my DC holds an offer for mechanical engineering there, we don't know well
I am getting the feeling that Endcliffe is quite popular with undergraduates. Any words of wisdom for someone not local and applying remotely please?

many thanks

Aw congrats for your DS! I lived in Halifax halls in first year way back in 2005, I don't know if that's still there or not. Lived in Walkley for second and third years, that was dawn good exercise!

Does anyone know how often they release the batches of accommodation? DS very sociable and wants to wait for an Endcliffe available room but I feel nervous not getting on and booking what’s currently available (all Crewe flats)..

What would be a good option for an engineer who will not want a hugely sociable flat (ASD) and would prefer to be close to the engineering department?

My DS has booked (Medicine) and says that people can leave bios on their rooms - little description of their interests etc He found this really useful. Maybe worth looking through once he has firmed his offer?

Decorhate · 10/04/2025 08:49

@Lampros Halifax Halls is now a hotel - we often stay there as it's handy when we drop off and pick up!

@11plusNewbie Endcliffe is definitely the best area to try for. There is usually plenty of accommodation at Sheffield - Ds got into Endcliffe after results day (Sheffield was his insurance so could not apply before that)

I think there are currently places in Lawrencefield for boys? My dd is in a room there with 3 other girls and the other 3 rooms are reserved for boys and all currently empty - unless they haven't opened them up for boys yet?

Ds thinks it’s every few days. He checked and maybe 72 hours later new ones were released.

NCTDN · 10/04/2025 21:17

@apricotdreams which flat is it ?

Tartanboots · 08/05/2025 13:23

Son's looking through the Sheffield accommodation at the moment. He would rather get a shared bathroom flat, to keep the cost down, but there are none available only ensuites. Does anyone know if this means that all the shared bathroom ones are booked up, or do they also get released in batches?
Also none of the available ones were in the area he wants but I think they are probably waiting to be released..
Not sure if it's worth choosing an ensuite one at this stage (so he can choose flatmates) or waiting for the preferences stage to see if he gets allocated a shared facilities one through that. It's a large cost difference.
Its a lot more complicated than when I went to uni!

TheGrimSmile · 08/05/2025 13:42

I called the accommodation office a few weeks ago as there was nothing left in the flats my dd wanted. They told me that none were full yet and that they just release in batches, a few flats at a time and that this happens right up until results day and beyond. There is a big difference in cost between a shared bathroom and ensuite. My dd has an ensuite but I'm wondering if it's worth an extra 1500 a year!

What's you ds studying @Tartanboots?

NeuroSpicyMumof3 · 08/05/2025 13:49

DD booked hers a while ago, but she was clear in where she wanted to go and did not want to chance it. £170 a week with an en-suite, shared kitchen between 6. I didn't think that was bad. At Nottingham it was £220 a week for 2 toilets and 1 shower between 4!

Hi, he's planning to do Geography. What's your daughter doing? That's good that she has got where she wanted.
He rang them too, they said the same about the batch releases but not what type, guess he'll have to keep checking.
I did wonder if he's left it a bit late, as there are not many shared ones compared to the ensuites. He took ages to accept his offer.

NCTDN · 08/05/2025 14:42

The en suite ones do feel bigger even though they’re probably not. DS isn’t massively tall but felt like the ceiling on the shared bathroom one was low.
We felt like it was fair to let him have en suite as that’s what his sister got in her first year (even though he’d prob be better with a shared one so someone else will clean itGrin).

I suppose the cheaper ones are maybe more popular. There's quite a big difference between the cheapest and the most expensive. I would get him to call again and ask specifically about the cheaper ones and whether they have all gone or not.
My dd is doing sociology. She's got a room in Lawrencefield. It's not the best as it's ground floor but she started to panic a bit too and just went for it.

NCTDN · 08/05/2025 19:31

I don’t think there’s much variation on prices? It’s either shared bathroom or en suite in endcliffe isn’t it? Lots of unis have much more varied pricing.

TheGrimSmile · 08/05/2025 23:05

I think it's 6200 for a shared bathroom and 8200- 8600 for an ensuite. That's quite a difference.

NeuroSpicyMumof3 · 09/05/2025 16:07

@TheGrimSmile My DD has chosen a city centre option as she didn't fancy Endcliffe. En-suite modern room for 7140 based on 42 weeks a year.

Oh yes I agree it’s a difference I didn’t mean that. I just meant that compared to other unis who have about ten different grades of accommodation and pricing, it’s much clearer.

Tartanboots · 09/05/2025 19:07

Went on the website again today about 3pm and some more spaces came up as we were on it. He's got a shared facilities room in the area he wanted so all good. They were literally getting booked up as we were looking, so must be popular.

Yes, the city centre ones look nice. And closer to walk for some courses.

Tartanboots · 09/05/2025 22:12

He's staying in Crewe flats. Just got the exams to get through now..

TheGrimSmile · 11/05/2025 19:18

Yes, fingers crossed for everyone

purplewibble · 18/05/2025 12:11

Ds picked his room yesterday. He’s opted for one of the city centre halls, close to the diamond - he’ll be studying mechanical engineering and didn’t fancy too long a walk!

troppibambini6 · 18/05/2025 12:49

@shreddiesallen court is facing engineering but is not very social at all with a lot of international students. It’s very convenient though.

For more social I would say endcliff or Ranmoor. We went for location for dd over those areas and it was a huge mistake. She going into 3rd year next year and is moving into a new house with some girls she’s met and I’m hoping things will be a bit better for her. By Xmas of first year most people had sorted who they were living with for second year and were finding houses. Think dd panicked a bit and they people she chose to live with just weren’t her tribe. She can’t wait to move!

purplewibble · 18/05/2025 13:26

@shreddiesds is also autistic and didn’t want anything particularly sociable - convenience most definitely the priority (and being close to trains and trams…).
