Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on going to USA this summer? Would current political situation put you off ?

We’re going - il take the (minuscule) risk.

Probably more chance of the plane crashing than there being a war or whatever it is people are catastrophising about atm.

Obvs make sure you have insurance!

whatsagoodusername · 19/01/2026 15:14

It will depend on where you’re going, a bit. But most tourist places will be fine.

I grew up in the US and was back four times last year to see family. It feels uneasy (democrat, very liberal area), but generally life is just getting on as usual. Stay away from protests and it should be all right.

I am accompanying DS on a school trip (SEN reasons) in May to DC and NY. I hate to admit it, but I am much less happy about it than I was when we signed up. But I expect it will be fine.

sleepwouldbenice · 19/01/2026 15:16

I've been to the US several times, plan to go again
But absolutely not under this current situation
Wouldn't give to their economy and would feel so frustrated by the locals. Obviously this wouldn't be entirely reasonable but its how I would genuinely feel.

Christmaseree · 19/01/2026 15:33

It wouldn’t put me off at all. I went twice last year to a few different areas and am going again early March and early May this year.
When I was there it felt like a completely regular place to visit.

Pistachiocake · 19/01/2026 15:35

Should have thought it would be at least as safe as most other places you might go? There are attacks here too, so sadly nowhere is safe. If it's the idea of a long trip putting people off, especially parents, that is a different issue, but that would be my reason.

Thunderdcc · 19/01/2026 15:38

We were going to go on the basis that flights might be cheaper and Customs at Miami was empty in April! But now all the tariff war etc is escalating we are thinking maybe not I don't want my insurance invalidated by an act of war.

Nesbi · 19/01/2026 15:41

I won’t take my kids to the US until there is a major shift away from its current descent into fascism.

It is going to be awkward if work want to send me over this year (as they have for the last few years) as I’m really not keen on entering the country even without my family.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/01/2026 16:14

First off - if I could afford to go to the States right now, I wouldn’t. The political situation & atmosphere puts me right off. Plus I probably follow & interact with too many anti-Trump people for them to let me in.

That said - I think going to the States is probably fine, either way a few caveats.

Firstly, are you going for a general holiday or a specific event? Eg World Cup? If it’s the former, it’s probably fine especially in tourist heavy areas; if it’s the latter you may want to hold off & see how the next few weeks pan out.

Secondly, & I hate to say this but it may also depend on what you look like & how you sound. ICE are heavily profiling PoC including Native Americans, & even accosting people who have different accents so yeah, that’s a concern.

Thirdly, Where do you want to go? Obviously ICE isn’t everywhere - but I doubt many people had Minnesota down as a hot bed of insurrection on their 2026 bingo card! Red states seem to have less ICE presence, Blue states more.

Personally, unless you HAVE to go to the States or just really don’t care about what’s happening (as in you think it won’t have any impact on you) I’d say go elsewhere this year.

Toottooot · 19/01/2026 16:15

Not at all - would be more than happy to holiday there.

Ciri · 19/01/2026 16:17

God no. We may well be at war with them if they invade Greenland. I don’t think anyone should be supporting the US at the moment. I’d switch to Canada instead.

zurigo · 19/01/2026 16:18

We're citizens and will be going this summer. We were last there in Oct and all was normal. TBH, I don't think twice about going. I wouldn't go to protests here, I don't go to protests there and I certainly wouldn't be interfering with the work of anyone carrying a gun.

Snoken · 19/01/2026 16:49

I don't think I would be at any significant risk of getting hurt but I will do whatever I can to not hand my money over to that government so for that reason I wouldn't set foot there. That is with the current situation, there is no way of knowing what batshit things will be done in the next few months though, the country could look a whole lot different so I wouldn't book anything that isn't refundable.

goodtoesnaughtytoes · 19/01/2026 18:17

I won’t be going to the USA until Trump is no longer President.

Mindlesslyscrolling · 19/01/2026 18:26

I've enjoyed a few trips in the past and wouldn't be in a hurry back regardless of the political situation! I imagine if you stay away from hotspots/protests or anything too controversial you'll be grand!

Not while that fascist is in charge. No way.

helplessbanana · 19/01/2026 18:31

I would not want any of my hard-earned money going anywhere near that country at the moment.

Pallisers · 19/01/2026 18:36

I live in the US and would prefer if people didn't visit as tourists - would love to see tourist dollars go down. It is already happening with Canadian tourists and I don't blame them.

Tiredhotmess · 19/01/2026 18:39

We did travel to the US last year, but only because our holiday had been booked a long time ago, before Trump got back in power. We didn't have any issues while we were there, but I certainly wouldn't entertain the idea of going back again anytime soon. The situation is too volatile, and I feel very strongly that we should be doing as much as we can to boycott the US currently.

Idontmindmondays · 19/01/2026 18:43

We won't go while the current President is in power. It's not so much about personal risk (though we are a mixed family so there is some concerns) but I don't feel comfortable supporting an economy that is wandering towards fascism. The normal Americans aren't my issue, I'm sure many of them are also unhappy with the direction that US politics is taking, but the view that civil liberties are optional isn't something I wish to support.

hahagogomomo · 19/01/2026 18:46

I’m not going there until there’s a democrat in charge. If you fancy crossing the Atlantic go to Canada, lovely country who actually want us to visit and your money goes further

PermanentTemporary · 19/01/2026 18:47

I think it’s pretty safe but I’ve no interest in going while that man is in power - and I adore US history and a lot of the culture.

faffadoodledo · 19/01/2026 18:49

I used to live in the US, and one of my children is an accidental American, having been born there. I used to love it. But I wouldn’t go now. Not for safety reasons, but for the same reasons I wouldn’t go somewhere like Dubai - it’s a nasty regime.
if I HAD to go I’d make damn sure my esta was in order and the same would go for my social media too.

For us, it’s not about the risk, it’s choosing not to travel to a country that voted for such questionable leadership. It’s too bad, as we had planned to go to Disney. 🤷‍♀️

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 19/01/2026 18:55

It wouldn't worry me in terms of putting myself at risk etc, I do question more the spending of dollars in a country that's currently behaving so badly and is threatening ours with financial penalties like tariffs. I'd rather take my money elsewhere. There's so many amazing places to go, and there's lots of places offering similar things; Europe has some amazing theme parks (like Efteling, Europapark, disneyland paris is expanding and redeveloping, Phantasialand - all beautifully themed), amazing scenery, beautiful cities etc, for winter/autumn/spring sun shine there are lovely spots all over the world. I can't see the US offering much that can't be found in Canada, Europe, Australia etc.

Happyasapiginmuck1 · 19/01/2026 18:58

Not a chance! For the same reason I wouldn't go to Russia. I don't want to add to the economy of a dictator with no regard for human rights.
