Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

Sizeablecontours · 28/02/2020 17:55

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Habit of the month: here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Hello. Still haven't caught up with the thread

DH working from home as from today. Offered to go in spare room (also a bit of an office) but I suggested we squash him into a corner of the main room downstairs, but now the schools are closing may need to clear the spare room in case he needs some privacy. Must check if the tip is still open! I will be opening the wine tonight and I'm eating rather out-of-date macarons living the dream

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 18/03/2020 22:05

I had wine (just a glass) last night and tonight, Chic. I am trying to keep things in an even keel, but everything is so odd and it is affecting eating patterns. We've not eaten together as a family since Sunday. DS3 is absorbing all the emotion, so is very close to the edge.

All extra-curricular stuff has gone online or stopped altogether. We have agreed to still pay for music lessons and kung fu while we can, in the hope they are still there when this is over. DS1 will not be charged the 3 term of Hall fees, but has a contract on a house starting on 1 July - what happens to that? And what happens to his student loan? I predict explosions when he and DS2 try to shake down again into their "rightful" places in the house.

Can't believe we are here, when 4 days ago I was chatting about being pleased we were tidying DD's room! Trying to get to Tesco at 6am tomorrow, as DS2 has hollow legs and feeding 3 teens again is going to be complex.

TooStressyTooMessy · 18/03/2020 22:09

Hey, still here, another long day! Back tomorrow and will catch up on thread then.

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 22:14

It’s all so bloody weird isn’t it.

First death in local hospital too. All feeling very real.

DD did get upset earlier about not being able to meet friends as normal. Had a frank but hopefully validating and understanding conversation with her about how awful this is for us all, and scary and sad and frustrating, but that yes, it is aimed at preventing more people dying. Never thought I’d have that conversation with my child.

Zero expectations from the next few days except trying to set up the google classroom thing and keeping up with what the school set (will also check for homework) and laundry I think.

The weird symptom I was getting with meds is quite bad again so I’m wondering if it’s not the brand after all. I may just need to accept I can’t handle this dose. Got my psych appt next month so maybe I’ll just ask to go back on the lower one :( but the reduction caused MH issues to flare so who knows.

ChicCroissant · 18/03/2020 23:05

I think I'll be having more than one glass. My very part-time work was exam invigilation which also seems to be out of the running now! I do feel for the teachers and pupils involved, DD's school is one of the few which has remained open to all years locally.

DD does some extra-curricular stuff, she's had an exam cancelled, one has said they are stopping classes and I'm expecting the dance classes might stop soon as well Sad The one thing that might continue is her music lesson, as that is a 1 to 1. I live in hope, but she can always practice at home. I have a horrible feeling that the two concerts we have booked in July won't go ahead either, as well as a family party close to that date.

I will keep up with this thread but I'm avoiding MN in general as despite hiding the CV topic from my active threads, I'm finding the place a bit hysterical ATM. This thread is still a thing of beauty though Star

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 23:12

I’m actually annoyed that ballet is continuing. I feel pressured to go, but I know the principal is pressured to still rehearse from the show because so far the theatre is only saying they’ll close for two weeks! The show is in just under three weeks 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 23:55

ta da
✅up showered and out for parenting course
✅picked up some shopping
✅remembered to check blood pressure

Errrr that would be it

Stilllivinginazoo · 19/03/2020 04:43

Morning from insomnia central

Sending superbig hugs to everyone

ED I'd opt out of school in your shoes.i need contact council regard D's ECHP.as his roll school AND outreach school offering potentially online workI feel if it's possible to freeze his application til this is over it should.hes extra highly stressed and taking him out to new setting when girls home will be incredibly challenging,an added burden to the system/teachers that I feel isn't necessary and as he cannot express himself regarding illness foolhardy as I can spot he is out of sorts on some levels and I seriously doubt school staff who don't know him well could.

Willow, but everyone really we are all here for each other lovely.no one is expecting to be anything less than anxious but for now we plod on with some basics and in time adapt to the new normal.all children will be unsettled, those with asd/Sen esp so and we will continue to do best we can,as we always have.no one should expect more of themselves and I declare no putting ourselves down we aren't managing enough/keeping up in the days, and weeks ahead.this is a time for super kindness to ourselves.xxxxx

Dd2 distraught exams and her future schooling up in the air

Sizeablecontours · 19/03/2020 08:05

Good morning everyone!

I've been trying to write individual posts this morning but I kept crossing them out for various reasons... so this will have to do ... .

I just wanted to say how sorry I am for those dc whose exams/dance shows/other events have been cancelled owing to Covid-19. It is hugely disappointing and stressful for them when they have worked so hard.

The same goes of course to people whose livelihood is being impacted too (Chic Flowers)

I know the situation (and therefore the tone) in the UK is different to that over here across the Channel but I must admit to being very surprised that any non-essential trips out are still being permitted or contemplated.

The strong message over here is that if we have any symptoms at all we must self-isolate. Also that the best way of preventing spread is to behave as if we have symptoms even if we don't.

As a doctor said on UK news yesterday, everyone thinks that the preventative measures taken prior to the pandemic hitting are overkill, and afterwards it feels as if we hadn't done enough.

I hope I am not being hyperbolic but as far as I can ascertain cold clear maths offers an explanation. In summary, the rate of the spread of the infection is proportional to the number of people infected. Therefore, each infected person is expected to infect a certain number of people — around 2.5 right now — who each in turn go on to infect 2.5 more, and on and on, which is why social distancing is so important. And none of us can know for sure whether we are infected or not.

Flowers Flowers Flowers

Great list KTCluck and We3kings! Star Star

So sorry about retainer Foxes what a nightmare!

