Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on going to USA this summer? Would current political situation put you off ?

Not put me off, we are going to Disney world Florida for 2 weeks end of June into July. Happens to be when the World Cup is on too 🙈

MamaBearCharlie · 19/01/2026 19:01

Although a few places in states are on our bucket list as a family (and the years rolling by…!) we won’t be entering until trump isn’t at the helm.

make sure you have travel insurance. Who knows if we'll be at war by that time if he doesn't calm down about Greenland.

GrethaGreen · 19/01/2026 19:04

I would not go to the US until they get rid of this madman and his crew.

DecoratingDiva · 19/01/2026 19:06

I personally wouldn’t go but that is because I don’t want to support their current system.

If you are going somewhere touristy, are white with an Anglo name on your passport, travelling as a family etc then you will probably be fine.

If you are doing anything that could indicate lefty-leanings or you don’t look or sound like a nice middle class white person then I would be more worried about travelling there, not because it isn’t safe but because they might not let you in.

Papercompany · 19/01/2026 19:08

I wouldn't go to the US currently. Not while that lunatic is in charge.

I just think the US is behaving so badly that we shouldn't support them in any way if possible. It is possible that they will have 'taken' Greenland by then and who knows what may happen.

MsButterfly · 19/01/2026 19:13

We’re doing Disney this summer and did California last year. While I don’t support what’s going on there, it wouldn’t put me off. The US and Disney especially works so well for us as a family of 5. I feel the clock is ticking on family holidays and Covid stole a few of those years so I’m not willing to give up our destination of choice to make a political point (that is far far too small to be of consequence). So far nothing feels any different in touristy areas.

Namechangerage · 19/01/2026 19:13

I wouldn’t, in fact I have turned down an upcoming work trip to the US this year. To me, it’s just not worth it.

DallasMinor · 19/01/2026 19:16

My father is a proud American in his late 80s. He won’t even go there at the moment. He’s dedicating his life to outliving Trump so he can go home.

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/01/2026 19:18

I think it will be generally safe but in no way do I want to support that orange lunatic so I won’t be giving him (or his country) any of my hard earned cash.

LateLifeReturnee · 19/01/2026 19:20

I'm going to a weddong in April in California - I see very little issue goibg there. We have family in Idaho I have to see and I'd rather not. Last trip to Idaho two years ago was grim, very rabid republican and I'd ratger not buy groceries with a gun in my face.

Tourist areas will be fine, but if i didn't love my family I wouldn't go at all.

Radiatorvalves · 19/01/2026 19:22

Apart from my concerns about Trump, I have zero desire to go to the states at the moment due to the insane cost of living (and I live in London ). I rather suspect that my social media would be a potential issue as I work in compliance and post on things like corruption. UNcontroversial stuff until recently. If you have to go, go…. Unless you’re a poc and going to Minneapolis you’ll probably be ok. Personally there are many other interesting and cheaper destinations that I’d rather visit.

EwwSprouts · 19/01/2026 19:26

Wouldn't go. Been many times before but do not wish to contribute my hard earned cash to that economy. Spoke with friend who lives in San Francisco last week and she said no family nor friends were going out this year.

Papercompany · 19/01/2026 19:27

I wonder if people went on holiday to Germany in the late 1930s? Genuinely wondering!

Om83 · 19/01/2026 19:27

I wouldn’t want my money to be going to the US at the moment. I would also be slightly worried about not being let in and not surprised in the slightest if Trump decides to take against the UK/Starmer for not conceding Denmark and banning us from travel like he’s done with all those other ‘risky’ countries.. there is too much unrest and unpredictability for me at the moment.

Yes, they did, and some left very interesting accounts of their experiences and observations.

Edited to add - foreign travel was the privilege of the rich back then. Germany also had its share of foreign students in universities- again, these students were from well off backgrounds.

Lordofmyflies · 19/01/2026 19:37

I'm not going whilst the orange man is president. The world is a big place and I have no urgency to give the USA my tourist dollars at the moment.

Mrscharlieeeee · 19/01/2026 19:38

We just came back from Orlando in November, were looking at booking for next year but have decided to hang fire. DH is adamant he doesn’t want to return under this current administration, I’m not quite so opposed but would probably swap Florida for California instead.

zizza · 19/01/2026 19:42

Absolutely no way we're going anywhere near the place until that idiot is out of the picture. Not safety concerns particularly, but don't feel like giving them my hard earned cash at the mo (and not sure they'd let me in if they're going to trawl social media)

reluctantbrit · 19/01/2026 19:53

No way with the lunatic in charge. Who knows what he will do next.

DH's work is re-thinking trips, they already cancelled an appearance at a conference last week and a trip in May is in doubt.

There may be changes regarding the ESTA if that thread about passwords etc will go through and then I won't ever get entry into the USA again.

I sit and wait and hope that in several years time it's a better place to be.
Even our friend from New York isn't going anyway and he said his mum better keeps breathing so he doesn't have to go to a funeral.

Smudgesmith · 19/01/2026 19:59

I personally wouldn't go on principle. Its akin to going to 1930s Germany. The US is now a facist government. Even if you're white and don't have any social media accounts that you have commented on that the government wouldn't like why support? Also those saying make sure you have insurance are not really understanding that insurance is invalid if there or certain events. Acts of war would be one. Trump is literally threatening to invade a country and making threats against those that support that country.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 19/01/2026 20:00

I wouldn’t go out of principle. I can’t stand Trump, so until he’s gone I won’t go. I know it’ll piss him off that tourist numbers are down so I want him to feel the pain! 🤣

lilywillywoo · 19/01/2026 20:02

Nope. We are planning on going to Toronto in August as husband has concert tickets, we had thought about combining with New York, as the DDs are keen go there, but we decided not while Trump is in charge. It’s not even that we feel more at risk, although that’s a small part of it, but just don’t want to give them any of our money.

JanuaryBluez · 19/01/2026 20:24

We already have a trip booked which was booked a while ago. Did consider trying to swap the tickets (it's a companion voucher from BA) but the alternative destinations for the dates we can do weren't places we'd ever want to travel to. So, whilst I'm not 100% happy about going and I'm sure we will be judged for going, we are just booking as much as we can that can be cancelled up to a couple of weeks before departure.

sunflower85 · 19/01/2026 20:38

We’re going over the October half term, I don’t see any reason why we’d have any issues.
