After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Charity shop trip done. They had nothing I wanted (wanky Kilmer jars for my kitchen, vintage Pyrex or cheap as designer clothes!) so a bag of stuff and a cat scratcher gone. Nothing new in.

StealthNinjaMum · 25/04/2018 11:34

That's a big list namajesty. I need something like that.

I'm curious about what you do with bleach. I use lots of dettol spray to clean surfaces and a special cleaner to polish my granite worktop. I am a bit scared of using bleach anywhere other than the toilet in case it splashes and damages something.

Today I am getting rid of two big glass coffee jars I have been saving for years thinking I might store stuff in them. They were sitting next to yesterday's broken magi mix bowl.

SandandSea I'm so envious. As I said last week I make my house look 'less bad' every day but rarely make it look better.

I forgot to go back upstairs to finish my bathroom yesterday. So when I went to bed I still had a pile of stuff on the bed. Just put it all on the floor and will finish it this afternoon.

Will do a charity shop run tomorrow which will hopefully get rid of the pile of cushions in the hall.

Am in danger of falling back into the mindset of having to do a big sort out so will make sure something random goes out today. I think the decluttering SOMETHING every day will prove mor successful for me. Otherwise I just get back into the whole not knowing where to start scenario again.

Rainbowqueeen · 25/04/2018 12:19

Cider it absolutely works for me.

Yes it is a bit of a scattergun technique the way I do it, as in my bedroom, the kitchen and the garage are all partially done but things are happening. Beat years of things sitting in the same spot not moving.

Hope you made it to the charity shop

SandAndSea · 25/04/2018 13:21

@StealthNinjaMum - I was really blessed to find a good decorator last year (after years of shocking contractors taking the piss). I'm never letting him go! :)

Well, it looks like the EBay seller (re dress number 3) is a scammer. I've opened a dispute. That'll teach me not to buy things I don't need! (Who am I kidding? I've learnt nothing!)

I've written a list of things to sell in an attempt to get down to it. It's quite motivating to think of the money I could make. It's such a hassle though! Just got to get down to it.

My freebay thing is in demand though. I've got someone coming Saturday.

It feels like things are moving here at the moment.

Namajesty · 25/04/2018 15:53

Stealth flash (I think) do a bleach spray. It comes out kind of foamy so you can see exactly where it is you've sprayed it. I use that on the sink and kitchen sides. The sides are white so would look grubby overtime if I just used a disinfectant, I need something to keep the lightness. The bleach spray is less concentrated and I haven't had any issues with it marking tea towels or anything else that is has come into contact with.

Dettol will be fine for most things but I use bleach for sinks, drains, toilets and the outside bins. I probably use a lot more than any average person would too so please don't think you're doing it wrong. I am just OTT Grin

Last night I sorted through some of endless pile of cardboard and put it in the outside bins (they were emptied last week so I should have done this days ago!)

Today I took 4 parcels to be sent off (sold on eBay).

Will list more things to sell later on.

Going to clear out and re organise the recycling cupboard as it gets filled with odd bits and bobs. I don't know how as I never consciously put things in there!!

LostMyBaubles · 25/04/2018 16:02

Namestay youve been very busy!

Ive just recently (about a year ago) started using bleach to clean things.

No one ever told me about it.
Ever.
Obv in loo etc

Will pop some zoflora and anti bac in spray bottle for sofas! Sounds fab idea

StealthNinjaMum · 25/04/2018 18:01

Ha I feel stupid now, I have some Flash bleach spray that I use in the bathroom to get rid of mould it doesn't work so I do sometimes use bleach but I wouldn't think to use it in the kitchen. I have never ever cleaned my sofas (other than a quick hoover under and around the cushions) - am I the only one?

OP posts:
SandAndSea · 25/04/2018 18:20

@StealthNinjaMum - Sorry to tell you that I actually took all my sofa covers off last year and washed them. It felt great! Grin

I'm not into bleach though. I'm more of a vinegar person.

LostMyBaubles · 25/04/2018 18:37

Stealth ive never done it either lol
I have mixed a batch of anti bac/ zoflora up as it cant do any harm?

Hmmm taking covers off to wash is all fine and dandy its putting them back on that's hard!

We have part fabric part pvc sofas ( nicer irl) and i do wipe the pvc down time to time.
I wanted leather so it could be cleaned properly

I was inspired to bleach the kitchen. So its all nice and sparkly atm 😁

Namajesty · 25/04/2018 19:14

My sofas are fabric so easy to strips the covers off and machine wash. In-between washes I mix disinfectant (dettol) and fabric softener with some water into a spray bottle and spray that onto the sofa, carpets and curtains. It makes the rooms smell lovely.

