my DC holds an offer for mechanical engineering there, we don't know well
I am getting the feeling that Endcliffe is quite popular with undergraduates. Any words of wisdom for someone not local and applying remotely please?

many thanks

Yes please @2kidsand1dog

Which rooms would be not facing the Edge?

I'm from Sheffield originally, and went to Sheffield University. Ranmoor and Endcliffe are both a really long walk from Engineering and not on the tram route. Bear in mind that Sheffield is very hilly, pretty windy, frequently wet and occasionally icy. The city centre's a really fun and interesting place to live and walking distance from the Student Union, which has a pretty good social scene, as well as useful places like the library. Obviously your DC could still meet up with friends in the suburban halls if they were in city centre accomodation, but they'd probably also explore the city more - there are lots of free/cheap things to do and loads of absolutely amazing things to eat (often incredibly cheaply, if you know where to go).

intrepidgiraffe · 03/04/2025 11:10

@NCTDNit depends because even Howden G block which is where I was (as close to the edge as you can get - handy for using laundrette etc) half of the rooms are facing out over the lake rather than towards the edge because the flats have a corridor with rooms on both sides.

NCTDN · 03/04/2025 11:28

It would be lovely to be able to choose one looking over the lake!

TheGrimSmile · 03/04/2025 13:39

Does anyone have any DC doing sociology there this year? Have they released the accommodation to sociology students yet? I'm not sure how they do the releases. DD took a gap year. It just seems odd as there are loads of students who seem to be doing architecture at the moment so I wondered if they release in course batches?

NCTDN · 03/04/2025 14:32

My understanding is that accommodation is open to book around 72 hours after firming Sheffield regardless as to their course.

NeuroSpicyMumof3 · 03/04/2025 14:43

My DD is going Sheffield this year. After visiting the accommodation she has picked St Vincents Place in the city centre as its a good fit for her, 15 min walk to her course, shops nearby etc. 600 capacity and a beautiful converted church attached with socialising spaces, cinema room etc in 🙂

Yes, that would make sense. Thanks.

NCTDN · 03/04/2025 14:56

@NeuroSpicyMumof3 do you know if she could change her accommodation to a different one if she changes her mind?

I'm pretty sure she can but will ask her and come back to you.

Just to say re-St Vincents place, ignore the google reviews, they are really old and the place looked lovely when DD went.

NCTDN · 03/04/2025 15:06

Ds has a friend there now. He really likes it.

Yes please @2kidsand1dog

My DD is in block F top floor room 5 - this is on the opposite side to The Edge and furthest away from the kitchen and flat door - it’s a lovely room but for some reason is slightly narrower than the others - it’s not stopped her enjoying it and her and her best friends usually congregate in her room!

NCTDN · 03/04/2025 19:57

Thanks @2kidsand1dog. I wonder if it means that odd numbered rooms overlook the lake? Or numbers 1-5? Would you be able to ask her?
I know I’m overthinking this…

So she’s just home and says she is on the lake side however there is a building in the way of the lake!
On her side the rooms are 5-10 - 10 nearest the kitchen in her flat in Derwent but this will change depending on the building and block

painpain · 03/04/2025 23:07

My daughter has also been accepted for Mechanical Engineering. She has a room booked in Derwent at Endcliffe. The general opinion seems to be that Endcliffe is the place to be if you want to be very social.

apricotdreams · 31/03/2025 20:38

@2kidsand1dog My DD is going to accept her offer from Sheffield this week. You said not to go for a ground floor flat. Why is that? Did you feel it was unsafe?

Actually, we've been to have a look today and many of the ground floor flats are actually quite elevated so.people wouldn't see in necessarily. It depends on the particular apartment.

Has your dd found somewhere yet @apricotdreams?

shreddies · 08/04/2025 07:59

What would be a good option for an engineer who will not want a hugely sociable flat (ASD) and would prefer to be close to the engineering department?

We walked from endcliffe to the engineering building (the diamond). It was about 23 minutes but downhill so would take a little liberty getting back. DS will be taking a bike as he knows he wants endcliffe but also knows there will be a lot of 9am starts.
I know the city centre accommodation is closer - he’s got a friend in the converted church - can’t remember the name of that.

NCTDN · 08/04/2025 08:10

Liberty?! Longer !!

JaffavsCookie · 08/04/2025 10:10

@shreddies where my ds was, literally across the road from some of the engineering buildings and a very very short walk to the diamond building. They were uni owned and if I remember correctly called broad lane flats

Thanks @NCTDN and @JaffavsCookie much appreciated

apricotdreams · 09/04/2025 22:22

@TheGrimSmile Yes, she has selected a room in Froggatt. Not sure why that one but she said she had done lots of research and wanted that. Not sure which floor, third maybe. She seems happy with her choice.

NCTDN · 10/04/2025 07:46

Ds has also just booked a room in frogatt.
