my DC holds an offer for mechanical engineering there, we don't know well
I am getting the feeling that Endcliffe is quite popular with undergraduates. Any words of wisdom for someone not local and applying remotely please?

many thanks

@purplewibbleapologies my post wasn’t very clear. The first paragraph was aimed at shreddies.. The second at the op.
Allen court would be a good fit for shreddies ds.

purplewibble · 18/05/2025 15:23

thanks @troppibambini6 I realise my post isn’t clear either. I’d noted they’d said their Ds is autistic and so is my Ds

troppibambini6 · 18/05/2025 15:57

@purplewibblei see that now sorry…..I read it wrong!!
Allen court definitely a good fit for autistic, less social and those wanting to be right next to the city centre, engineering and transport.
Two of the boys in DDs flat were autistic and seemed very happy there both were doing engineering as were most of the building.

DS is just now looking at booking his Sheffield accommodation and it's showing as just a few rooms left (and all single sex) at his preferred location. Question for those with experience: should he expect more will be released at this time of year or just go or what there is now?

TheGrimSmile · 25/05/2025 20:36

I think they are still releasing in batches but I would call the accommodation office on Tuesday to ask.

MyPresumablyScrotum · 25/05/2025 20:40

Has anyone paid a deposit? DD days she's not been asked for any money but has a room and flat number.

purplewibble · 25/05/2025 20:50

@MyPresumablyScrotum I was wondering the same. Ds chose his room a week or so ago but hasn’t been asked for deposit and hasn’t had email confirmation either

Changes17 · 25/05/2025 21:35

Thanks @TheGrimSmile Will do.

Tartanboots · 26/05/2025 09:55

We haven't paid a deposit either

2kidsand1dog · 26/05/2025 11:52

My DD is currently in 1st year - we paid her deposit after results day once her place was confirmed. Happy to answer any other questions

MyPresumablyScrotum · 26/05/2025 12:11

She's the third child going to uni, I'm sure we paid upfront with the others hence being nervous we should have paid. Also she's the one child who won't have read any emails.

TheGrimSmile · 26/05/2025 13:08

My dd has paid the deposit because she has an unconditional offer as she took a year out. If they have conditional offers, they don't pay until after results day.

Did you ring ? When ds was looking they were all pretty much an equal split of boy / girl in each flat.

Changes17 · 27/05/2025 10:25

Ah, so perhaps it’s not single sex, @NCTDN?

NCTDN · 27/05/2025 10:31

I can’t remember how ds worked that out. Each flat he looked at already had girls in there I think, and even if they were only two rooms taken out of the ten in the flat, only five were available to book, suggesting it was 5&5. The one he’s got is 5 girls, 4 boys and one unknown I think.

TheGrimSmile · 28/05/2025 05:00

Unless it specifically states it is single sex, then it will be mixed. But PP is right- they split each flat so that in a flat of 8, for example, 4 will be male and 4 female. It might just be that his flat hasn't been opened to girls yet so it's just boys at the moment.

Changes17 · 28/05/2025 08:13

DS rang up yesterday. They said there were still a few rooms to release - though he missed out on yesterday’s release. June 6 is apparently the deadline for choosing your own / after that they are allocated. The ones he found were single sex - he’s not completely opposed to that, if that’s what there is.

Thereshegoesagain · 28/05/2025 08:31

My DD is in Endcliffe and loves it.
Flat of 6 with en suites.
From memory, the roons/flats were released bit by bit and she was in various Snapchat groups that alerted her to new releases. She had a clear idea of what flat where etc she wanted. There is lots online Tik tok etc about it all.
It's a lovely setting and a nice 30 min walk to uni for her (ignoring the hill!).

I'm curious as to why boys would want single sex...I get why girls might, but boys?

Changes17 · 28/05/2025 12:55

Who knows. It's gone anyway. Wish DS had taken this seriously sooner!

Changes17 · 28/05/2025 17:27

Take it back - he has a room in Ranmoor!

That's an interesting question on Mumsnet, given the number of posters in Primary Education who agonise about how tthere won't be enough of a friendship pool for their darling DD / DS (admittedly usually DD, tbf) , because there are too many of the opposite sex in the class and too few of the same...

Don't like girls in that way and are hoping for more chance of a romantic attachment? / because of the possibility that they'll all turn out to be the Kitchen Monitor variety? / because they're raging misogynists and its a chance to get away from women in their living space full stop? / because their religion doesn't allow mixing (admittedly usually a reason given for the females and yes, I suppose the flip side isn't necessariry that their brothers have the same restrictionsput on them)?

That being said, DS2 is gay and his his best friends in sixth form were girls; DD found herself the victim of the female Kitchen Monitor in first year and went into a second year house with the two lads from the flat.

BabyCat2020z · 06/06/2025 06:54

Son who is ( hopefully) also doing mechanical engineering has booked Crewe. I didn't think the walk to uni was too bad from there. It is the more social place to stay though I'm sure the city accommodation would be fine and closer for morning lectures! It was really hard to book standard accommodation, but I persevered as am going to have 2 at uni at the same time so any saving helps!