Lost there's something about bleach that other cleaning products can't match Grin the shiny newness of it all. And it makes everything look so bright and fresh. I love it

LostMyBaubles · 25/04/2018 19:53

Ive just mixed anti bac spray and zoflora. Im sure it wont stain my dark sofas 🤔

For me its the smell. I love the smell of bleach. So nice and clean 😍

ememem84 · 26/04/2018 14:05

Cardboard recycling gone. Woohoo!

SandAndSea · 26/04/2018 14:37

I've just set up an online grocery delivery. Not only will it mean me not having to enter the supermarket (horrors!) but I'm hoping to cut DP's spontaneous purchases - good for clutter clearing and saving money.

Namajesty · 26/04/2018 15:14

Emem you've inspired me to try to squeeze more cardboard into the recycling bin.

Sand I wish I could do one shop and have it delivered weekly but I buy my weekly food (and cleaning and toiletries and laundry) shop in 29716383 different places! Everywhere do different things and one shop don't do X item that I need so I end up traipsing round all the shops to get a completed shopping listBlush

StealthNinjaMum · 26/04/2018 15:20

I have advertised some rubbish (literally) on free cycle and received interest but nothing has actually gone yet.I found it while looking for sandpaper to sand down my bannisters which I might paint next week. I said ages ago (possibly on the previous thread) I hate painting and so it might take me a few months to do it.

My main declutter doesn't really count. Last week I bought some sandals online and they have been taking space on my table ever since. Today I went to the post office to get rid of them. I also naughtily bought an expensive casual dress and I'm already wondering if I should take it back!

So nothing has really left the house yet today but I need to pick up the children so I guess I'll look for something when they go to bed.

IHateToCashew · 26/04/2018 16:18

Cleared the fridge of Christmas cheese today. Got rid of about twenty things from the cupboards, and just ditched two old candles that don't smell anymore. Wanted on of the nice Aldi ones to replace it Angry but found it's closed for six weeks for a refurb.

Waiting on a friend from work to collect the Johnson's stuff for their baby.

Does anyone know where I could get rid of a load of size two nappies? I listed them for free on gumtree and free cycle a few days ago but no takers.

IHateToCashew · 26/04/2018 16:23

Oh. And I'm counting my vaginal declutter. My smear has set off a proper 19 weeks worth of period. Grin it also means I'm working through all my odd bits of sanitary products at a nice rate.

CiderwithBuda · 26/04/2018 16:50

Grin Cashew. Every little helps!

Haven’t done charity shop run yet but I have finished toiletries. I have a box of travel sized ones sorted out and a basket of random stuff to use up.

Recycling and bin ready to go out later.

I think I’ve bought more than I got rid of this week though. Have ordered two summer dresses. And popped into Asda this morning and bought a couple of tshirts and a pair of pjs and a bra. And a pair of shorts to wear as pj shorts.

Also did Sainsbury’s and bought two round metal tables to put on our veranda. To go with the rattan sofa off! Hmm. Phoned them and they will refund the difference.

Need to clear and clean veranda over the weekend as sofa is coming on Tuesday. Then I can hopefully declare the Gin and Tonic Terrace open for the season! I even bought a sign that says “Gin Den”.

DH seems to have decluttered himself. He appears to have booked a flight to Croatia on Monday but hasn’t put a return in the calendar. Hmm Hmm

SandAndSea · 26/04/2018 17:00

Have decided to de-clutter an old t-shirt today. I use it for decorating but I found myself thinking about it and realising it brings me down, so it's going. Another t-shirt has gone to DP. And, I've advertised another item for sale.

AdaColeman · 26/04/2018 17:26

I've got a new hobby now, it's shredding.

I know, I know, in true MN style I should have kept the hobby secret, in case it is outing, but I like to live dangerously!! Grin

IHateToCashew · 26/04/2018 17:30

I'm sure if you report your post MNHQ will edit it for you Ada Wink then you can become one of those elite mumsnetters with a secret hobby.

And it does Cider Grin and it's using up the odd painkillers from the drawer. Oh what a marvellous day!

CiderwithBuda · 26/04/2018 17:39

I should have proof read my post!

Ordered a garden sofa from JL. Today I got an email, from them saying there was 20% off selected garden furniture. So I phoned and they will refund the difference.

Otherwise my post made less sense than I normally do!

CiderwithBuda · 26/04/2018 17:40

Actually I found a stash of sanitary stuff too. Haven’t had a period for 7 years.

LostMyBaubles · 26/04/2018 17:48

Ah you've all been busy

Ive sone nothing at all
Well nothing to do declutterimg lol

Been at hosp for an appt this morning.

That ran into the afternoon 🤔😐
