · 24/03/2020 07:39

Expletive will be thinking of you today. I think the underlying stress is causing a lot of lack of sleep. And I can well understand your worries.

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 07:50

Aye, disturbed sleep at a time like this, when we are all worried and all normal routines are disrupted, is very understandable Flowers

Lisette Ha! Grin I used to love the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin as a child, despite it being so brutal. (The putative baby-snatching and isn't he split down the middle at the end?) If only I were spinning gold this morning ... suffice to say that boudoir's so bad I need to resume clearing paths on the floor ... Blush Blush

Dh has managed to buy some toilet roll!!! So much uncertainty today and a lot of stress about our jobs but he fact he got loo roll has really cheered me 😂 he only took one pack and he's going to split it and take half to my mum and dad's house (and will of course just leave it outside and text them!)

Also the dc have been cracking me up this morning, they decided to play the classic hide 3 small items and the other one finds them, was going very well until ds had his turn, he promptly his them all and forgot where he hid them , neither of them can now find them so game over 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

foxessocks · 24/03/2020 10:28

Agree re sleep btw, I feel I am sleeping ok but feel very tired in the day so obviously I'm not really, I guess anxiety is just there even when sleeping for all of us atm Sad however I do think we will adjust to all this and become less anxious over time, at the moment we are being so bombarded with news updates and new rules, uncertainty of money and jobs and most importantly health, we will have to learn how to prioritise our mental health and just take things slowly.

Not sure that made a lot of sense Smile

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 24/03/2020 11:20

ED, Stressy, foxes so sorry jobs and homeschooling are a worry. Sending strength and calm Gin . I feel a total fraud at present because DD and DS3's online schooling is continuing with no change, and all the extra free online exercise / music / games etc is actually making my life kind-of easier. However, having DS1 (who is entirely nocturnal and finished his essay on Armenian Democracy at 6am today) is making for much less space in the house. Today is also DS2's birthday and apparently his GF is going to appear at the gate, throw him his present and shout Happy Birthday.

YY foxes to the high-level of underlying stress. As DH has now started his new job I'm back to being Chief Cook And Bottle-Washer and running the house single-handed. I also Coffee Provider In Chief. With DS1 home, we are back to 3 LOL a day to stop ourselves drowning in unwashed socks, and the budget has gone to hell, nevermind the menu! I have near-constant heartburn and struggling to eat sensibly or sleep enough.

Ds3 is very frightened by the snatches of information he's hearing from the internet, and this I think is setting WillowHoung off, who is being even more of a yappy pillock than usual. I am trying to provide scaffolding in the day with Flylady, but I'm not sure it's working.

Ta Das from yesterday:
☑️ Dog walked
☑️ Bathrooms S&S
☑️ 3x LOL, all dried on the line
☑️ DW rotated and run, twice
☑️ Banana cake baked before the bananas asked for voting rights
☑️ Kitchen floor swept
☑️ Tea retrieved from freezer and served mostly on time
☑️ Presents wrapped for DS2
☑️ Socially distant Tesco trip for donuts, birthday cards and bread. Naturally, 10 minutes after we got home we had the text saying DD's meds could be collected.
☑️ Emptied DS1's wardrobe so he can put all his uni stuff away
☑️ 90 minute nap after lunch ☺️

Ta Didn'ts
❎ Any work worth a damn - I really can't concentrate
❎ Any hoovering

Ta Das today
☑️ Birthday breakfast for DS2
☑️ S&S 2 loos
☑️ Dog walk
☑️ DW rotation
☑️ First LOL on
☑️ Blew bubbles in the garden with the dog.
☑️ Tweeted the county council to point out that building a new leisure centre is surely not central to the fight against coronavirus and to please shut the site down. I am becoming what I hate.

Anyway, that, fear not, we will not bugger off to fb and leave you stranded. New mantra: No Fledgling Left Behind. This is such a lovely thread and we are all in this together. SC, get better soon. We3, Lane, KT, Hazel, Chic, Cineraria, Lisette, 🍒🙋.

