Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on going to USA this summer? Would current political situation put you off ?

No I'm going in April 🙂

Let’s hope you still have a smiley emoticon when you’re there

@StrikeForever A handful of people from Europe! Where would they put thousands of people? It’s not large numbers of Europeans.

Radyward · 25/01/2026 21:13

Not a chance! For the same reason I wouldn't go to Russia. I don't want to add to the economy of a dictator with no regard for human rights.

Exactly this. It would feel like Dark Tourism, supporting an evil regime which should be smothered by the rest of the world refusing to contribute to their economy. Go to Canada instead

cerbitude · 26/01/2026 02:28

It’s an explosive situation in the US right now. Not a chance I’d be going if I didn’t need to be there. Minnesota has brought in the national guard. ICE is absolutely everywhere. By all means bring your kids to watch a woman be pinned down and pepper sprayed or worse….

The biggest safety concern isn’t on the streets though. It’s at the border when we land in the country. They review phones, iPads etc for anything they don’t like the look of. Even the mildest joke about Border Control’s great, orange leader has tourists detained. Often for weeks at a time before being deported. Go and have a look. To my knowledge, this has happened to Canadians and Germans. It will have happened to other Nationals too.

If deportation is a worry, you could avoid all the hassle by going through immigration in Dublin. If you're turned back there you just have to get back to the UK.

Sadly the American people voted for Trump. It’s definitely the case that some now regret it. They need to understand that with a vote there’s also responsibility but they vote for self interest. As people will here! And do already.

Many, many millions either voted for Harris or stayed home. It's not OK to malign Americans as trump voters en masse. "Sadly the American people voted for trump" simply isnt true - the way the electoral college works, a candidate can win the popular vote and still lose.

3flyingducksarrive · 26/01/2026 03:15

Absolutely no way would we travel to the US at this point in time. I have friends in Minneapolis and it sounds like a fascist nightmare.

The US has a border in Ireland? 🤷‍♀️ Also the trauma of being abused and detained by US border control isn’t the only concern. It’s going there to support that fascism. You know taking a moral position? I have been treated much, much better than US border control are treating people, when I visited Russia.

We’re going over the October half term, I don’t see any reason why we’d have any issues.

so I assume you haven’t at all informed yourself over what is happening in Minnesota? you may not have it on your itinerary but I do wonder what city is next.

Emilyinspace · 26/01/2026 12:16

We went last year and America felt like
a failed state.

Uneasy, expensive, sad, full of homeless and drug addicts, poor food, poor infrastructure…….

I wonder if people went on holiday to Germany in the late 1930s? Genuinely wondering!

Yes they did. Julia Boyd book Travellers in the Third Reich is a collection of their observations too. It’s an interesting read.

Yes white tourists are probably safe. No I personally wouldn’t go there as it’s a corrupt regime with little regard for their own people. I also wouldn’t go to Russia, Dubai or Saudi Arabia for pretty much the same reasons. Rather spend my money somewhere else.

Did in October 🙂

Russia is no travel on government travel advice. USA obviously not and many Muslims will go to Mecca so that’s a country millions visit.

The irony of PP’s stupid comment is that, since moving here, I’ve found Americans to be far happier and more positive than Brits. They don’t spend their life whingeing and have far more of a ‘can-do’ attitude to life.

This. And the mid-term elections are in November so there could be even more problems coming unless something good happens in the next months.

And the murder on the weekend shows that even white people aren’t safe anymore

MrsArcher23 · 26/01/2026 16:15

We will holiday elsewhere while the current regime holds sway.

expatme · 26/01/2026 16:29

I'm American, so do go back and forth due to family and because we still have a house there. If not for those reasons, I wouldn't go. The odds are overwhelming that you will pass through border control just fine and will be perfectly safe, but I encourage everyone who can to spend their tourist money elsewhere.

There have been several white people detained, sometimes for weeks. Including Canadians, Germans and a British guy travelling with his 11-year-old autistic son.

I agree, before going i had the impression americans were rude, theyre really nice! The only rude person I've experienced is 1 man at airport security and to be fair it was during the government shut down so I probably wouldn't be in the best mood either 🤣

No, just a realist who won’t visit a fascist regime. Maybe you don’t know, but there are record numbers of Americans feeing the country to live in Europe. You can see some if their accounts on YouTube. They say they now feel much safer. I think they probably know the US better than than you do.

Crushed23 · 26/01/2026 19:42

The US is still the third most popular destination for people emigrating from the UK. 🤷‍♀️
