Hello all and Happy New Year!

A warm welcome to the January Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! Typically there are a lot of new members in January so I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Old members, as you know there have been a few issues with links at times so if there is some chopping and changing over the month with the links then that is why. Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I’m sure lots of you have New Years Resolutions to be organised and to declutter, as I do every year Grin. Be kind to yourselves and careful not to crash and burn!

I am risking making two:-
Go to bed at 11pm unless decent reason why not.
Spend less time on my phone.

Here are the links for Monday 1st Jan. although I am linking these then if you are treating today as a holiday (as much as is possible in real life anyway!) then feel free to take today off.

*
Here is the daily summary for Monday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I’m afraid I start the year confused Blush. I’ve just looked on the Flylady website and the link to the zone and missions is here which indicates we will be in zone 5 which is the living room. I would have thought the month starts in zone 1 but I know this has happened before, I think SC explained? TBH after Xmas I think most living rooms could use a bit of work so it won’t hurt Smile. Apologies if this is confusing.

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

daily focus

missions for the week

Flykids mission

January’s habit is shining your sink.

beginner babysteps.

Happy flying everyone.

Ooo, beautiful baby!!
I know how you feel about the clothes, and her definitely being the last, cag. Our background is that we agreed on two, had two, but in my heart of hearts, I would love a house full. It didn't bother me when DC2 was a baby, she was a bit of a nightmare, it was all a fog and DH got the snip when she was still quite small. But now they are 8 and 6 and the baby stage is getting further behind us, I am really feeling it, especially today as a friend has just announced a third baby due, following on from two other friends having their third children over Christmas. Feeling quite resentful towards DH, even though I shouldn't and should be grateful for the wonderful DC I already have 😔

Anyway, moving on, to dos:
Declutter for 15 mins in zone 1
Wipe around kitchen
Swish and swipe
Washing put away
Rope DH into putting the Christmas stuff in the loft

Ta das:
Beds made
Dishwasher unloaded and reloaded
School run
Shopping done AND put away (this is some sort of miracle for me 😂)

I would be interested in a craft group too, I have tried most things and am currently onto Sewing, DH bought me a new sewing machine for Christmas, I am in love 😍

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 11:05

My youngest is 10 but I STILL love babies and would've had another at drop of a hat(i also love toddlers/children)
So thinks I'm nuts well we all know that
I still have to find a distraught crying young baby in a supermarket if I hear it's crys and whilst I am truly grateful for my zoolets I do feel resentful of do sometimes we didn't have more...

School run was wet n windy.i am now dried out...
Bathroom
Windows wiped
Sill cleaned
Wipe bath n sink
Drawers with zoolets oblusuion stuff in sorted with empty toothpaste tubs n shower gel bottles removed not much let.need to make note and replenish supplies

I plan to seriously sort out the shoe crate/dumping ground.i need zoolets on board there as not sure what they've grown out of so will do that after school

I go try and sort out cupboard combi boiler loves in if I can find the motivation.it has dd2 extensive fabric collection and lots of "stuff" crammed in with the boiler buried under it all!!

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 11:06

That should've red DP thinks I'm nuts and resentful of dp

Afreshnewyearplease · 03/01/2018 11:07

I would like another if it coukd stay under two until i desired it to grow up and get all attitudey

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/01/2018 11:10

I was going to get up at normal back to school time and get on with ds' room but my body over-ruled me and I slept in. I am glad because I seem to be fighting a hot/cold thing and everything hurts. Right now I am trying to figure out if it is a bug or a physiological response to the psychological attitude to dealing with the boy dungeon.

Coffee and breakfast and a slow start will allow some progress if not as much as I would like.

cag she is lovely. Wrt baby clothes I still have a few items hoarded from ds was a baby. Should probably get rid of them but at the moment I just can't right now. Well done on getting so much done and working on figuring out your trigger factor.

bower don't be too impressed with the socks. I started at the toe and because I am using scraps on this pair didn't think i have enough scraps so put in 10 rows of the contrast colour after the toe. I have more than enough yarn and am not lovely the toe so I suspect that I will be doing sock surgery and taking the toes off and re doing that bit. Toes will get reused on a different pair. I am sure i will love the socks after I had done surgery and weaved in all the ends but right now they are annoying me, and I just want to get the scraps used so that I can put the christmas containers away and don't have to worry about losing the order of the scraps. Over thinking - yep

Re PE kit - ds has lost his pe t-shirt which had his NAME embriodered on the front by the School uniform shop. No idea how he has managed it. But it really has gone so will have to get a new one sorted when the shop reopens when they go back. It is always the expensive piece that they lose. Hmm

Honu · 03/01/2018 12:06

Posting twice in a week! Sorry to fill the thread but I need to waste less time scrolling through the thread to find where I had got to.
How can I bookmark my place so I can go straight there? TIA Honu

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/01/2018 12:11

Not sure on a mobile device but I know that on my computer if i hover over the bottom right of a post (in the 'white' space) i get the book mark button appear.

Not sure how it works with iOS systems or the mobile site though. sorry

Wh0KnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 03/01/2018 12:20

On the mobile site touch the three dots on the bottom RHS of a post and the bookmark option should pop up. I think you might have to enable it in Customise first though.

WhispersOfWickedness · 03/01/2018 12:22

If you are on the app on an iPad/iPhone, you swipe left on the message and it will bring up some options, one of which is to bookmark. Not sure if it's the same with other devices.

foxessocks · 03/01/2018 12:33

cag she's so cute!

