Mad March Fledglings Fly in to action 2020

A warm welcome to the monthly thread where we (loosely) follow the Flylady housekeeping system here to combat CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) with lots of virtual wine, chat and mutual support along the way. The thread leader of the month will post a link to Flying activities daily. Quite a few of us have been on here for a while, so we may seem cliquey, but we really aren't, and all newcomers, lurkers, returnees, regulars, and intermittent regulars are very welcome!

Very simply, Flylady is a zone-based cleaning system which we follow to varying degrees, depending on our individual homes, circumstances and energy levels. There are five zones and at the beginning and the end of the month we usually straddle Zone 1 and Zone 5. When you first start decluttering, cleaning, and organizing your zones, Flylady encourages you to spend 15 minutes per day decluttering in the current zone.

Each week, we work in a different zone. Each month, we repeat all the zones. After a few months of following this system consistently, you should start to see an improvement in the main areas of your house.

Pop on to the Flylady website to have a closer look about how to get started here but signing up for emails will probably lead to very many landing in your inbox. Also there has been some concern about securely downloading pdfs from the site so proceed with caution.

The Babysteps system is a light 31-day introduction to the system which familiarises you with Flylady routines (such as dressing to shoes, shining your sink etc) and with her philosophy, which emphasises self-care, her abhorrence of perfectionism and the adage that you’re never behind - just jump in where you are at - even if you only do 5 mins work, that is so much better than doing nothing at all!

There is a morning routine and an evening routine to keep things ticking over and a weekly home cleaning hour (which most of us find tight!) to change bed sheets, mop, hoover, take out rubbish etc. We've found over the years that the system isn’t brilliant for major decluttering so you might want to supplement with Kondo or another decluttering system. Flylady doesn’t want us cleaning all day so she is very keen on using a timer. Clean and declutter with focus, then stop and do something more interesting instead!

In addition each day has a purpose, see the daily focus here:
Monday: weekly home cleaning hour (can be split into ten minute sections and spread over week)
Tuesday: plan and play (menu planning, family event planning, doc appts etc)
Wednesday: anti-procrastination day
Thursday: errand day
Friday: clear out purses, bags, cars, date night
Saturday: family fun
Sunday: lift your spirits.

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any qs. And remember, there is NO wrong or right way of doing this, it is about adapting the system to suit your life circumstances, which will be different from someone else's, so feel free to ignore any step or routine that doesn't suit you or your home! And don't be put off by the barftastically twee language of the Flylady site, as the underlying system is sound.

And if/when it all gets too much: come and take a seat by the fire in our candelit, specially adapted, virtual "naughty" corner where you can retreat and enjoy all manner of lovely things such as fluffy pillows warm blankets, fine teas, strong coffee, and platters of sumptuous foodstuffs offered with lashings of support from fellow fledglings.

There may be mention of Ned (and his cousins Ted and Fred) who started their lives as autocorrections, but who have morphed in to virtual helpers, and are borrowed by thread members from time-to-time when the going gets tough on Mount Washmore.

Most days we pop on to post our "to do" and "ta da" lists of what we’ve managed to do and have a bit of a natter. Please don't compare your list with someone else's as this is all about individual progress.

More info follows (but again, please note we advise only looking at the pdfs and not downloading them):

** launch pad (general guidance and info) here

** daily babysteps pdf (ignore the ones that don't suit you or your home) here

** week day missions (some fledglings find it easier to do them at weekends) here

** info about zones (explanation of how zones work) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2017/09/02/please-explain-the-zones/

here]]

** weekly zones (a rough weekly guide to which area of the house we are tackling currently, again adapt to suit yourself) [[http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/zones/

here]] and here

** daily focus (helpful guide to allocate a certain day for a certain task) here

** deep cleaning lists pdf (only attempt when you have decluttered as you can't clean clutter!) here

Good luck and happy Flying one and all!

