We've had a new mattress, so decided to clear everything off our ottoman. Our bed & Ottoman very rarely looks this tidy. Does this look dated?

@Tortephant Why colour? The op clearly struggles with colour and design. Just swapping red for another colour is not sensible really. Nor dark blue walls - guaranteed to date! It’s so much easier to go with neutrals and white and use textures like whicker. Large lamps with textural shades and a chair to add a cody corner would really help. Mirrors also are useful. There isn’t much to be done with the bed: just hide it.

That's exactly what I meant. I never said paint a wall. She needs colour, pattern, texture eg rug, lamps and so on.

There's nothing wrong with red. But it needs to be the right red and used in the right way. This has some good images.

Yes, I think the style of furniture, the duvet cover pattern, the throw cushions…. But just because it looks dated doesn’t mean you have to change it…

Sheepsmellnice · 13/05/2026 18:15

Yes,it does look dated it's the red ottoman and cushions .The bed is very nice though

ASingleDayOnVenus · 13/05/2026 18:24

I do something similar to @LibertyLily . Style your bedroom (and the rest of the house) with what you love, but pay no heed to what is dated or not and try not to ditch things just because they're no longer on trend.

The current habit of discarding perfectly good soft furnishings and even kitchens and bathrooms, simply because they're no long in fashion or you feel like a change, is disastrous for the planet. The replacements are likely to be poorer quality too, unless you buy good-quality second hand pieces. Have a look in charity shops, auction houses and car boot sales to find characterful bits and pieces that will look a bit different from what everyone else has, last for years and won't break the bank or the planet!

Style is so personal - I love our bedroom (the middle sized room as we use the main bedroom as a second living room) and it's perfect to us, but I'm sure wouldn't be to everyone's taste! I also do Insta, but our style certainly isn't anodyne or lacking in personality...imo 🤪

I'm gonna be brave and post a pic, not necessarily as inspiration for @Readinggirl, but to illustrate how a cohesive look can be pulled together on a fairly tight budget.

The curtains were a vintage fabric find online (I made them), ditto the cushions, curtain poles from a charity shop. Duvet cover from Dunelm, throw was an eBay find, bed skirt made by me from an ancient duvet cover. Mismatched lamps - eBay and TK Maxx (shades a splurge in Pooky's sale with 40% off), ceiling light left by previous owner.

The bedside tables were bought in a closing down sale - knocked down more as one was damaged - and I painted them using a sample pot of Little Greene paint. I painted the 'headboard' directly onto the wall using an Edward Bulmer sample pot as the budget wouldn't stretch to a real, upholstered one. All art found at car boots and fleamarkets for pennies, red frame - yep, another sample pot! The only real ££££ item was the rug, purchased with an inheritance 18 years ago.

We keep stuff for ages, because we love it and rarely replace (although I do regularly 'shop my home' and repurpose things), so it ends up being good value for money. Most of our furniture etc is second hand from eBay or auction houses picked up for bargain prices. Even the colour-drenched emulsion in this pic was found on eBay!

Edited

I agree style is very individualistic. I'm afraid that would be too busy for my tastes to be honest but I understand what you are saying.

@Readinggirl These are from Pooky and not cheap but they show bases which can go in any room. Some shades have texture and others are colourful. This brand has huge choice. They are not reading lights. If you want reading lights they have them too or John Lewis. These are more statement lamps.

Habitat has nice lamps and they have regular sales. This type of thing is simple and you can choose your own shade.

I don't think that bedroom is my style really. Yours looks much more liveable.

bedroommake · 13/05/2026 20:23

This is mine which isn’t to everyone’s taste and probably dated but it’s comfortable and cosy
i would change or get rid of the ottoman, add big table lamps, a big neutral rug and change the TV unit which would make a huge difference. I use a giant old trunk thing as a TV unit!
if you’re happy with it, that’s the main thing

@SwedishEdith They are quite Scandinavian and don’t add much texture. Nice and cheap but no wow.

Yes, we are maximalists which I don't expect to resonate with the majority of people and I certainly wasn't wanting you to like it 😂Everything we have, has been chosen because we love it, not anyone else, and not because it's on trend, which is so important imo.

Whether you find it too busy or not, the layering of colour, texture and pattern is what makes a cosy, warm and cocooning space which your room currently is not. You can achieve a welcoming bedroom with a few inexpensive changes if you don't just 'make do', but build the space gradually using things that speak to you. If you love the bed, for example, who cares if it's dated. The cushion and wall stickers are a different matter, lol!

I've always wanted a little HOME sign for my house lest I forget that this place is actually my home.

Is the LOVE cushion on your bed for the same sort of reason?

I am watching the latest Walter Presents, Nordic noir, and the main protagonist has a red/white sofa!!!

It was light-hearted. My posts have been quite kind I think.
I don't mind the love cushion. It's their bedroom they can have what they like.

Love your room @LibertyLily- so much character!

The Margo Selby collection is great, isn’t it? I picked the cheapest red option from Habitat upthread because I thought cost was a factor but if the OP was brave enough this or the Klee option would transform the look of her room.

I agree with whoever said it’s the bedframe more than the red that is a little bit dated, but a duvet cover like this would dazzle.

Thanks, I couldn't relax with that cover, sorry.

What is the ottoman made of?

I'd just cover it with a throw or something. It's not really the right size and looks a bit cheap and dated BUT it's perfectly functional.
You could cover it with upholstery fabric - not difficult but I'd just put a throw or rug over it.

I'd go bold with the colours - I like ankara prints and batik. If you're in Reading I think you can get some in the market there.

Not in reading.

It is very dated yes, a little like a student rental if I’m honest.

you don’t need to inject colour, you can stay with neutrals, but if you do, it should be tonal, something like a deep olive,

I think it’s the fact it’s red and it’s all matchy matchy, different accents to add interest with the same tonal bases works, like taupe, olive, creams etc.