I am stopping at two - I love babies , I love having little ones but I get terribly sick all the way through pregnancy, the births were fast and I'm scared how fast a third might come! And I don't want the sleepless nights and the mastitis again! Two is right for us but every family is different. I'm so grateful for my two. Grin soppiness over. Dd has changed her mind about her birthday party and now wants a different one which is more expensive - I'm trying to decide whether just to go for it (they're only little once?!) or to put it off a bit longer and see if she changes her mind again. But things will be getting booked up. Decisions.

First though lunch / cuppa.

Ta da
Got fuel
Emptied dishwasher
Took rubbish out
Took junk mail and bag of clothes to charity bins

To do
Everything else

CotswoldStrife · 03/01/2018 12:47

Gorgeous smiley Cagletini!

Have been shopping this morning, just a few bits to make sure that everyone is ready for the two days of work and school that they have this week. Planning to go out this afternoon and do a bit more shopping/strolling round.

DH got a call from one of the local hospitals this morning - he needs a scan - they've come up with a very early appointment this weekend! Did buy a calendar yesterday so will need to update it. Still full of enthusiasm for planning and organising but the month is still in single figures ...

FoolandFitz · 03/01/2018 13:07

Aww@miniaglet. I love babies and baby holding is a lovely therapy that is good for my soul. I only have the one and when he was toddler/pre-schooler I found it really hard and didn't think I could handle any more and then I got too old plus DP already has grown up children - I wish they would hurry up and reproduce but it ain't happening any time soon. Grin and Sad all at the same time.

Ta-da
Bed made
Porch cleaned and de-cluttered. Shoes all lined up.
Coat basket - extra coats, hoodies tidies away
2 loads of washing put away
2 loads washing drying
Bathed (result!)

Porch looks much better but it needs a lick of paint - we've never painted it even though we have been here for 5 years. Also, there's a lot of upvc and I'm not sure what to use to clean it - it's looking rather mucky. Any ideas?

We have a cupboard in the porch but we never use it day to day to store our winter coats as it's freezing and it feels like you're wearing a wet coat when you first put it on. Hence the coat mountain basket in the living room (no hallway). It's the bane of my life.

DS's room was covered in Lego, we couldn't walk in there without stepping on or kicking a build. He's done a really good job of clearing it all. Am really proud of him. Star for him. Just need to dust and hoover. I'll try today or tomorrow to do that.

To-do:
Walk to cobblers to get my boots re-heeled. (Save me £££ having to buy new shoes)
Shoes to be polished.
Dinner.
Swish and swipe.

HillsBesideTheSea · 03/01/2018 13:33

I would probably use something like washing up liquid soapy water, perhaps with a small splash of white vinegar to cut through the grease but I am against the use of anything too chemically/with a strong smell. So this is also what I use to cut through the soap scum on the bath. Micro fibre clothe helps.

Others will have different solutions that might require less of the slight of elbow grease needed for this method. Also if you go down this route test it in an inconspicuous corner to be sure safe. We tend to avoid plastic amap (as much as poss)

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 13:40

Bit CIF /vim and soapy water ?
I would test on patch first..I wipe my pvc door with soapy water to remove cat prints lide(scoutcat jumps at handle and uses weight to open door but back legs drag muddy feet down door).our window cleaner wipes pvc incl in price

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 13:41

I still hunting for my motivation to sort that cupboardSad

FoolandFitz · 03/01/2018 13:47

still can I give you a kick up the bum? Will that help?

HettyB · 03/01/2018 13:56

Cag she’s gorgeous! I know what you mean about difficulty putting away baby clothes. DS (13 weeks) seems to be growing out of things by the day - he’s already in 3-6m and outgrowing some of that! I really need to sort through all our baby things and work out what I want to save and what can go to charity/rag bag if too worn/stained.
Off to town later so will see if I can get some clear storage tubs to store the baby clothes - we might have another at some point but not for at least 2.5 years (24m between these two and it is hard!). At the moment the baby clothes are in the garage but things in there seem to be getting damp so I want to bring them into the house to store.

FlyingJellyfishInTheAttic · 03/01/2018 13:57

Waves to SC

Thanks Stressy was pleased I achieved so much.

Does anyone has new year resolutions?

foxessocks · 03/01/2018 14:06

flying I have lots of random half formed resolutions in my head! I'm saving money, less time on my phone, exercise, some I've started some I'm still thinking about ! There are others too but as I say they are just in my head rough ideas of things I wanted to change. I should probably write them down to make sure I do them!

I've done my list apart from packaging up the present as dh is hopefully bringing me a box home from work and the party because we are back to square one. I did email one venue though to make an enquiry.

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 14:11

Well done foxes
F+f tread felt on my arse I now spurred to climb stairs n get cupboard tidy(it's overflowing onto the girls bedroom floor)

FoolandFitz · 03/01/2018 14:59

flying here are mine:

  • Move more. Go for a walk no matter what the weather (except icy on ground cos I really don't want to injure myself) and no matter how tired.
  • Wash up after dinner snack plates, cups, bowls
  • Take my iron everyday
  • Take Vitamin D everyday
  • in bed by 10.30 pm
  • 1 hour of evening TV viewing

Very specific. I have just finished reading Better than Before by Gretchen Rubin about habits. £1.99 on Kindle. There's a few things in the book that I found profound/inspiring/lightbulb moments and hopefully these resolutions will end up being habits such as brushing teeth etc.

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 15:55

Flying, I have two resolutions:-
Spend less time on phone
Go to bed by 11pm unless acceptable reason why not.

Work was fine today, DDs now bathed and in PJs and watching telly. Plus we have a new laptop computer. Super excited as with a functioning computer and laptop it will be great (our old tech was so bad that I had to write essays and presentations on my phone rather than the computer when I did a degree module) Smile.
