University offers coming in?

1000 replies

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

Some universities take so long to make a decision. Up to six months in some cases.
If they’re going to reject a student and they know early on, I think they should inform the students much earlier, rather than keep them hanging on. I haven’t heard of many rejections yet. I suspect universities have potential yes/maybe/no boxes.

I think they are being sensible about waiting for the applications to come in, balance intl/home fees etc, but you're right waiting till May makes zero sense.

We've had an offer come in but can't view it due to the UCAS maintenance from 6pm tonight until midnight on Sunday. Fine time to pick to do maintenance!

Memba · 15/12/2023 19:54

Offer just in from Exeter - Law with French Law. DD v chuffed as they emailed a couple of weeks ago to say she should t expect to hear from them til March!

MirandaWest · 15/12/2023 23:03

DD and a couple of friends had the Durham email today although some friends doing other subjects have had offers. She’s also waiting for Edinburgh.

O2HaveALittleHouse · 16/12/2023 17:19

Mine didn’t get the “on hold” mail from Durham - is a rejection pending? Others did for the same subject (maths). It’s hard to know whether to read anything into it.

Revengeofthepangolins · 16/12/2023 17:20

I don't think you can read anything into it. But the fact that the emails have gone out suggests they have shut up shop for the hodliays, so turn to shove it to the back of one's mind

O2HaveALittleHouse · 16/12/2023 17:22

Thanks @Revengeofthepangolins you’re right of course. I’m hoping that a rejection doesn’t arrive before Xmas anyhow even if it’s coming.

Silkiefloof · 16/12/2023 17:22

I wouldn't read anything into it O2 Didn't apply to Durham but that sounds like a your application is still being considered which everyone not notified is as well.

CornishGem1975 · 17/12/2023 09:52

Had an offer - the standard entry of BBB but website and on the open day, said this would be reduced to BBC with Core Maths. However nothing on the offer about that.

How does this work? Do we just assume they've decided not to reduce the offer?

Calmmumnot · 17/12/2023 09:56

Is UCAS system working again? Thought it was down until 6pm?

Rollergirl11 · 17/12/2023 09:57

@CornishGem1975 you could try emailing Admissions at the uni to query? DD did at one of her offers to ask about her EPQ and they offered to change the grade to reflect it if she requires it.

CornishGem1975 · 17/12/2023 10:05

Ah good idea. I'll get DD to do that.

It still says it's not but we were able to log on this morning and see everything.

Calmmumnot · 17/12/2023 10:11

@CornishGem1975 thanks and congrats on the offer!

Jaxx · 18/12/2023 08:00

FFS Durham - please stop sending emails unless it is with a decision or possibly asking for more info 🤬😂!

Yes I know I am a Grinch, given it was a happy holidays email but still …

Chocolatta · 18/12/2023 08:17

DD just got an offer from Lancaster, but no mention of reduced grade for her predicted A in the EPQ. She specifically chose Lancaster as their website states that they will reduce most offers by one grade for EPQ.They did offer a one grade reduction if she firms however. 🫤 Is it worth her contacting admissions? Course is geography. Thank you.

TheOnlyMrsW · 18/12/2023 08:36

DD has a personal letter from the head of department at Leicester talking about her personal statement and describing offer day arrangements, we were only talking about their offer last week! It's lower than advertised and DD thought it might be because they'd actually read her ps as it's not contextual 😊

Yes that was the same with us for Core Maths, specifically chose that uniform because they state they reduce. We've emailed admissions so will wait and see.

Drives me up the wall. DS1 was rejected in late Jan after three months of relentless emails (more than this year) including one about how amazing the uni was the morning of his rejection.

Chocolatta · 18/12/2023 09:36

CornishGem1975, did your DD also get a one grade reduction if they firmed? It could be that they have decided to offer this instead (and DD may not firm Lancaster) 🫤

Revengeofthepangolins · 18/12/2023 09:40

I have heard of helpful clarifications coming from admissions in these situations. Some universities seem to take the approach of saying they will waive a one grade failure but clearly one would rather have the explicit offer on those terms, so chase. Maybe also take a screen shot of the page that advertises this condition

No, no mention of any of that.

Exactly the same for DD. Reduced if she firms but no mention of her EPQ. She then had a really lovely personalised email from the faculty mentioning key points from her PS so she replied to that querying reduced offer for EPQ and they came back giving a new offer if she received B or higher in her EPQ. It’s definitely worth contacting them!

@Jaxx at this point I think Durham are trolling us!! 😂

mondaytosunday · 18/12/2023 10:36

@Jaxx @Revengeofthepangolins when my daughter was applying to Art Foundation courses, UAL sent practically weekly emails saying 'while you are waiting for a decision this is another reason why we are so fantastic...'. As the are world renowned they hardly needed to continually sell themselves snd it was extremely annoying, even more so if one is eventually rejected. She did eventually get an offer but weeks after the deadline to accept another course (which she is on now). She took a little bit of pleasure in saying 'thanks but no thanks', and they sent a follow up email survey asking why with one option being 'offer too late'.
