University offers coming in?

WombatChocolate · 27/09/2023 09:54

Just for nosiness and due to excitement about DS’s application going in, wondered if we could have a thread with people sharing offers as they are received, during this early phase.

Has anyone had an offer yet? Who will be first?

And totally realise that most won’t have applied yet and won’t do so for months and that’s absolutely fine and more normal.

@worcesterpear thanks!

Lightsabre · 09/01/2024 17:04

@catmomof3, it's hard to see them so down and not be able to 'fix' it. Ds despondent tonight too. He doesn't want a lot of sympathy and I think it's been a hard day at school for those who were rejected from Ox but he said his friends were supportive.

Silkiefloof · 09/01/2024 17:10

Thanks Writer Congrats on your DDs offers too.

Rollergirl My DD didn't go in until after she had heard at 10.30am and that worked well. Its quite brutal with them at school a third getting offers, two thirds rejected and others previously rejected pre interview. I was quite surprised she was waiting next to me - think ours was UCAS first but she checked UCAS before the notification and it arrived 15 mins pre notification. Hope your DD gets an offer.

Japan sounds wonderful Catmom Sorry about your DD. Mine said if she hadn't got in she needed another Maine Coon cat buying and for me not to say anything but its tricky.

Congrats on other offers. Have to decide which other 2 to apply to and what to do re insurance - Oxford's offer is A*AA with A in Maths but for Economics many universities have the same requirements. LSE will be same and I think Bristol is same.

WombatChocolate · 09/01/2024 18:38

So DS now has 3 offers for Exeter, York and Birmingham.

Is waiting for Durham. Was rejected today by Oxford - wasn’t very surprised not to get a place and whilst disappointed is stoical. Today has been a day of highs and lows for the Oxford crowd. It’s odd for those being rejected to go from ‘being in it’ to being ‘out’. But there are lots of good things to come for these guys, who will often have several other excellent offers to choose from.

I will start a new thread as this one runs out.

Great to hear all the offers that have arrived since this thread started in September! What a journey….and still a way to go. Good luck to all the young people and their wonderful parents gallantly going on the journey with them!

Thanks @WombatChocolate and sorry to hear your ds didn't get a place at Oxford. It will take time to process the news but he he has some other great offers too.

MirandaWest · 09/01/2024 21:30

Another of the “didn’t get an offer from Oxford” people here. DD seems OK but I think it might hit her more in a few days.

She was talking in an animated way about Bristol which she has an offer from so that is good. A long way from here although tbh so was Oxford! Her other choices are Belfast (has offer), Edinburgh and Durham (doesn’t actually want to go there). Durham the nearest (about an hour by train) plus DS is at Newcastle but looks like DD will be a way away wherever she goes.

Maggiethecat · 09/01/2024 21:44

Dixiechickonhols · 09/01/2024 07:03

@Maggiethecat what edged kings was they had an in person law talk (ucl was a video) and lecturer was very passionate about course and lots of options my dc was interested in. Their year abroad talk likewise was good as that’s what my dc wants too.

@Dixiechickonhols - it’s great when you have a passionate lecturer to engage you.
Dd actually went to Kings open day for history and was very underwhelmed. She eventually changed her mind to law but didn’t have the chance to do open days.
It feels a bit that her choices have been made without getting a feel of the uni/courses.

Maggiethecat · 09/01/2024 21:48

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 09/01/2024 07:22

@Maggiethecat - she applied for UCL and Kings originally along with Cambridge- but didn't do so well on the LSAT. So switched Kings for Manchester who made an offer straight away.
I think she still wants to be in London though.

@RaelImperialAerosolKid - interesting - Dd thinks she fluffed the LNAT so put Manchester early, along with Cambridge and Durham. She has Manchester offer too.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 09/01/2024 21:59

Manchester is the current favourite - big city and close and the law school is highly rated.

Congratulations to everyone who got offers today - they work so hard and the next few months are going to be testing.

Mine has an offer from Belfast (we are England) and currently it’s her favourite.
She’s also in the waiting for Durham but saying she doesn’t want to go there camp.

Everything I’ve read about LNAT is it’s hard to call. Those who think it went badly often score highly. My dd thought it went ok and essay choice was definitely kind to her. She’s had an offer from Glasgow which is an lnat University so I’m thinking it must have been ok. It’s madness they don’t tell them before applying though. Surely the multiple choice results could be shared so if you’ve got a low mark you can pick none lnat but still highly regarded universities.

DD has applied for History at St Andrews, Edinburgh, UCL, Durham and Bristol. 4 x A* predictions for A'Level. Only had 1 offer from Bristol. Waiting to hear from all the others. It's excruciating!

I agree we are waiting on UCL for history too.

Particularly excruciating knowing that some offers were made a few weeks ago!

Those are great predictions @Twickenham7. Fingers crossed she has good news soon.

Thanklesstasks · 10/01/2024 13:51

@Twickenham7 my DD had same predictions and applied to similar unis for history last year. Offers from all except St Andrews (rejected very late). Durham and Edinburgh offers also didn’t come through until ?April or May can’t remember. She didn’t apply to UCL.

Jaxx · 10/01/2024 14:11

Another History student parent here. My son has offers from Exeter, Leeds and UCL (sorry). He is expecting a no from Cambridge and really wants to go to Durham.

Since application he has decided he definitely wants to live away from home and in a small city, which rules out both Leeds and UCL.

I was reasonably confident that he would get a Durham offer eventually with A star predictions, excellent GCSE’s and reference and solid, if a little academic and London centric, personal statement. Then I scan read last years TSR Durham thread and saw a recent Whatdotheyknow request and unfortunately discovered there are a good chunk of A star candidates who don’t get offers. He would take a rejection from Durham far worse than one for Cambridge so 🤞. Exeter as a worst case scenario though is far from the end of the world thankfully.

Rollergirl11 · 10/01/2024 14:55

@Jaxx we are in a pretty similar boat to you but for English lit. DD isn’t hopeful for Cambridge. She has offers for Exeter, Warwick and Lancaster and is waiting on Durham. When she applied I think Durham was a bit of an outsider. But now I think she’s seeing it as a happy medium between Cambridge and her other offers. She’s no longer really interested in Warwick or Lancaster so it will be between Exeter and Durham. And the same as your DS I think she will take a rejection from Durham far harder than Cambridge so fingers crossed she gets one!

listsandbudgets · 10/01/2024 19:00

Has anyone had offers for Liverpool yet? (biochemistry)

we are up to 3 offers out of 5 now and of the remaining 2 one is a guaranteed offer as dd did a pathway scheme and the other is Liverpool.

Decided now is time to forgive Sussex for rejecting me in the 1990s as they've just made an offer to DD Grin

WriterOfWrongs · 10/01/2024 19:03

Grin @listsandbudgets They made an offer to my DD too, and she's just booked an offer holder day with them. They're her insurance.

WombatChocolate · 10/01/2024 19:05

Just pointing out that a follow-on thread to this one has started…..see the link about 10 posts above here. This one is close to being full. See you on thread 2.

It's always nice to get a neat 1000 posts though Grin

Twickenham7 · 10/01/2024 20:35

@Thanklesstasks That's really helpful to know, thank you. I will expect a long wait and expect a rejection from St Andrews. She only applied as liked the Modern History course there, but knows that it's very unlikely.

Twickenham7 · 10/01/2024 20:39

@Jaxx Congratulations to your son on his offers - that's great! I hope it all works out and that he gets an offer from Durham, but crazy that it's still so uncertain despite grade predictions

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 12/02/2024 10:14

Any one heard anything Bath?
