Who's up for a summer holiday house sort out?

Snap8TheCat · 20/07/2017 13:34

As usual my house needs a good declutter and clean Grin

I am a childminder by day and so will be out and about a fair bit but can also fit in some house chores whilst they are nicely amused and encourage them to help me with things like sorting the playrooms out.

The summer holidays and starting the new school year off with a fresh start seems like a good idea.

Would anyone like to join me?

Smile

I'm looking forward to getting matching crockery once we've moved (and can afford it after furnishing the house, so may take a while) - we've never had matching stuff, always a mishmash of charity shop/hand me down plates etc

Thank you Ms I'll definitely investigate the bags then :)

Giraffe that's great cupboard decluttering! I wonder what it says about me though that I really didn't think your before photo was that bad... Blush

Not expecting to get anything done today as up early with anxiety issues, DH is going back to work after time off and I'm so tired! May just write some lists.

cikecaka · 23/07/2017 05:18

Oh, I am in! Suffer with depression, so housekeeping hasnt been my best effort! Get oerwhelmed by it and then just lie back down!

Need to start with my room, fingers crossed, will get started this aft

HollyBollyBooBoo · 23/07/2017 05:24

I'm in! We started in DDs room yesterday, got rid of loads of stuff, mostly rubbish, some for charity shop. It felt SO good!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 23/07/2017 07:40

Morning everyone. Went through all the toys in the living room so they are now organised and got rid of a few carrier bags worth of stuff for charity and chucked some broken bits. They won't stay organised once they get played with again but that's ok as at least I know what we have now.

Need to do lego but always struggle with this one. DD1 likes to keep her creations all made up and likes to keep individual sets together so the usual tips of storing by colour or just chucking in one big box don't work Confused.

Today's plan is the free toys and little trinket boxes the girls have got from comics - hardly ever used yet I keep them all as I think they might be useful for little bits.

Lostmyemailaddress · 23/07/2017 07:51

Would it be ok to join in? I need to declutter and organise so I can finish off the decorating I started while pregnant and get things easier to run.

I gave birth a week ago tomorrow so still getting dd3 into some sort of routine i have almost all the 6 older kids organised number 6 is only 2 so he's still learning.
But I need to sort through all toys and clothes and storage cupboards and if anyone one has any storage ideas that might help I would honestly love you forever. Some rooms are small and we can't hold in way of storage but 7 kids seem to accumulate a lot of stuff.

Notinyournelly · 23/07/2017 09:08

Gosh lost you have your hands full. Cikecaka keep doing little bits as you can and post on here for encouragement. The state of upstairs in my house really is getting me down, I know I'll feel so much better when I get it done.
I hope everyone is feeling motivated today 😉 I'm going to try and do some of one bedroom today. I got sidetracked yesterday cleaning the carpet it took hours. I have a few hours till my messy kids come home.
You know those little square puzzles when you shift pieces around to make the picture. That's what my house feels like. I emptied half the hallway yesterday, but it will get filled again when I tackle another room 😕

Cagliostro · 23/07/2017 09:29

Yes totally agree it feels like that! I really like what I read on a similar thread (at least I think it was another thread rather than this one, there have been a few lately):

Blitzing is only fun if your house is already sorted 'underneath'. Otherwise you end up just moving stuff around.

Awholenewstart · 23/07/2017 09:33

Oh goodness I'm in. House and garden to do here...
Away for a week now but will catch up and report when back. I think every drawer/cupaboard and shelf needs doing here - mammoth task

Cagliostro · 23/07/2017 10:40

I have ordered storage boxes! We are going to start packing away some board games (they are my obsession so we have a terrifying amount still not enough though :o) so we can clear out the unit they are currently in all higgledy piggledy. That piece of furniture won't last a move so once we are in the new place we will get a Kallax. Also might pack up some books but those need a lot more sorting.

Lostmyemailaddress · 23/07/2017 10:51

Well we have 3 kids and myself dressed a shop delivered and put away. The books the older ones came home with last week has been sorted through so 1st year ones go in memory box and others recycling and I've emptied my junk drawer and started sifting through everything in that.
I have 2 tiny rooms 1 in the kitchen which I think was an old coal shed that I hide things like my Hoover and mop bucket in and 1 in my living room which we are using for a toy room which basically means everything stuffed in boxes and dumped in.

I really need to find a way to utilise the spaces more.

Cagliostro · 23/07/2017 15:12

Your house sounds intriguing with these extra tiny rooms! :) My house is so boring. :o

Despite lack of energy I actually managed to gather a couple of shopping bags' worth of stuff to chuck. DCs are watching a film so I might start a list.

Cagliostro · 23/07/2017 15:15

It's sad how quickly I could gather enough stuff to fill a bag though. And it shows how bad things are that it's made no difference whatsoever to the overall state of the place. Sigh.

But we must all stay positive and remember that every piece of crap out of the house IS an improvement.

Notinyournelly · 23/07/2017 15:54

👍🏻👍🏻

drinkswineoutofamug · 23/07/2017 17:01

I now have an organised airing cupboard . All bedding matched up
And inside pillow cases. Bedding that doesn't even fit our beds, gone.
I've got another charity pile growing again!

