Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Lisette1940 · 19/03/2020 19:40

Thanks all - i see the dot but when I click nothing happens. I can't get into MyMumsnet. I'll ask the admin again via site stuff.

Thanks for trying to help.

ChicCroissant · 19/03/2020 19:42

Have you got a pop-up blocker?

(You can probably guess why I'm asking this, because it does stop the PM box appearing IME)

Lisette1940 · 19/03/2020 20:03

Thanks Chic I've made contact with you now via facebook. Had to use Firefox. Thanks to you all for the help. I'm off for 20 mins then will pm Lane

ChicCroissant · 19/03/2020 20:04

I was wondering if that was you! Be right with you ...

Lisette1940 · 19/03/2020 20:04

Managed to message Lane.

Hoorah!

Sizeablecontours · 19/03/2020 20:38

Evening all!

I've just watched Ch4 news. Really wish I hadn't Sad Sad Sad

Lane I've just sent you a pm. What a great idea. I'd love to join a Facebook group as Skype doesn't seem to work very well in our house. I don't want to intrude though if it's a private thing!? Hope nausea has eased and you don't feel any worse Flowers

Zoo Star Star for anti-procrastination! Also, nice gesture of solidarity head of year, even though it was somewhat misdirected. Hope crocheting therapeutic!

Lisette I had a problem with pm-ing a week or so ago and Mumsnet HQ were very nice about sorting it out.

for Foxes hope tooth pain easing tonight and littlies a bit calmer. So sorry your boss was an arse Angry Just what you don't need in these stressful times.

We3kings hope your dgm is bearing up Flowers

A very strange day. Very, very quiet here. Tried to concentrate on Flying but was a bit distracted and not terribly effective. Felt very tired. I was hoping dh would be a bit more available now the office is on a different sort of schedule, but he's the type that clams up when stressed, is very "objective focused" and he is fire-fighting like mad at the office, so not much conversation. Streets eerily quiet when out walking the dogs, but everyone opened their apartment windows at 8pm and cheered for health workers. It doesn't feel very cheery here though in general tbh.

Please keep washing your hands everyone. And isolate as much as possible (I know it is very hard/impossible for some on here). I hope my post this morning about social distancing didn't seem too "judgy mare". Blush With this country here being about a week to ten days ahead of UK, I am quite anxious that you lot keep safe and well. We all found it surreal a week or so here and didn't know whether to go out or not but it's all got a lot more real since.
Flowers

Sorry, was intending that to be a bit more of a positive post but it wasn't ... Confused

Ta da:
4 loads of washing
40 mins boudoir - so awful I gave up Blush
long bubble bath: pedicure, manicure, etc.
dog walks x 1
cleared kitchen up after dd sorted lunch (how can one person make so much mess heating up soup and putting cheese and bread out?)
made sort of chicken marengo type thing with onions, olives, red peppers for supper
tried to find out about elderly neighbour who isn't answering door, isn't responding to notes, and whose closest relation isn't answering e-mails
spoke to a couple of friends
made brown bread in bread machine
tried to help dd with essay about William of Orange but without much success ...

sc SadSad it's all very strange. Tomorrow is last day of school but ds had last day nursery today. Dh still having to go into work but I haven't been anywhere other than the shop when necessary. Oh and to get my retainer sorted but they were very quiet and very good at hand washing and sanitising! I am certainly not visiting my parents or anybody vulnerable that's for sure.

It didn't come across judgy at all btw.

Looking forward to seeing you on the FB group!

ChicCroissant · 19/03/2020 20:58

I don't think it has sunk in with DD yet that tomorrow may be the last day of school this academic year. It probably only hit me this afternoon when I saw a note from a different school which is partially closed tomorrow and is doing a leavers event in the morning for the year 11 and 13! DD's school have been good about putting lessons online this week so I think they'll get a steady flow of work from the teachers.

KTCluck · 19/03/2020 21:23

Evening everyone!

Had a difficult day at work today. It was quiet as most patients had cancelled, but we have had various discussions / planning meetings / training on protective wear etc and I think it hit us all today that very soon what we’ve seen on tv going on in hospitals elsewhere is going to be our reality. It’s quite scary, especially seeing how serious and worried our consultants are. I could feel myself getting a bit panicky so took myself off to do some menial tasks that proved therapeutic. Have tried to explain to DH when I got home but I don’t think he quite gets the seriousness of it yet.

Managed a little bit of flying:
✅ LOL
✅ beds made
✅ replenished fruit supply on way to work
✅ Indian takeaway demolished to cheer me up
✅ takeaway rubbish in bin, plates in DW
✅ living room straightened before bed

SC it didn’t sound judgy at all. 40 minutes in the boudoir is a good start! Thanks again for KCC.

Zoo sounds like a sensible plan regarding the EHCP.

Lane FB group sounds like a good idea for when MN gets a bit much. I’d like to join if that’s ok. Will attempt a PM...

Hope all fledglings are ok. Waves to Bower, Foxes, Chic, Too, Lisette, We3, Willow, Hazel, Cineraria and anyone I’ve missed. Hope isolation isn’t too trying for those of you in it.

KTCluck · 19/03/2020 21:27

Ah, lost bits of post

Expletive have you come to a decision re: school? It’s hard, but I don’t think there’s a correct answer, you just have to do what feels right.

Hope you got essay sorted That

Lisette1940 · 19/03/2020 21:56

Ta das today include cleaning my home office and the main bathroom.

Working from home is going to be very strange. I am allowed to in normal circumstances but prefer being in an office.

LaneBoy · 19/03/2020 22:12

Thinking of you @Bowerbird5 and hoping you’re ok!

Yes Bowerbird hope you are ok Flowers

I think it is very, very understandable to be panicky and scared KTCluck, given the circumstances. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to stay at home, can't begin to imagine how it is for those of you on the front line Flowers

Chic and Foxes I hope the last day at school/nursery tomorrow is not too upsetting for your dc Bear Bear

In some ways I think our youngsters have a built-in "selfishness" (I mean in a really good way!!) that is somewhat protective in this sort of situation. Equally they are so vulnerable and dependent on us being calm and resourceful too.

I wish dd's school were being a bit better about on-line work. I feel a bit hypocritical saying this as I am a tech numpty of the highest order, but about 60% of the older /senior teachers haven't got to grips with the on-line hub yet, which only really got going properly a couple of years back. So it tends to be the senior students are the worst served. All in all it's back in the dark ages really ... .

Waves to Tinselette and everyone else!

Having trouble sleeping but going to try and get my head down now. G'night all!

ExpletiveDelighted · 20/03/2020 07:39

Morning all,

DS will be staying home from Monday. We have had to fill in a form with either carry on from Monday, stay off, or stay off for the rest of term but consider going back after Easter, so we have put the latter to keep options open but who knows what the situation will be by then. The new laws being put in place will remove the absolute obligation to provide the education stated in EHCPs (which is a worry for the longer term, could be the thin end of a wedge).