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 12:13

It made absolute sense Foxes! Flowers it's very difficult to feel comfortable in, and get a handle on, a constantly evolving situation. Hope your dc find their hidden items soon! Grin

Happy birthday to your ds2 Willow and that's so lovely of his gf to throw his present over the gate! I hope your ds3 is ok Bear and arf at bananas with voting rights Grin

I have done a lot of faffing about (upstairs) this morning and have finally started getting stuck in to boudoir.

Also because I am self-solating on an upper floor, as much as poss anyway, I have been on the internal telephone to dh and dd in the basement giving them instructions as to how to proceed with laundry. Do you know that party game where someone is blind-folded and you have to give them detailed instructions as to what to do?Grin Grin
Honestly, it was like just like that! Who knew there were so many little detailed things you do automatically, that are incredibly laborious to explain!

OP posts:
TooStressyTooMessy · 24/03/2020 13:05

.

Oh no SC, hope you can at least take the opportunity to improve boudoir! Grin at washing instructions.

Feel a little better today, less overwhelmed. Think there will be ups and downs and will have to massively decrease my expectations of what I can actually achieve homeschooling. At the end of the day school is no longer the priority. Where I do feel overwhelmed still, bizarrely, is with one of the DC’s sports that have sent out a huge amount of hone conditioning exercises that I am really going to struggle to get them to do. Need to have a think about that one. They need to or will be very behind when / if things ever resume with sport.

Going to get on now and investigate what learning is taking place upstairs Hmm.

Big wing flaps to all in these difficult times.

THATscurryfungeBITCH · 24/03/2020 15:55

stressy that sounds tough, we managed all the school work for dcs 1 2 and 3 today. Not touched dc4s though! In fairness he slept all afternoon!

Lisette1940 · 24/03/2020 17:43

SC it's best they learn for the future. Going forward laundry duties could be shared 😜😁👍 #newskills

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 18:54

I guess so Lisette! Grin. Didn't expect to have to remind them to actually take the washing out of the machine though; I think they were expecting the house fairy to do that!

Toostressy is there any way you could make the conditioning exercises in to a game, or a competition maybe?

Well done with the home edding That!

Have done admin and 15 mins X 10 in boudoir before collapsing.
I am trying to tackle the underlying things which lead to it being so untidy all the time ie clothing storage.

Haven't really seen anyone all day. Had a bit of a natter with the post lady out of the window from two floors up, that's it really!

Hope everyone is ok.

OP posts:
TooStressyTooMessy · 24/03/2020 21:02

Tackling the underlying things sounds very sensible SC, and is exactly what Clutterbug says to do actually.

Thanks, I think making it fun is the only way. It’s gymnastics. She has stretching (coach says this is the most important one), jumps and handstand / conditioning work.

Had a brainwave today and realised the jumps can be done on the trampoline which we are very lucky to have at home. Both DDs happy to do this and can make a game of it.

The conditioning things I can maybe make into a gym ‘class’ twice a week or so which might be ok.

It is the stretching. Had planned to do it before bed but don’t think that will work so need to try it tomorrow morning I think. Stretching (to her) is boring and of course at times uncomfortable so if anyone has any ideas to make it fun I am up for that.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 24/03/2020 21:17

Hmm, no ideas at all on stretching, Stressy, sorry.

DS2 has declared today "the best birthday ever", which is lovely.

Not really achieved much else except 3 x LOL (2 off the line and away), a nap and no real fighting. Might try getting up early to write tomorrow.

On my second glass of white and waiting for the tension in the house to dissipate. See you all tomorrow.

foxessocks · 24/03/2020 21:20

stressy - bribery!?

Sizeablecontours · 24/03/2020 21:36

Toostressy how about resistance bands or when dd used to dance, they partnered up for stretching sometimes? Maybe you could do that with her? Or maybe an old fashioned star chart with a promised reward at the end? Also, there are quite a few videos on-line about how to make stretching fun. Good luck!

Aw bless your ds2 Willow how lovely to say that about his birthday! And well done to you for pulling it off!

Have a good anti-procrastination day everyone! It's really difficult to be single-minded and goal-oriented in current circumstances, but it might help if we give ourselves "permission" to take a couple of hours away from anxiety and worry (set an actual period of time) in order to focus on other things Flowers
