Applying for 2023 - all welcome thread 2

I have started a new thread as our previous one is nearly full. Name changed so I won’t forever be the OP. Originally for non early entry applicants I am sure anyone who would like to can be on this thread as we wait for final decisions to come in, negotiate UCAS extra and hope that the results will match the offers come August.

OP posts:

This appeared in the Student Room Southampton applicants thread a little while ago:

‘There are three more visit days left for offer holders to book onto, these are: 11th March, 25th March and 13th May, but note that available dates will depend on your course. The link to book onto these offer holder days can be found in your offer email/pack’

Although one is in the past and one in three days time. We don’t have a decision from Southampton yet so, if DS is accepted, we will have to hope there is space in May.

There is nothing from Cardiff either (where DS does have an offer) so DS intends to do a DIY trip to there too.

@MarshaBradyo my 2nd son taking his A levels this year Predicted A star A Star A Maths/Physics/Further Maths( I have another applying for Econ this year but took them last year) has offers from Warwick for Mech Engineering (AAA) Exeter (AAB) and Bristol (AAA)he got rejected for Mech Eng but they offered him Mechanical and electrical. Rejected from UCL and still waiting on Durham..

WarningToTheCurious · 22/03/2023 11:34

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun DS was sent a welcome pack thingy with a QR code to use to book an offer holder day, but on scanning it came up with “no available sessions for this event” for Comp Sci. He does vaguely know somebody there so has at least had some feedback from a current student.

WarningToTheCurious · 22/03/2023 11:37

There is an email address if no dates available, so DS could give that a try.

Tree543 · 22/03/2023 13:21

My ds received an offer from Southampton yesterday for Comp Science. The email he got from them didn't mention offer days so he has emailed them. I cant understand why they don't time the offers and offer days better. We didn't go to the open day. It wasn't one of his favourites but we would have gone to the offer day to see if he changed his mind.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 22/03/2023 15:35

@WarningToTheCurious I'm interested to hear about your ds's experience at Edinburgh and being underwhelmed. Ds is waiting to hear back from Edinburgh, but already has other offers for Comp Sci. If he's offered a place at Edinburgh, I'm not sure what to advise him. It rates very high for compsci, but it seems like the lectures are huge, there's no real tutorial system etc and the course might be a bit theoretical. I'm worried they're just getting by on their name recently...

WarningToTheCurious · 22/03/2023 16:06

@FriendlyLaundryMonster

My older DS did a different STEM course and, even before Covid, I was surprised at how few contact hours there were - it’s a course that would have been 9-5 lectures and labs in my day and had a reputation for a heavy workload. I don’t think there was much in the way of tutorials, and lecture classes were huge.

Some of the lecturers were poor, although fortunately lectures were recorded and could be rewatched to work out what they trying to explain. The department office lost a key piece of group work and, despite there being a receipt issued to prove it had been handed in, the group lost a large amount of marks. Getting access to specialist uni facilities for his final project took months despite constant promises that it would be sorted imminently.

Maybe these are issues that occur everywhere, and they may be a function of so many people now going to uni, but I found it a very different experience to my own. On the upside, he had a great personal tutor, had a good social life (despite the Covid times) and Edinburgh is a great city in which to spend 4 or 5 years.

Update here🎉🎉🎉DS got an offer through Extra for Bath. Over the moon for him after months of stress

So so delighted!!!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

NotDonna · 22/03/2023 17:28

Good luck to your DS @DreadlocksMadeMeHappy my eldest DD is currently on an apprenticeship with PwC (not tech and obvs not Flying Start) 18 months in and seem to be a great company to work for. The application process is quite something though isn’t it? Not a bad thing to go through regardless of the outcome as I’m sure application for grad schemes will be similar.
@Buttermilk72 those stats for Durham are quite shocking! Are they applications v offers or applications v accepted. Either way 😱 I also wonder how other universities compare. The higher regarded London ones will be similar I expect. Is he going to wait for Durham or start looking at extra? It’s such a tough decision.

Tindrum · 22/03/2023 22:23

Has anyone got any experience/thoughts about the English courses and general university experience at Leeds and Bristol? DD has offers at both and looking most likely (rejected by Cambs after interview and is waiting on St Andrews and UCL - had an interview there ages ago)

DreadlocksMadeMeHappy · 23/03/2023 09:06

Ah, @NotDonna you replied to me on the thread I started about it! Thanks for the feedback. My son received a holding email telling him they'd be calling shortly. His friend got a rejection email at the same time. So we're still hopeful, but trying to be cool, calm and collected! Not easy x

DreadlocksMadeMeHappy · 23/03/2023 09:06

Ah shit. Random kiss.

NotDonna · 23/03/2023 09:35

DD had a call yesterday from a current student on her potential course at Bath to chat about any questions she has. How cool is that? It’s her favourite anyway but what a great opportunity to go through her queries. She’s at the offer day on Wednesday. It’s all becoming very real albeit a fair bit of work required to achieve those pesky grades.

Imperial seems to be taking for ever to issue offers for physics or chemistry. Looking at TSR, many applicants were interviewed in mid-November 2022 and have yet to hear one way or another. It is so stressful to be still waiting when we are almost at Easter. I suppose they are inundated with international applications and perhaps prioritise those.

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 23/03/2023 14:14

DS got an Imperial offer for molecular bioengineering this week so things look like they are moving. It's his 5th choice on a medicine app so won't be going as he got medicine offers. And it's higher than all his med offers!

Roundthecorneranduptheroad · 23/03/2023 21:01

Hello, may I join please? Am mum of a Y12. Do any of you have DC holding offers for modern languages and would you be willing to share them please? Will really help us in narrowing it all down!

Congrats to all your DC - this thread is a delight to read with everyone now firming and insuring!

@cmcc22 Update... After being rejected from Manchester on the 14th Feb, my son emailed for feedback as to why he had been rejected. This resulted in a couple of emails back and forth. The last being my son asking 'what on my personal statement made you think I wasn't enthusiastic enough about the course...' this last email was 3 weeks ago. They came back yesterday saying that they have reconsidered and offered him an unconditional place. It's for BA Economics, not BSc but he/we are so happy!! He is like a changed person, its so nice to see him smiling again :-). Still waiting on Durham and LSE but it's nowhere near as stressful now we know he has a place....

Tree543 · 24/03/2023 16:01

@Buttermilk72 fantastic news! Really pleased for him.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 24/03/2023 16:24

Great news, Buttermilk. So pleased for your DS.

PettsWoodParadise · 24/03/2023 16:35

Oh @Buttermilk72 congrats to your DS and well done him for his well thought through and successful method of questioning, his resilience, tact and determination will take him far.

Great news. I'm delighted for you both. Glad he persevered. Also goes to show that there decision making can be flawed. Manchester is great for Econ. My DS didn't apply there as it's too close to home 🤣

KittyMcKitty · 24/03/2023 17:00

@Buttermilk72 great news! I have a child at Manchester and they love the Uni.

Tree543 · 24/03/2023 17:11

I've seen other cases on WIWIKAU where applicants appealed against their rejections and were then given offers. So it is worth doing.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 24/03/2023 17:53

Congratulations @Buttermilk72 So pleased to hear your son's news. Ds just got an offer for compsci at Edinburgh of 3 A stars. Just waiting to hear from St Andrews now.

Aurea · 24/03/2023 18:42

Another Edinburgh comp sci offer today. It's for the MInf five years masters course and it's an unconditional offer as he already has the grades. 😊