Supermarkets here have had that strategy going for a while btw, the first hour or so of trading is restricted to elderly customers only. I feel a bit sorry for elderly night-owls though!

I went to the co op this morning and managed to get what I needed thankfully but there was no fresh veg, no tins of tomatoes or beans , no paracetamol. I managed to get bread for me and my friend who is self isolating, also got her some lemsip as at least it does have paracetamol in it and I got her and her kids some little treats, hope it cheers them up slightly!

My two are still at school / nursery today but it was very quiet at drop off.

And very frustratingly my new retainer has come off the back of my teeth Sad I do have an appointment anyway tomorrow to pick up other retainer but they won't let me in with the dc so just depends on if school and nursery still open by then!!

Right, I must get up and do something!

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 18/03/2020 11:20

My neighbour just told me that our local Aldi has pasta in not sure if it will be nationwide though. We are ok for pasta as I buy the huge bag from farm foods. Neighbours rang this morning and asked if we needed anything and said she will do the same each day we are stuck in bless her. School messaged to say they are preparing homework packs for all DC who are self isolating so I asked if she would go and pick those up for us when they're ready.

First morning of isolation has consisted of
Making beds
DC tidied rooms and got dressed
S&S
Ironing
LOL
Breakfast
In the garden for an hour
Sat and done homework/workbooks for an hour

Now having a Lego rollercoaster building competition

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 13:42

I’m glad big shops are giving OAPs shopping time but it does worry me that many of those will then have to pay for the bus to get there :( concession passes for OAPs here are only allowed from 9.30am.

Lost faith in humanity a little bit today. Popped into Coop near the children’s centre, they actually had plenty of fresh stuff today so I got a bag full of needed items (couldn’t carry more anyway). Queuing up and the poor checkout lady was having to tell someone that no they couldn’t buy six loaves of bread, as per the “no more than two of anything” signs. He tried giving some to his wife who already had different bread. Kept arguing FFS. The lady said one man had been in five times that day to try and get round the rules 🤬

A local shop had also inflated the price of a small bottle of calpol to a tenner 🤬 my FSW reported them to trading standards and they made them refund the customer though. But FML. What is wrong with people 🤬🤬🤬

KTCluck · 18/03/2020 13:45

Our local co-op was pretty bare too Foxes. Got milk and biscuits and Mother’s Day cards. Thankfully we are still well stocked from Aldi for the foreseeable. Rubbish about the retainer.

We3 rollercoaster competition sounds brilliant

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 13:50

Solihull was good but weird. One of the leaders was off to SI, and hardly any parents showed up. We got most of it done in the first hour (no crèche either so one had to leave early) and it was even more informal and chatty than normal. I ended up staying anyway while she caught up with someone who had arrived late - TBH so much is changing that I decided a bit of familiarity like staying the same amount of time as usual would be really good for me. I also helped her clear up at the end as otherwise she’d have been alone doing it and we just chatted generally (she’s horse mad sc and showed me her two, and was telling me all about the discipline she’s learning) so it was really nice. They’ve decided to cancel next week, as so few of us are likely to make it, and there’s no new material covered in the final session anyway. But they’ll get in touch about arranging a picnic or something in the summer which will be lovely.

I’ve had the rest of the couscous from yesterday with feta and cucumber 😋😋😋 later on I need to put some stuff I bought in the freezer - plan to chop up some celery and onions as a sauce base, and make some cheese and ham sandwiches that can be individually defrosted ready for toasties.

KTCluck · 18/03/2020 13:55

Cross post lane. It’s awful how selfish people are being. The situation seems to be bringing out both the best and the worst in people

Stilllivinginazoo · 18/03/2020 14:10

Bits it's not that one...i might try and find the thread again and where it is then get one you clever lot link it.soneone had big list fab sounding resources
Foxes sorry about retainer.hope you can get it sorted
We3 Lego rollercoaster wins you creative isolation award of the dayStarI feel rather put to shame with zoolets all on various devices...

