my DC holds an offer for mechanical engineering there, we don't know well
I am getting the feeling that Endcliffe is quite popular with undergraduates. Any words of wisdom for someone not local and applying remotely please?

many thanks

DS1 is at Sheffield and he was in Endcliffe for his first year. Loved the halls. Lots of green space, bar, shop etc. A good choice 🙂

Littlefish · 27/03/2025 22:07

Dd was in Endcliffe last year and absolutely loved it.

The other big Halls is Ranmoor. Endcliffe has lots of green space around it. I think Ranmoor has a gym.

There is an app/website where you can look at short comments left by people who have signed up to particular flats. It means you can then make contact before term starts. Dd really liked this feature as it allayed some of her anxiety about not knowing anyone.

Crunk · 27/03/2025 22:08

Students are already booking into endcliffe so if he likes it he should get a move on!

TickingAlongNicely · 27/03/2025 22:11

He will get his exercise in... there's a lovely hill between the University and the accommodation, I remember it well. (And presuming the engineering department hasn't moved, its the furthest bit from the accommodation!)

Marking place!

intrepidgiraffe · 27/03/2025 22:23

Most first years are in Endcliffe. City centre is in theory more convenient but there’s far less sense of community. Ranmoor also nice. When I was there the best community was in the flats with shared bathrooms rather than en suites.

JaffavsCookie · 27/03/2025 22:30

My dc lived in broad lane flats for his first year as an UG, literally a stones throw from the engineering dept, ( we live rurally and he said he wanted a short commute for a change)
Bog standard student flats, couple of loos and showers, shared kitchen. I can’t remember how many per flat tbh.

RNJ35 · 28/03/2025 14:50

My DS was in Allen Court. The city accommodation isn't everybody's cup of tea tea, but he liked being able to roll out of bed and into the Diamond (also an engineering student). About half his flat were international students which can be hit and miss, but he landed lucky with a great sociable bunch and has made some really good friends through connections with them.

MadameBethune · 28/03/2025 15:07

Yes Endcliffe. A green and leafy area, nice walk down through the Botanic Gardens to town, and a handy bar, shop etc on site.

My daughter has accepted Sheffield today. Very little accommodation left. Does more get released? Endcliffe isn't even 9n the options. Any thoughts. TIA

NCTDN · 31/03/2025 18:37

I think (and hope) that they roll out accommodation slowly, releasing more gradually. They guarantee all guest years accommodation so there must be lots left at Endcliffe. DS is signed up to they webinar for Wed for more info.

How do you know? DS firmed yesterday but hasn’t heard anything yet.

My DD is currently in 1st year at Sheffield - she is in Endcliffe. So she picked top floor - definitely try to avoid the ground floor flats. She didn’t firm until mid April and got her flat a week or so later. No rush right now (if it’s like last year) as they release in batches - she waited for quite a few days until she got a flat she wanted. She’s in Derwent which is a great position. Happy to answer any other questions ☺️

NeatCoralMember · 31/03/2025 20:22

@NCTDN should read last week NOT today. Snd can't work out how to edit. @2kidsand1dog thank up! Reassuring.

I'm so pleased she's plumped for sheffield

apricotdreams · 31/03/2025 20:38

@2kidsand1dog My DD is going to accept her offer from Sheffield this week. You said not to go for a ground floor flat. Why is that? Did you feel it was unsafe?

There's lots left at Endcliffe but they release in batches. My DD has found a room this afternoon in Endcliffe. They roll them out gradually.

It's just not as private. Everyone looks in and you don't get a view. I don't think it's unsafe.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/03/2025 20:48

I live in Sheffield.

Ranmoor and Endcliffe are both lovely leafy areas. Ranmoor is really really low crime.

Ranmoor is nearer, but Endcliffe is near the lovely parks.

Theimpossiblegirl · 31/03/2025 20:49

Dd was in Endcliffe and on the ground floor. She was very happy there. She then rented with friends but they did sort out their second year accomodation very early.

2kidsand1dog · 31/03/2025 20:56

From what my DD said about people she knows in the ground floor flats is that they aren’t very private and often students will band on the windows late at night when coming home - this is just the experience some have had

Delphigirl · 31/03/2025 21:05

My daughter was put in overflow rooms taken by the uni in private accommodation. It was fine, but she spent all her time socialising at Endcliffe and really wished she had been there.

I think they send out log in details so you can get onto the accomodation page. I called today and they said that they hold back half the rooms for boys in the mixed flats and there are plenty of boys' rooms left but the girls rooms are filling up quickly. Boys more generally leave it until the last minute.

shortsaint · 31/03/2025 21:59

My son has firmed up his offer and no news on accommodation. I assumed it was after A level results? What should we expect?

MountainofWashing · 31/03/2025 22:31

Hi my DC is doing mechanical engineering at Sheffield and very pleased to be at endcliffe although it's a quite a way from engineering facilities about a 35 min walk I think. Lots of 9am.starts too. He said it's much more sociable than the city accommodation. However there is uni accommodation very close to engineering if that is preferred. Ranmoor has the gym but apparently the main gym is a lot better. Just keep a regular eye on the system as rooms get released all the time.

Is there any way of finding out which direction the rooms are?
