Hello all and Happy New Year!

A warm welcome to the January Flylady thread. This is a lovely friendly thread where we loosely follow the Flylady system (see the Flylady website) in the hope of having organised homes and lives.

Every day the thread leader (me this month) posts links and missions from the Flylady site and also some friendly (!) personal comments. This is quite a ‘talky’ thread but we try our hardest not to be cliquey and new members are very welcome! Typically there are a lot of new members in January so I will do my best to keep track of everybody Smile.

Old members, as you know there have been a few issues with links at times so if there is some chopping and changing over the month with the links then that is why. Please note that Flylady is (understandably) keen for people to click on her site so please do have a look around the site and the links.

On the website there is information for beginners. You can also sign up to the Flylady emails but we would advise caution as there are hundreds of them.

We post our achievements (ta das) and our to do lists and any other general chatter about life / flying.

Information on getting started: www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/

The launch pad is also a good starting place:www.flylady.net/c/lp.php

Fly stands for Finally Loving Yourself. The general idea is that short bursts of tidying / organisation are more achievable than marathon efforts. Flylady advises 15 minute bursts is effort but you can tweak this to fit your own circumstances.

I’m sure lots of you have New Years Resolutions to be organised and to declutter, as I do every year Grin. Be kind to yourselves and careful not to crash and burn!

I am risking making two:-
Go to bed at 11pm unless decent reason why not.
Spend less time on my phone.

Here are the links for Monday 1st Jan. although I am linking these then if you are treating today as a holiday (as much as is possible in real life anyway!) then feel free to take today off.

*
Here is the daily summary for Monday (also available on the Flylady website at flight plan which should update automatically each day).

I’m afraid I start the year confused Blush. I’ve just looked on the Flylady website and the link to the zone and missions is here which indicates we will be in zone 5 which is the living room. I would have thought the month starts in zone 1 but I know this has happened before, I think SC explained? TBH after Xmas I think most living rooms could use a bit of work so it won’t hurt Smile. Apologies if this is confusing.

Re. zones, do what works for you. I don’t always stick to the zones myself and do what works best at the time, with varying degrees of success!

Spend 15 mins decluttering, or whatever you can manage, in Zone 5.

When you have finished decluttering, the detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 5 is here.

January’s habit is shining your sink.

Happy flying everyone.

I thought the gale force wind was the result of all the flapping fledglings? But you're saying it's weather? Hmm

Would love a craft thread. I took up a craft last year (crochet) and really enjoy it.

We have another day before school here so I am still washing coats, etc. Was out for a fair bit of the day but have done some laundry and washing up. Dinner tonight was a bit of a fridge clearance job but I think sausages and chicken worked better than you'd think. No, really.

Cagliostro · 02/01/2018 23:46

Couldn’t agree more re perfectionism. Tonight for example I felt rubbish due to how little I’d managed (even messaged DH about it) and felt like why bother sorting any of it if it’s still going to be a mess. So wouldn’t have done anything. But having got better at ditching the perfectionism I just did a few bits while I had the chance (DD1 holding baby) and threw a few things away and put a wash on. Still a mess but a slightly less messy mess.

I hear you on the self care struggles too. Just... nope. So hard.

ta da
✅wool wash and laid out wet stuff
✅normal wash on
✅read (did this yesterday too, trying to make myself a little each day)
✅organised things with family and friends
✅made myself eat a decent lunch (smoked salmon was involved yum)
✅Caglets bath
✅brought Cagletini up to bed at a reasonable time. Not asleep yet but hey ho it’s still progress.

Longtime · 03/01/2018 00:57

Thank you for the kind words and Flowers. Kitchen a mess. It’s late as I’ve been doing the end of year books but need to get to bed. Will be back next week as I can’t keep up this week.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 03/01/2018 05:37

Hetty, Hills and Cag are right about not being behind / not being too perfectionist. I remind myself of this frequently Grin.

longtime Flowers. Glad you are feeling a bit better Wh0knows (also realise I may have spelt your name wrong many times with the ‘0’ and ‘o’, sorry!). Have also been washing coats here Cotswold.

Big wing flaps to all. I’m off to work today so need to get up in a few mins. Will check in later.

Morning Brew

Up at 6 with ds. Left dd in my bed not sure when she appeared.

My ankle is sore and swollen this morning just what i need when back on school run

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 06:29

Can you bandage it afresh for support and to stop it swelling more now you are up in it ?

Subtleconstraints · 03/01/2018 06:48

Frozen peas in a towel Afresh if you have them

DH assessing travel situation.

Afreshnewyearplease · 03/01/2018 06:52

Tbh seems more i walk on it the better it is!

Callmecordelia · 03/01/2018 06:55

Afresh is there a minor injury unit near you? Ours is great for this sort of thing. Might be good to get it checked if it's still painful.