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 14:19

Yes I was wondering if they’ll remove restrictions about travel time but would that make it worse if they are then on more crowded early buses (as presumably they are still full of commuters in the mornings)

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 18/03/2020 14:23

I can't claim ingenuity for the rollercoaster zoo. I found a 30 day Lego challenge online.

We also drew theme park rides and DC are trying to recreate the Mother's Day cards which they've made at school but we won't get.

Have also had lunch put the ironing away, dishes, swept up and started cooking the gammon joint for dinner.

Did some reading and now we've cracked the board games out.

Going to let them go on iPads in a bit but only to do school stuff.

DD’s school closed for years 7-9 as of tomorrow! She will be gutted.

It does say children of NHS etc workers can go in for childcare (so not following timetable etc understandably) which is a relief to see

Lisette1940 · 18/03/2020 16:02

That is rubbish about the retainer Foxes. Hopefully the stars will align so that your kids are in school/nursery and you can pick it up.

Ds is off school from Friday probably until August (Scotland). We are all entering the world of home schooling with some school support. We have spoken to him about it and he has such a sad face - he'll miss his friends. Even sadder face when I mentioned learning French or improving his handwriting. Might just teach him to type to get around it Smile

Hope you are all well. Beautiful day here today.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 18/03/2020 18:54

Evening. It's been a rollercoaster couple of days here and the steroids have not been helping! My adrenaline is through the roof and I think my cough is now an anxiety-cough 😡.

DS1 has been told to move out of hall if he possibly can, and DH is collecting him on Friday. We took DS2 out of school yesterday because DH and I are both on the "be careful" list, but that's all moot following the announcement this evening that all schools are to close.

I have taken a full inventory of foodstuffs, cleaning products, toiletries / personal items and medicines. I am planning a menu with what we've got and trying to keep us a week in hand just in case, without stockpiling. Online schooling is continuing for DD and DS3, although the connection keeps dropping. They are disgusted by this.

Trying very hard to keep going and use Flying for structure, but it turns out I'm a bit rubbish at really long term indeterminate stress. Scrubbed the kitchen, bathrooms and sanitised all door handles, light switches, bannisters etc this morning, the DS2 cooked and it looks like a bomb's gone off again.

Oh, and DH appears to have given me nits.

I think I'll go to bed.

ExpletiveDelighted · 18/03/2020 19:03

We are in a conundrum. The education announcement has said there will be an exception for those with EHCPs. Which is most of DS's school. He wants to keep going if he can, but DH is on the be careful list too. Gah!

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 19:25

Think I have the tonsillitis type thing the caglets have had. Marvellous. Can’t swallow, ears hurt and have an epic headache (no cough or fever) and want to go to bed 😭

Saw that our local bus company is going to accept OAP passes at all hours now so that’s good.

DD managed ok with the news, hasn’t been off video chat all evening! I’ve reassured her we won’t stop her using her phone in the day etc so she will have plenty of time to chat, and that DH and I will come up with a plan over the weekend

foxessocks · 18/03/2020 20:02

I'm coming up with a plan at the weekend too lane! I think I need a few days to process it all. Also will depend on if things change for mine and dh work ...

It's the uncertainty isn't it!

Hope everyone okay Flowers

LaneBoy · 18/03/2020 20:09

Yes I think it’s important to just let the dust settle first, there’s no need to rush into anything just chill for a bit

I think that the school is setting work straight away though unfortunately so we will have to do something anyway.

Feel like garbage. Thankfully DH (also feeling crap but that’s normal for him atm) has got up to do dinner with the toddler helping

DSD home from work and ranting a lot! Argh

Sizeablecontours · 18/03/2020 21:17

Expletive don't want to intrude on your family decision but from the perspective over here, without hyperbole or exaggeration, with your dh being on be careful list, I would err on the side of extreme caution.