Lovely to hear about your horse-mad course leader Lane Smile

And good luck to those of you being thrust in to home education without much advance warning or preparation Tinselette!

DD has her first proper set of lessons wired through via the school on-line hub today! She is actually quite enthusiastic and has made herself a timetable involving school work/dog-walking/running. I appreciate I have it easy with an autonomous sixteen year old, much harder to keep younger dc engaged and motivated.

Take care fledglings and most importantly of all, keep safe and well Flowers and scrub those door, fridge, cupboard, and kettle handles!

OP posts:
Sizeablecontours · 19/03/2020 08:14

Zoo I meant to say, would the powers that be contemplate wiring through work to ds without him having to visit outreach centre or could you push for that? This situation may continue for a quite a while and a bit of on-line work could help with distraction/anxiety although obviously you know what suits your ds best Flowers

So sorry to hear about your dd2's best friend; that has got to be very hard for them both, particularly at their age Sad

TooStressyTooMessy · 19/03/2020 08:43

Morning all. Struggling to keep up with the thread atm but wanted to post and say hello.

SC, I’m sure we all understand if you can’t manage personals etc - this is a lovely chatty thread and I certainly feel there is enough love in this little MN corner that I don’t feel left out if not mentioned for a while by anyone or if links don’t get updated by the thread leader.

.

Sizeablecontours · 19/03/2020 10:42

I have a fever. SI begins.

Still pretty sure it’s tonsillitis but rules are rules. Fever was only slight but I’m normally on the cool side. Feel like shit anyway, can’t swallow other than tea, epic headache, higher pulse and body aches but who can tell if that’s relevant as they happen a lot anyway 😂

Here’s a pic that made me laugh today

Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020
LaneBoy · 19/03/2020 11:12

BTW I just joined a Skype chat group from another thread I’m a regular on. If anyone is staying away from MN and wants to do similar - FB, WhatsApp etc I’m up for that x

I’m lying in bed, paracetamol has kicked in. Still don’t think it’s CV but avoiding ibuprofen anyway

Stilllivinginazoo · 19/03/2020 12:10

Lane*🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 19/03/2020 12:28

Ooh thanks for the heads up about Kahoot! Zoo I've been looking at stuff like that for us and yeh DC to do with my DGM because she'll be bored out of her mind being in on her own and the DC will miss her.

All I've achieved today is S&S and keeping the dc busy

ChicCroissant · 19/03/2020 13:00

I'm up for a FB chat anytime, if any fledgling wants to add me - PM me for details

I don't Skype but I may have to start, one of DD's activities which has been cancelled is planning to do something online. Still thinking about WhatsApp, I should just bite the bullet by downloading it and then block anyone from adding me to a group without my say so Grin That was my big objection to it last time, I didn't use it either I'll admit.

Lane, I hope it is tonsillitis and not CV (not often I'd wish tonsillitis on anyone as it is hideous)

Stilllivinginazoo · 19/03/2020 13:15

Tada
Crochet hooks acquired
Colouring book and pens for lil zoo from garden centre that has the works(really busy AND cafe open and busyAngrywe won't be going again for quite some time I feel)

Contact ds school to sort online learning
Email echp offering freeze D's case til after this has died down as he has online work from roll school, sisters online learning at home and he has asthma and no capacity regarding telling me he feels I'll.ive asked email me their decision with understanding once pressure on systems is over and things are better with the world they will inform me process will gear up again and how long we have to complete section we were at?
Can I have a gold star for anti procrastination?

Lunch

Door knocked minute ago.ds head year there holding a baguette, apple and carton of Ribena offering his free school lunch!!I declined asking it's passed on to someone more in need as he only really eats what I make him and I'm sure there are many others who could benefit if everyone who didn't really need it said so

Right, for reasons unknown I'm really cold and shivery today (maybe drop in temp outside?)so once done few more jobs and phone chat with camhs I'm heading hit shower and have a date with my colouring bookSmile

Lane hope you feel better soon lovely

foxessocks · 19/03/2020 17:18

I'm up for any kind of messaging if people want to stay away from MN , happy either way (well as happy as I can be ATM!)

Thats good they are looking out for kids zoo and nice of you to give it back. Ds nursery was handing out milk and biscuits at end of the day as they had leftovers, I did take some as they said they didn't want it going to waste and we get through a lot!

Well our boss has been a bit of an arse today made some unhelpful comments , kind of not appreciating how people often live pay cheque to pay cheque...grr

Got new retainer and it hurts, other one on back of teeth is being fixed next week if orthodontist isn't shut Confused

And the dc are definitely picking up on our stress and starting to act up big time... I feel bad for them. Need to have a chat with dh later about trying to stay calm, be kind to ourselves and each other etc...easier said than done but getting frustrated with each other doesn't help.

That's my thoughts for this afternoon!! Off to make jam toast for the dc dinner because that's what they want and I just can't be bothered to cook Blush

LaneBoy · 19/03/2020 18:17

Cool :) I have a few fledglings in my FB anyway if people want to PM me I can add you and make a group?

ta da
✅napped
✅watched an episode of the Split - counting this as an achievement as I’ve not managed watching anything recently
✅started writing up parenting course... very weird not knowing when the last one (or the last two aces sessions) will be! Will carry on after dinner, DSD treated us to a pizza (delivered to the doorstep non contact!) but I managed a slice and one chicken wing and feel sick

foxessocks · 19/03/2020 18:27

Do you just need our name for FB lane

LaneBoy · 19/03/2020 18:36

Yes, name and I guess what your profile pic is so I know it’s the right one unless you have a very unusual name :o