Ta das from yesterday
Appointments booked
IFA emailed
Three loads of washing done
Some decorations down
Sorted PE kit

I didn't get much further because I got distracted and then obsessed by a Smell (capital definitely justified) in the fridge. I went through everything and removed anything it could be. Still there. Then I removed all the shelves, washed the walls, washed the shelves. Still a pong. DH came home. By this point I was over sensitised, and merely opening the fridge door made me gag, so he then went through everything that was left. He ate some smelly brie, just in case that was the source. We threw out all the dips. We put a dish of bicarb in there. We triple checked, but now everything is in sealed packets and yet it still whiffs.

If there was a tearing my hair out emoticon, I'd use it.

Anyway, updated to do list -

Make up approximate dates and pages for the many books DD has read in the holidays and write them in her reading record. I got told off for lack of detail last term. Oops.
Clean bathrooms
Clean kitchen
Wash kitchen floor

Will dust and vacuum tomorrow when DH is here and he's helped me take down the decorations.

Stilllivinginazoo · 03/01/2018 07:04

foxessocks · 03/01/2018 07:22

Ds driving me round the bend! He was up at 4.30 but rubbing his eyes, yawning etc so put him in our bed. He slept a bit but kept hitting me in the face and grumbling in his sleep so I didn't sleep. Then he started crying at 5.30 so I was mean and put him back in his bed as he was still rubbing his eyes. He whinged for ages and shouted so dh made me a coffee when he got up at 6 and then ds promptly fell asleep. I drank my coffee expecting him to wake back up. I decided to get some more sleep at 6.30 only for ds to wake me up at 7. Made a cup of tea before I went into him, only to discover he has bloody well gone back to sleep!!!! My conclusion is this - he will only sleep if he knows I am awake!

Not good about your ankle afresh hope you're ok and school run not too bad.

Going to have a read through missions etc and make my to do list.

foxessocks · 03/01/2018 07:34

Get fuel
Buy ibuprofen
Swish and swipe bathroom
Daily routine
Take clothes / junk mail from porch to charity bins
Package up a final Christmas present that is cluttering up my dining area ready to post it.
Anti procrastination - book / sort dd birthday party / activities

Cagliostro · 03/01/2018 09:28

Morning! I slept much later this morning as Cagletini settled better. I am going to get up but first in the interest of not being a perfectionist Hmm I am finally going to sort through some of her clothes again. I was being really good at just putting away the odd outgrown thing without getting hung up on what age it was... until this time when I am switching from the bigger newborn/up to 1 month stuff, and the 0-3 month stuff. I am getting all anxious about how much to put away (isn’t that ridiculous? It’s sodding baby clothes, why does it matter?! I hate my brain) but I’m just going to go through NOW and at least pull out stuff that I know is unusable. The clothes box is overflowing. I can also put away the outerwear that is outgrown as I washed it the other day.

I hate my brain. This shouldn’t be such a big deal! But oh well. I must simply be proud that I am tackling it, right?

Not sure what else will get done today, we have family coming for lunch so hopefully will get tidying done before that.

Cagliostro · 03/01/2018 09:33

Aargh this is difficult. Some of the reason it’s difficult is the guilt over whether Cagletini has worn something ‘enough’ - I really need to get over this. Not least because if I get hung up on it too long it’ll mean she doesn’t get to wear her bigger stuff much either!

Some of it was presents hence more guilt. But also stuff I bought because I liked it. I had already realised I overbought though and I’m finding it easier not to buy so much now.

Sorry for the nonsensical ramblings of a tired crazy lady. Photo added to shame myself into action!

New year, new organisation! Fledglings fly in 2018.
Afreshnewyearplease · 03/01/2018 09:41

Maybe, just think of saving it for the next baby Grin

Cagliostro · 03/01/2018 09:42

HAHAHAHAHA

No.

:o

Afreshnewyearplease · 03/01/2018 09:50

Maybe...

Callmecordelia · 03/01/2018 09:56

Smell mystery solved.

It looks like when we were squeezing all the Christmas food in there the dial got knocked and it was at its warmest setting. Turned it down and smell disappearing. More food being chucked which feels annoying and wasteful but I'd rather not risk the paté.

Cagliostro · 03/01/2018 10:05

Right I’m done. I had a separate pile of smaller stuff that I was going to try her with. But I’ve decided against it and have now got rid of anything below 0-3m size as it was stressing me out too much. Confused I have now put all 0-3m in the box, even the bigger stuff (why is there such variation?) as she will grow into it soon enough the rate she’s going! Little chubster she is :)

So, a big Boots bag of clothes GONE plus a few bits with little stains that I’ll chuck away. I forgot to take an After photo.

In all serious there really can’t be any more, I think that’s what I’m struggling with. I never had this issue when DS was a baby - he wasn’t planned to be our last, as that happened later when DH got injured, lost his job, I got very ill blah blah blah. Whereas this time we know NOW if that makes sense. So I’m very aware how fast she’s growing.

I really can’t do this again though, the anxiety has floored me :( and the birth in particular will take a long time to really get over. So I’m done. DH will be snipped at some point :o so I’m just going to enjoy having her as she is perfect :) (photo for proof :o)
