Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on going to USA this summer? Would current political situation put you off ?

I've seen a small trickle of football fans cancelling their World Cup trips. Bravo them. That's a big old deal for a football fan.

17,000 pulled their ticket applications.

Out of 500 million.

A non-story.

The Olympics will be held in Los Angeles in 2028.

So again, there will be no shortage of tourists in the US in the coming years.

People can tell themselves that tourism in the US is drying up, but reality paints a different picture.

Not a chance that I would support the Trump regime in any shape, manner or form. So no, I won't go.

When he's gone and if sanity returns, of course I'll go again. It is a fabulous country and its people are so warm and hospitable.

I think we have to vote with our feet, and not support this despicable despot.

ICE will be very busy so with millions of foreigners.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 21/01/2026 13:56

I'd not be too bothered about safety as long as you avoid obvious hotpots but I won't give that country a penny of my money. There are plenty of other lovely places to visit.

International tourism to the US is definitely declining month by month and was throughout 2025. It might seem like a small thing to do but when a lot of people do it it's noticeable. For most people, not going to the US for a few years isn't a huge sacrifice but it wil still annoy someone like Trump when people don't want to visit his "great" America.

International travel to the US keeps sliding. Visits fell for the 8th straight month.

Visits to the US by international travelers declined for the eighth straight month in December, in a continued blow to the tourism industry.

In all honesty, I would love for tourism to fall. I live in a major city on the East Coast, and you can’t move for tourists in Nov-Dec and Jun-Aug. It’s unbearable. I would love for tourists to stay away and to get my city back. But alas, there’s still tens of millions of them every year.

500 million people applied for World Cup tickets, with 80% of games being held in the States.

So there’s going to be no shortage of tourists in the US in 2026.

The figure of 500 million seems to be according to FIFA, that well-known bastion of accounting integrity (and hander-out of the world's second most important peace prize).

I hope you'll excuse me if I take with a pinch of salt the claim that 10% of all adults on the planet applied for tickets to an event that would cost 30% of people a year's salary just to get to. I suspect the true figure is about one-tenth of what is claimed, and most of those will be wannabe scalpers.

It doesn’t really matter how many people applied. There are 7 million tickets and they will definitely sell out, because there are enough people on the planet who can afford $200+ per ticket.

I really hope you’re right that only 50 million people applied as that will increase my chances of getting a ticket in the ballot ten-fold. 🙏

Honestly MN is soooo ridiculous!
we did a southern road trip last year, tourists from every corner of the globe.
weve planned another one for this year, and we can’t wait.
Americans couldn’t care less, most of them love their country and are hugely patriotic, they love visitors and I felt very welcome

You're right. But I guess some people feel doing something is better that doing nothing. And I applaud those people.

As I've said - I was a huge fan of the US - many happy years spent there. And but for Trump I'd return.

To be fair, most people being reticent aren't worried about their own safety; they're making a small stand by saying they won't travel there and in any way support a maniac in charge of once great country

OhDear111 · 21/01/2026 18:59

@princesspadam We went last May/June. Americans who spoke to us were almost all concerned about Trumps policies that affected them and their friends but were concerned about how it looked to others. There were not many who wanted to talk though - a few. Most people got on with their holidays and we got on with ours. The political situation feels 1 million miles away when you are there and most Americans are not bothered about much outside the USA.

Spending money there just keeps people employed as it does here and I’d support National Park staff by going, not by staying away. Ditto hospitality staff. I’m not a believer in punishing ordinary folk because you don’t like the top guy.

We had a very good trip and we learn something from the Americans we spoke too. Many were ashamed of the policies and of Trump.

Cat1504 · 21/01/2026 19:02

Nope not me …I’m going to Canada instead

Last year was a very different situation to now. The ICE attacks have increased, the National Guard has been deployed - even if that may not happen again -, the lunatic has invaded another country, the talk about Greenland hasn't been solved and he now starts on the mid-term elections.

DH was in Atlanta last May and found it fairly quite, what his business aquaintances told him in at a conference in November was a very different picture.

The blant dismissal of how another human being is treated - not just the killing in Minnosota, is just too much for me to entertain the idea of going.

No, I prefer to avoid fascist states

OhDear111 · 21/01/2026 21:54

Sadly the American people voted for Trump. It’s definitely the case that some now regret it. They need to understand that with a vote there’s also responsibility but they vote for self interest. As people will here! And do already.

user1471548941 · 22/01/2026 20:32

We’re going! But after having a horrendous time in immigration in Chicago last year, avoiding US immigration at all costs! Flying into Vancouver (SO friendly) and then cruising to Alaska meaning we will get a designated slot for US immigration at the cruise port!

The biggest safety concern isn’t on the streets though. It’s at the border when we land in the country. They review phones, iPads etc for anything they don’t like the look of. Even the mildest joke about Border Control’s great, orange leader has tourists detained. Often for weeks at a time before being deported. Go and have a look. To my knowledge, this has happened to Canadians and Germans. It will have happened to other Nationals too.

You might, but millions of people in your area will at least partially, and some fully, rely on tourist money for their income.

winterbluess · 22/01/2026 21:21

No I'm going in April 🙂

Ciri · 23/01/2026 05:47

Whilst I wouldn’t say anything to them because it’s rude I would judge friends and family who choose to go to the US on holiday at the moment,

hippospot · 23/01/2026 10:39

I won't travel there while he's in power, on principle. I'd travel to Canada instead, to show solidarity with them and contribute to their tourist economy.
