Who's up for a summer holiday house sort out?

Snap8TheCat · 20/07/2017 13:34

As usual my house needs a good declutter and clean Grin

I am a childminder by day and so will be out and about a fair bit but can also fit in some house chores whilst they are nicely amused and encourage them to help me with things like sorting the playrooms out.

The summer holidays and starting the new school year off with a fresh start seems like a good idea.

Would anyone like to join me?

Hey Snap , I'm more into plodding along in my own furrow, according to my own list. I've woken up, it's the first day of the holidays (teacher here), and I am quite excited about getting on with it for the next five weeks. Think I might start with writing a list Grin
Yes, what is everyone doing about stuff that is of sentimental value to the DCs? It's everywhere and has some weird kind of protected status around here...

sandgrown · 22/07/2017 08:25

Snap. I am.open to any ideas. Nothing too structured just ideas and motivation!

Snap8TheCat · 22/07/2017 08:36

Without being negative, I don't want to do anything prescriptive. My life is busy and unpredictable in terms of when I can find time to do stuff.

I never keep to these set ideas with links and end up falling off the wagon and feeling like I've failed.

The place ends up worse because I'm not tackling the things that actually need doing in my house and instead do jobs that I had even considered needed doing!

Completely no offence to those who would prefer to follow that kind of regime but it's not for me and I was hoping just to clear out and clean and chat to others in the same boat. Plod along in our in little ways and motivate and share successes and failures.

As I said I have a list of all the areas that need sorting and just want to work through it from top to hopefully bottom. They are the priorities of my home and my family and will set us up for a new and more organised school year.

Good luck everyone.

You ladies have inspired me to get off my butt and put some old baby bits up for sale instead of cluttering up the spare room!

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 22/07/2017 09:08

I'm happy to do a combination of both. Sometimes I find a list of tasks helpful (like apartment therapy style stuff) because they make it seem a bit more 'fun'. However, totally agree Snap that they can distract me from stuff that actually needs doing. I try to follow Flylady as well but only follow that loosely and usually ignore the missions set in that unless they suit what I am trying to declutter / organise at the time.

So I think I'll try to do a combination of all three. We can still all plod along together Smile.

So far done nothing today if that makes anyone feel better Grin.

NotLachsAgainMother · 22/07/2017 09:30

snap don't flounce! I'm not planning on following any 'rules' or anything. Just having a big clearout and tidy.

Giraffeski · 22/07/2017 09:33

I'll join you- we have sold our house and I honk we will complete in September so need to have a thorough declutter so we don't pay movers to move junk!
I'm aiming for at least one cupboard or drawer per day, yesterday I did my makeup drawer and top bedside drawer (aka the Drawer of Shame) and chucked loads.

NotLachsAgainMother · 22/07/2017 09:41

Ooh yes I did my Drawer of Shame last weekend. Feels so much nicer to go to bed with everything around you nice and tidy.

Giraffeski · 22/07/2017 09:43

Today I am planning to do the cupboard in the dining room dresser. It has been long overdue for a clear out, but need to find some way of organising it as it seems to be just stuff stuffed in willy nilly. I may post a picture if I can get over the shame!
Also need to sort out kitchen cupboards and clean them out to make the cleaning job a bit easier when we move.

spiderbabymum · 22/07/2017 09:43

Hi again

Agree that doing a prescriptive regime is not for everyone

But there are pros and cons to every system suggested above

My sole aim is to share a one month system that I did in 2015 and it really helped me see my home differently
..... just sharing the love

I'm really excited by the idea of motivating by one another and encouraging one another and being positive

?? Anyone in the Glasgow area ???
apologies for hijacking the thread

But happy to be part of this group

Giraffeski · 22/07/2017 09:44

This is what we're dealing with folks

Who's up for a summer holiday house sort out?
NoSquirrels · 22/07/2017 09:45

Let's do both! Someone can post the links & people can follow if it suits, and others can plod on with their lists/tasks as suits. I'm going to post my Big List and cross stuff off as it gets done so hopefully by September I'll have a record of achievements!

We're on holiday for best part of 2 weeks anyway, so the Cure month/daily stuff would get derailed for me anyway. But it does have useful tips so I'm happy to see the suggestions-even if I ignore them-

MaisyPops · 22/07/2017 09:46

I'm up for this. I've send 3 bags of stuff to the charity shop (well in the boot of my car ready for the charity shop) so far.

My problem is keeping things "just in case". It leads me to have loads of stuff whilst feeling I have nothing useful. I'm trying to get to a point where I can just easily locate useful things.

NoSquirrels · 22/07/2017 09:47

Yikes Giraffe! Good luck Grin

spiderbabymum · 22/07/2017 09:49

Giraffe !
Thats a fairly stuffed cupboard

Giraffeski · 22/07/2017 09:53

I don't really know where to start with it to be honest.
I will be attempting it later tonight after kids in bed as i'm off to my mums for the day

Notinyournelly · 22/07/2017 09:57

Hi everyone I'd like to join in.
I'm going to do my bathroom shortly then the hallway and stairs. So I'm starting with easy things and stuff I can finish in a day.
I'll try a drawer or a cupboard if I have time.
Good luck everyone.

spiderbabymum · 22/07/2017 10:05

Griaffe
That looks like the perfect challenge to start with

I'm a fan of using the big plastic tubs ...... to help sort stuff

Start with emptying everything out

If there's a lot of junk can use the three box thing : bin , charity shop , put away

drinkswineoutofamug · 22/07/2017 10:17

Morning, for those of you doing your kitchen.
I emptied my cupboards gave them a scrub. Then got it down to the stuff I actually use. The rest went for charity. I filled 2 boxes full of xmas serving plates, glass bowls ( odd) wine glasses (odd) I had a new box of wine glasses. Baking trays, a George Forman ( never used) ironing board and iron . Replaced all my plates and bowls to a matching set and got rid of the odd stuff. It felt so much better as I had just redecorated the kitchen

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 22/07/2017 10:28

drinks, great tips, thank you? Anything for kids' bedrooms and toys please anyone? DDs seem to be (amazingly) in a mood to let go of stuff as have already decluttered a toy tea set so want to make progress.

Notinyournelly · 22/07/2017 10:42

With Kids rooms it's easier when they are not there.
But maybe a box of "play one day toys." The one you would throw but they can't bare to say goodbye. Then when some time has passed and they have forgot about it then it can go. ?

Notinyournelly · 22/07/2017 10:45

Don't you hate it when its sunny outside but the forecast is raining later. And you want to hang out washing 😌.
Do I or don't I ?

drinkswineoutofamug · 22/07/2017 11:11

I have

drinkswineoutofamug · 22/07/2017 11:15

Toostressy my kids are adults now but when they were younger , started with clothes. Bag up the stuff that they have grown out off.
Toys aged related. What do they play with, broken toys , missing parts. If they haven't played with it in 3 months, will they miss it? Has that jigsaw got all its pieces? Box or bag it. Start making a pile up. I don't drive so phoned my local ymca , told them what I had and arranged a pick up date.

Mendeleyev · 22/07/2017 11:18

I really want to get decluttered but I live with untidy hoarders. Made a start on DD1's room yesterday, spurred on by PILs announcing that they were going to come and stop for the weekend. DD's room is where we put people up as it has a double bed, but it is a shit tip. I only sorted it at Easter. I may have had a big rant at her about it. Not helped by PMT and the fact that I don't like them and MIL is forever slagging people off about the state of their houses. Anyway, removed tonnes of rubbish from her room, it there wasn't actually much else to get rid of as it had been done recently. But she needs better furniture in there with storage.