CocoLoco87 · 23/07/2017 18:33

Me and DH are doing the Konmari Method of decluttering at home and I can honestly say it's already changed our lives! The clothes in DC's drawers are all folded and arranged vertically and it's lovely!

Loads of stuff taken to charity shops and yesterday we took a massive suitcase which was a bit battered, filled it with things that don't bring us 'joy' anymore and wheeled the suitcase to the charity shop! It made for great transportation and then we left it there.

I don't think I'm ever going to thank my socks for a job well done, but she does have some great tips!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 23/07/2017 19:07

Tonight's job is lego ConfusedWine. Not sure what to do with it so will be googling some ideas.

Managed to get rid of a few little toys today - general tat that needed to go.

Cagliostro · 23/07/2017 19:09

I liked the KM book. I have not been able to do the big, categorised declutter (mainly health reasons) but it has still had a profound impact on me. I am able to let go of things now. I can remind myself that something has served its purpose, even if it hasn't ended up being used as much as I thought, or if something was a gift long ago I can say that getting rid of the item doesn't change how happy I was to receive it. The latter has been particularly useful for DH who wants to keep every single thing I've ever given him even if it's falling apart! Even he has been convinced.

Snap8TheCat · 23/07/2017 20:34

Ok well this is my list. As I said it's in priority order so I am just going to go through it for top to bottom.

Cagliostro I would take pics and post of the small rooms but they are a mess lol.

I didn't get much more done then the junk drawer today as dd3 has been cluster feeding but the plan for tomorrow is writing a chore list for kids out with a price list so they can earn extra pocket money and a meal plan.
I'm also going to sort through the kids clothes and sort what can be passed on to someone or used for cleaning rags.

My backroom cupboard is also on the list to sort out and maybe hunting for my pre pregnancy clothes so I can start to sort through mine.

randomsabreuse · 23/07/2017 20:59

I need to finish the tidying/decluttering process. Much better than I was - Kondo really helped me to realise that space and time have a value too and keeping random crap in case I need it was a false economy because I could probably buy the thing again in less time than it would take to find it in all the other "in case" junk!

Paperwork is a bit of a nightmare - my shredder is working overtime! Finally letting go of credit card statements from when I was 18!

Kitchen better but room for improvement.

spiderbabymum · 23/07/2017 21:51

Hello to all

Some amazing work going on nationwide

Congrats to all who have made a start

Now the January cure 2017 begins tomorrow

It's rather Americanised but it gives a simple framework to base your decluttering on if u need one

In my experience it's brilliant if you want to do an hour a day Monday to Friday with a bigger challenge at the weekend

Here is the first assignment

www.apartmenttherapy.com/january-cure-2017-assignment-1-240063

So for those who expressed an interest tomorrow we make a start

There are some links if u scroll down if u want to see more if what the cure involves

I'm in ! And plan to post the assignments daily .... usually in the early morning .

A word of warning !
This weekends assignment is a monster one : its to clean the floors . That's right all off them ! It seems like the Wrong place to start doesn't it ..... but it gets the cure off to a great start

And if you can't see the floors start clearing ! Get the black sacks out this week to make a head start

Good luck

Thanks fir the inspiring photos so far

MsAwesomeDragon · 23/07/2017 23:19

I haven't done much again today, as dd2 demanded to go out, and that's much more enjoyable than decluttering. Plus our bin is full already (having only been emptied on Tuesday) because I made dd1 remove all rubbish from her room (that's right, just the rubbish from dd1's room has filled almost the entire wheely bin, and she hasn't even sorted anything yet).

My list, in the order I'll be tackling it:
The hallway - sort shoes
- sort coats
- sort bags in the "dumping box"
- get rid of the "dumping box" and replace with shelves
- understairs cupboard
Bathroom - toiletries
- bath toys
- thorough clean
- paint

Once I've done those 2 areas I'll think about the rest. Those are the easiest places to make a difference I think. So by this time next week I hope to have finished that list, but if I haven't I won't be beating myself up about it. I might even post before and after pictures of each task (but I might not because some areas are just too embarrassing)

Cagliostro · 24/07/2017 07:09

Great lists there. It's definitely better to break it down into small tasks IME. I sometimes struggle with that bit - I wrote a list yesterday but it was very odd and in no way covers everything, but I'm hoping it at least gives us some useful starting points alongside generally continuing to get rid of stuff.

I am jealous of those with a junk drawer. A drawer?! My whole house is basically a junk drawer!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 24/07/2017 08:12

Morning all, did lego last night. Not perfect but I think something like that will always be a work in progress.

spider, have done one drawer this morning but I admit I picked a really easy one Blush. Did one in DD1's room and found a couple of too-small tops that can go to DD1 and then hopefully I can declutter a couple of her too-small tops.

Today's job probably now needs to be to start in the wardrobe in our bedroom which is a disaster zone.

MaisyPops · 24/07/2017 08:17

My plan is to do a room or 2 a day because I'm on summer holidays.

Today I'm going to do the bathroom and ensuite.

I've started clearing clothes but that's a work in progress.

Then the living room, then the kitchen/diner then our bedroom and then the other bedrooms.

DH can do the study because it's mainly his stuff in there.
