Keep on getting rid of one thing a day decluttering challenge!

After a thousand posts our homes are beautiful, decluttered places of harmony and relaxation….. or perhaps not?

We’re still trying to recycle, freecycle, sell our unwanted stuff and most of all clear out our houses, garages and sheds.

It’s easy to get involved, literally get rid of one thing a day and report back for support (and sometimes finger wagging if you’ve ‘accidentally’ bought a load of new clutter!)

Please join us and a warm welcome back to

Talking of sock bags... I actually got rid of mine last week after many years. I was, weirdly, hanging onto quite a few old, odd ones but finally managed to transfer them to my cloths box (for cleaning) and paired the rest. (It works well as a system so long as you don't keep them for years like me.)

Today, the decorator has been going great guns - will be good to tick that huge job off my list by the end of the week.

"The dress" has been posted back. I've had to chase up both the others - will cancel them if they're not delivered soon.

I still have quite a few bits to sell but I did lots of cleaning today instead. Smile

Namajesty · 23/04/2018 21:23

I sorted through recycling and put it all from the cupboard into the outside bins.

I'm going to keep track of the 'ins and outs' of what I throw and buy starting from next month.

namastayinbed · 23/04/2018 21:25

Down to 23 out as DC2 needed new shoes. Still, that works out as one item a day on average this month! 7 more out to go...

ememem84 · 24/04/2018 07:07

Bag of cat litter emptied.

Tomorrow I’m doing a charity shop run. Today I’m sorting stuff. Taking advantage of ds being in nursery and time alone!

PenelopeFlintstone · 24/04/2018 08:18

I haven't had much out the door but I have been painting a room. Almost finished. I'm going to lay the vinyl on Thursday/Friday and then those extra armchairs will be able to be moved in there from the living room. Hooray!!

IHateToCashew · 24/04/2018 09:53

Well, today will end in disaster.

Impromptu ikea trip. Disaster I tell you, disaster!

I'm aiming to just come back with a cot and a mattress, and no other non useful crap.

LostMyBaubles · 24/04/2018 09:56

Won't be doing much today

Feel very weak and light headed.
Keep forgeting im pregnant

IHateToCashew · 24/04/2018 10:13

I remember that feeling Lost Smile definitely take it easy.

LostMyBaubles · 24/04/2018 10:43

Came upstairs to re iron hubbys clothes. He tried to iron them but failed lol

Sorted 2 bags of my clothes I want gone. Hubby will take them tomorrow hopefully
Told myself have half hour then bed.
Half hour is up and im off to bed!

LostMyBaubles · 24/04/2018 10:46

Cashew its like a bee in a bonet. I know ive got allllll this to do. Nesting etc.
I wanna jump in and start washing baby clothes but its sensible to make space and make it all nice, clean and tidy for the clothes.

Once clothes have been sorted the house will look loads better.

Will be getting hubby to paint.

Cot needs a good clean. Not been used in years but always been up in the spare room.

Once that's done then im going to start on toys. 😐

I have 19 weeks (unless things change) so I want it all done in the next 10-15 weeks.
Sounds reasonable I think

Ceinwen2 · 24/04/2018 10:52

Perhaps not quite in tune with the thread, but a technique I was taught, and has worked for me, is to pick up/ put away 6 things every time I see something out of place. This fits well with " while the kettle is boiling, or " while waiting in the telephone queue for some help desk". I have found it remarkably successful in de-cluttering.

StealthNinjaMum · 24/04/2018 12:13

Well done lost I couldn't do anything when I was pregnant other than eat.

Caiwen I agree I have got into the habit of decluttering when I'm doing other things. We don't use our dining room very often but when we do I go through the furniture decluttering. Even a couple of items makes a difference and when I put clothes away I go through wardrobes looking for clothes to chuck out. It is part of my life now.

This morning I have thrown out a broken bowl from my magimix. I bought a replacement about 8 years ago so don't know why I put the broken bowl back on the top shelf. I suspect because I'm short I just didn't notice it up there.

I'll join you! I've got a lift and cupboards full of old baby and children's clothes. 2 years ago I sorted what I wanted to keep out of a few big bags (you know the zipped see through ikea ones) but there's still loads to do. Single mum of 3 with no one to help me so feels like an almost impossible task. I did clear out the garage a couple of weeks ago and 2 bootfulls of stuff went to the tip. I've got some stuff on eBay to sell and need to list more but wonder if it's worth it when things sell for so little.

