Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on going to USA this summer? Would current political situation put you off ?

Just got back from an extended work trip in the U.S. visited a lot of Arizona (Canyon south rim, Sedona, Scottsdale, Flagstaf). Also spent time in utah and california. All business as usual, friendly and no sign of any trouble.

Going again in 2 weeks to St Augustine with work. Don't fret, social media does not show the true America.

Try living just north of the border with threats from Trump that we’ll be the 51st state. Nothing normal about it. We won’t visit the US.

@Parker231 But no one goes on holiday there! Those going on holiday or work trips can go and feel safe and welcome. If anyone think a personal protest by staying away affects anything - dream on I’m afraid. It’s just best to enjoy the USA and avoid politics and that’s easy to do.

I’m assuming you don’t live in Canada?

@Parker231 Most people on here are from Uk. Plus not all Canadians aren’t visiting USA!

The impact of personal protest is being felt and I think 2026 will be worse.

"The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) calculated that the US tourism economy lost $12.5 billion in foreign visitor spending in 2025. The US Travel Association warns of serious consequences for employment. The sector supports about 15 million jobs nationwide." https://www.tourism-review.com/us-tourism-reports-declining-numbers-of-tourist-arrivals-news15270

Crossing from the border nearest to us are down 24% so a significant impact and businesses particularly in tourism close to the border in the US are being badly impacted

Impact on U.S. Tourism:

  • Economic Loss: The U.S. Travel Associationwarns that reduced Canadian, the top source of international visitors, could threaten 140,000 hospitality jobs.
  • Specific Regions Affected: Las Vegas saw a 40% drop in Canadian air traffic, with other affected areas including Florida, Montana (down ~40% in spending), and New York.
  • Business Disruptions: Over 50% of businesses in some border areas like Bellingham, Washington, report losses and are forced to cut staff hours.
  • Root Causes: Factors include increased Canadian domestic travel, a surge in travel to Mexico, and economic uncertainty regarding U.S. tariffs and political climate.
Alternative Trends:
  • Canadian Domestic Tourism: Canadians are vacationing at home, with domestic revenue hitting a record-breaking C$59 billion between May and August 2025, notes Destination Canada.
  • Alternative Destinations: A 12% surge in Canadian tourists was noted in Mexico, while Air Canada has expanded flights to Europe and the Caribbean to bypass the U.S..
  • Marketing Response: Some U.S. regions, such as California and Florida, have launched campaigns to try and lure Canadian tourists back.

@Parker231 So 75% no change in behaviour. If I was Canadian I’d be furious too by the way, but I’m not. I’ve still got things to see and do there! I hate to tell you, but the Chinese are still going. I’m amazed Canadians go near Las Vegas in the first place. Yuk.

so I assume you haven’t at all informed yourself over what is happening in Minnesota? you may not have it on your itinerary but I do wonder what city is next.

I’ve read the lot in detail, thanks for your concern. Perhaps I’m desensitised insofar as I grew up in NI during the Troubles, but I have zero concerns.
