Accommodation at Nottingham Uni

DD got a place through clearing last Thursday. They guarantee an offer of accommodation. She put an application in immediately and then dashed off for a fortnight's holiday!

Not heard anything yet. Anyone have any knowledge of accommodation at Nottingham?

We still have our 14 year old DD at home and she is great company so it’s nice to be able to spend time with her knowing there’s another 4 more years until she goes off!
I hope everyone’s else’s DC are getting used to being more independent and are looking forward to next week when studies begin! Our DS is taking up languages again which I am delighted with and if it wasn’t for clearing wouldn’t be happening so I am feeling very grateful for the whole process!

Had a sweet text saying she misses having her food cooked for her. SHe's chosen her first couple of modules and is excited about starting them.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 29/09/2023 21:08

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one struggling a bit with DS being away.

I think I might have found the issue. It seems that he's been out almost every night and tonight he's out again, this time on a pub crawl.

Allloveisbeautiful · 29/09/2023 21:22

So DS has not managed to access his timetable yet 🤦🏻‍♀️not sure why but hoping he’ll ask someone who’s on the same course about it… he also needs to register for student finance at uni because they have his details and that he’s had an offer but not that he’s accepted it….trying not to worry because his rent due on Monday but DH says it’s his responsibility to sort 😬

Allloveisbeautiful · 29/09/2023 21:24

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto yes our DS seems to have been out a lot too and is having lots of sleeps which is a good thing but he’ll need to get into some sort of routine next week!!

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 29/09/2023 22:31

So DS has not managed to access his timetable yet

Our DS said the same yesterday. He's been allocated a group they he'll be doing projects with. Asked him if he'd set up a WhatsApp Group with them and could he ask there. Followed by radio silence. There is obviously no WhatsApp Group.

Just going he's sorted it out today...

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 29/09/2023 22:32

I think it will be easier once they've done a couple of weeks of the timetable. DS is much better with a routine.

Blubell46 · 30/09/2023 07:22

Ds is missing home...he said everyone is really friendly and food is really good in halls.

Hopefully this will get less and less as time goes...weekends must be the hardest!

Sssudio · 30/09/2023 07:48

@Blubell46 same here, he said last night he's struggling so has booked in to see a counsellor. In the summer his grandpa was found dead, his grandma nearly died, I've had treatment for cancer and have also been quite unwell. And it all seems to have hit him at once.

He's also been someone who's had more female than male friends but his flat is all boys and he's not really met any girls yet. Hoping once he starts lectures he'll make more friends which will help.

I think this is why many unis don't do a whole Freshers week any more, the lack to structure is not helpful to those struggling to integrate.

Blubell46 · 30/09/2023 07:51

@Sssudio I agree - ds needs to be doing something...his course is full on - so am hoping once it gets going they will be too busy to think of home...

I am so sorry for the loss of your dad.x

ErnestMilton · 30/09/2023 08:02

I don't think it helps that I've seen him briefly, very briefly in FaceTime and he's only answered a handful of texts

Do you have a DH who could have a word about showing some consideration. I know we're keen to encourage them into adulthood but part of being a grown up is not being rude/inconsiderate enough to ignore texts from people who love them.

Not having a pop at your DS btw!

Hope everyone gets their timetable sorted. My son has got his and it looks good although it's fuller that I thought it would be. He's got 3 lectures / seminars a day but does get one free day which is good. I suppose it is only 12 hours a week but looks a lot! It's history so lots of essay writing but it doesn't look like there are any exams at all.

OneInEight · 30/09/2023 08:13

Can i join in. ds2 has just started too and am a nervous wreck for him as he has a lot of anxiety. Anyway he has managed 6 days which is probably 5 more than I expected him too. He is in self-catering and am pleased he has been managing to cook although seems to have perfected the art of getting lots of free food somehow. He has got part of his timetable but thinks more to come as not all modules added.

Allloveisbeautiful seemed to be lots of hoops to get registration and student finance through. So form on student finance website and approval but then had to be registered at the uni before payment (online form and in-person registration (actually this just means logging onto the uni intranet) before money was sent to his account. A pain because being in private halls his rent was due before he got his loan so had to lend him the money.

Allloveisbeautiful · 30/09/2023 08:30

@OneInEight what course is your DS doing? Thanks for the tips re student intranet-our DS seemed to think something similar as said ‘you just need to be able to get on to the Wifi’😂😂
Which accommodation is your DS in? Ours is in Deakins Place… where are all the free meals from?! I know there’s free Domino’s available but not heard of any others?!

Allloveisbeautiful · 30/09/2023 10:28

@Sssudio sounds like you have had a very challenging year and all credit to your DS for getting through his A levels as well-can’t have been easy. It must hit them more when they are away I guess but I hope the counsellor provides appropriate support and reassurance for him…

Sssudio · 30/09/2023 16:45

Thanks, I was just impressed he was able to book an appointment online, and thus week. I work for a London uni and our mental services are absolutely swamped

Sssudio · 01/10/2023 11:29

Aargh DS thinks his foot night be broken as he can't even get to loo without a lot of pain. Very hard to try and deal with this long distance

jellycat · 01/10/2023 11:53

Oh no @Sssudio, did he fall over? I wonder if anyone in the hall has a car and could take him over to QMC?

jellycat · 01/10/2023 11:55

Is he in Broadgate?

jellycat · 01/10/2023 12:04

I asked ds if he knows anyone with a car who could take someone to A & E but he doesn’t. (He’s not in Broadgate but close)

mumsneedwine · 01/10/2023 12:11

@Sssudio Uber v good in Nottingham. Not far to QMC. Hope he's ok.

Sssudio · 01/10/2023 12:20

Yes he's Broadgate but is in Uber, 111 have sent him to the UTC which is by the BBC building in the centre.

He was playing nerf in a lecture theatre yesterday and fell trying to climb over an upturned desk (!).

He's ok, I think it might just be a bit of panic as he's never hurt himself (illness yes, injuries no). Just so hard to strike the balance between 'you're fine' and 'go get seen now'!. Hard to know if he'd be reacting the same if he was more settled.

Thanks for support though

jellycat · 01/10/2023 12:21

Hope he’s ok and that he gets seen quickly.

londonmummy1966 · 01/10/2023 13:25

@Sssudio hope he's OK - my DD is in Broadgate if he needs anything.

Sssudio · 01/10/2023 13:35

Bless you thank you. He's chipper but long wait