PurpleFrog · 24/04/2018 12:58

Everyone is doing really well!

In the past week I have...

Filled the garden waste recycling bin with holly and bramble prunings as they are a pain (literally) to take to the recycling site in bags.

Picked up more leaves and twigs from the "drying green" so the grass can be cut soon.

Actually remembered to take out the dead pot plant that has been sitting wrapped in a plastic bag on our kitchen floor since we sold Mum's house. The remains of the plant went in the garden waste bin, the compost in the garden and the outer decorative ceramic pot has been washed and will probably go in the next Charity box.

Started a new bag of rags for recycling and have put 3 items in it.

Took a binbag half full of the landfill waste from my decluttering efforts over the past few weeks to the recycling site along with the leaves etc..

Listed 3 things on eBay (although one was a re-list so didn't take much effort).

ememem84 · 24/04/2018 15:43

Charity shop stuff is in the car ready to be dropped off tomorrow.

CiderwithBuda · 24/04/2018 16:12

I’m midway through doing my bathroom. I have 21 various sized containers of body lotions/butters/oils!

IHateToCashew · 24/04/2018 16:22

TRIUMPH!

Didn't buy any shite from Ikea. So bought a new cot, mattress and a high chair.

Parents are visiting tomorrow, so I need to have a good tidy up. I'm sure I'll find something to get rid of while I'm doing it.

Clutterfreeintraining · 24/04/2018 17:01

Before I go back and reread the last three pages, anyone know who posted about having a daily cleaning list? I’m wondering if I should try and incorporate similar as I’m finding this method of little and often far more effective and maybe the same could work with cleaning Grin

Namajesty · 24/04/2018 18:33

clutter it was me. I've got a list of 10 things I do each day and my house stays nice and tidy even when I empty the contents of 6 cupboards onto the floor Grin

SandAndSea · 24/04/2018 19:32

My fabulous decorator has exceeded all expectations by finishing early! DP has refitted the light and I've already taken back the excess paint and got my refund. We've agreed to go to the dump Thursday - you're my witnesses.

I've cancelled 2 of the 3 dresses I bought online and am about to chase up the 3rd one.

I've also just posted something on freebay.

LiteraryDevil · 24/04/2018 20:35

Namajesty please share your list! Single mum of 3, 3 storey house, stuff everywhere!

Gibble1 · 24/04/2018 21:22

I threw away a pair of hokey socks today.

Gibble1 · 24/04/2018 22:33

Hole y not hokey!

Namajesty · 24/04/2018 23:40

You might want to change a few bits to fit your family but this is what I do each day and it keeps the house clean. I spend probably an hour at most actually cleaning and space it throughout the day in three bits.

It is just a cleaning list so it doesn’t include putting toys away/doing laundry/wiping crumbs off the sides/picking up random bits the kids drop ect. I do that as an when it’s needed and get DS to help by putting away his own toys and putting his dishes in the sink.

Morning I will
⁃ Change bedding and make the beds
⁃ Spray dettol antibacterial aerosol on all the handles/taps/switches
⁃ Wipe down the toilet seats and bathroom sinks
⁃ Put some bleach down the loos

Dinner time (while DS naps)
⁃ Vaccum and steam the floors (downstairs only - upstairs is done once a week because nobody has shoes up there)
⁃ Spray soft furnishings with a diluted mix of fabric softener and disinfectant

Evening (when DS is in bed and after we have all eaten)
⁃ Sort through and put the recycling in the cupboard
⁃ Wash, dry and put away pots.
⁃ Bleach the kitchen sides and the kitchen sink.

Best week so far for me because I finally managed to start on my own wardrobe- which usually never gets touched.

I keep opening it to look inside as even though it's not finished it looks so much better already. Paperwork from up in the top is half sorted and lots gone in the fire. No more excess shoes. Several items of clothing binned or gone to the charity shop.

And I cleaned the scuff marks off the back wall with bicarbonate soda on a damp cloth and so it looks lovely and white. I am amazed at the difference it's made to my mood and how much it makes me smile. Inspiration to keep going!
