I have started a new thread as our previous one is nearly full. Name changed so I won’t forever be the OP. Originally for non early entry applicants I am sure anyone who would like to can be on this thread as we wait for final decisions to come in, negotiate UCAS extra and hope that the results will match the offers come August.

@Cantonet well done to your dd for her UCL offer! That’s brilliant. Did she have an interview or an offer straight away? I’m just hoping no news is good news! Do you mind saying what the offer was for UCL? Edinburgh are a pain and take ages! It’s all rather nerve wracking!

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2023 06:59

I was wondering if anyone’s dc has mechanical engineering offers and on what type of grades?

Buttermilk72 · 21/03/2023 07:35

My son is still waiting to hear from Durham and LSE (economics) he really wants to wait to hear from Durham (He has 4Astars 3 achieved, and no offers) before going through Extra…So I thought I would look at some admission stats. I was pretty shocked. For Economics at Durham. These are applications/offers for last year. UK non contextual 430/70, UK contextual 85/80, outside UK 465/335… so as my son is a UK non contextual 🤦‍♀️ I was really shocked at the percentages. I’m not sure he would have even applied if we knew the odds.. www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/economics_admissions_statistics_21#incoming-2225060

Buttermilk72 · 21/03/2023 07:48

@cmcc22 fingers crossed for you that he is successful. My Son has emailed Bath too, they have places on a Maths and economics course. so the second we had from Durham, that’s the plan. Although with the stats in my last post I think he should probably pull Durham now

bguthb90 · 21/03/2023 08:28

Agree @Buttermilk72, I don't think my DS would have applied for all 3 of Durham, Edinburgh and Exeter if we'd been aware of the such high ratios of International offers vs UK offers for their Business schools.

His school are so out of touch with this too.

Luckily, Bristol have given him an offer but he would like at least one of the others so he feels like he's making a choice

lovefizzycolabottles · 21/03/2023 08:31

So true. The offer rate stats are scary for non-contextual non-intl’s. We now realise that UCL was 1 in 7 last year (they have now emailed now to say many more people have applied this year and they are still working through the applications so dread to think what it is now..), St A for RUK was 7% offer rate last year. I now realise that the general acceptance stats on websites are misleading and I think people need to be doing or looking for recent subject freedom of information requests before making choices. DDs friend just got rejected from Leeds with 3 A stars predicted and that was one with a 3 A requirement she thought was a safer bet so looking at ucas tariff stuff deffo only gives half the story. @Buttermilk72 gosh nabbing that Bath course in ucas extra if there are giving positive noises about offering before it goes might be wise…. Bath would be a fab place to study. Fingers crossed to your DS.

cmcc22 · 21/03/2023 08:42

@Buttermilk72 good luck to your DS. The offer rates you shared are staggering - how do they have any chance! My DS has worked so hard for his predicted A stars and had rejections from courses that say their entry requirements are AAB. They either need to change entry requirements or be clear in acceptance rates. My DS doesn't have further maths but would have liked to apply to the Economics with Maths course at Bath. Just hope he gets offer now and then can choose the most economics based optional modules when he gets there. It's such a stressful time for them while trying to study as wellAngry

Buttermilk72 · 21/03/2023 08:42

@lovefizzycolabottles and @bguthb90 Universities should be transparent and put these statistics on their website against each course. Any other application/offer stats are extremely misleading.

bguthb90 · 21/03/2023 09:29

Yes @Buttermilk72 - just another improvement, in the long list, that could be made to admissions' processes.

The one thing I find particularly grating is that Durham are still advertising the course on UCAS Extra, for international applicants only, that my DS has applied for/is awaiting a response for.

Cantonet · 21/03/2023 09:57

@Bobadob18 DD applied at the end of November. She got requests to submit Manchester & UCL Portfolios pretty soon after the application. Then a Manchester offer in January & a UCL offer a couple of weeks ago I think. The offer is their standard offer - 2A's & a B.
Pretty low for her. Manchester is 3×A.
I've been looking at the ratios for success at the Bartlett. I think it was 1 in 9 in previous years. However this year they've had a very large number of applications apparently. So maybe it's that much harder for them to decide on who to pick & it's taking a lot longer than normal.
@Buttermilk72 I really feel for your ds.
It must seem very unfair to him. I'm amazed at the massive numbers of international students applying for economics. It's a very popular & competitive subject in DDS school too.
Other subjects are very slow at making offers this year . Though the medical specialties seem to be faster this year.
Having been thru' the treadmill of dd1 applying for vet. Med. 5 years ago I remember it as the most stressful period of my life 😂

It is frustrating. It's because they have quotas for the different groups of students. They need the international fees to subsidise the home students.

londonmummy1966 · 21/03/2023 14:39

@NotDonna - yes I am aware of that - @tealgate and I have DC applying for the same department. I have also told DD to get in touch with Cardiff......

mightyducks · 21/03/2023 14:51

Anyone heard from Glasgow?? Offer day is next Tuesday but still heard nothing here - had the application for 4 month! Getting very frustrated….

Bobadob18 · 21/03/2023 16:07

@Cantonet thanks for the info. Thats useful to know about statistics. We will just have to wait and see and hope it works out. She has got Newcastle and Kingston offers so all is not lost but desperate for UCL!

TheFallenMadonna · 21/03/2023 16:27

My daughter is waiting for an interview for Warwick. It was booked for 10 March, but they cancelled that morning and told her to rebook for 30th! She is applying with grades, so any offers are unconditional and no insurance needed. She has an offer from her other pre match favourite, has been to the offer holders' day, loved it all over again and is feeling a bit frustrated with the wait. Next offer holders' Day at Warwick is end of April, and if she did get an offer (she's not sure how interivew will go, although her grades measure up), she would want to visit to compare. Ugh. DS had his all wrapped up by the end of February when he applied in 2019.

cmcc22 · 21/03/2023 21:18

Update here🎉🎉🎉DS got an offer through Extra for Bath. Over the moon for him after months of stress

Aurea · 21/03/2023 21:20

That's fab news! 😀
That will be a huge weight off.....

ACJane · 21/03/2023 21:25

Fantastic news! Sounds like switching to Xtra was a smart move.

PacificState · 21/03/2023 21:50

@MarshaBradyo DS2 has mech eng offers from Manchester (2 x A star + A) and Warwick (A star and two As). Crickets so far from Bath and Bristol.

AnonymousThreadStarter · 22/03/2023 06:53

So pleased for your DS, cmcc22 - Bath is a fantastic place to study.

@cmcc22 Fantastic news.. I’m so pleased for you and your son .. They came back pretty quickly too 👍🏻

lovefizzycolabottles · 22/03/2023 06:57

@cmcc22 yippee!!! What brilliant news. Congrats everyone else on all the offers too.

DreadlocksMadeMeHappy · 22/03/2023 07:11

Can I join? Ds has been fairly cavalier with his choices imo. He's only applied to bham and filled up the rest of the form with potential insurances at Coventry.

His reasoning is he's applied for the flying start technology degree apprenticeship at Birmingham. If he doesn't get a place his application reverts to the regular comp sci course. He's done really well and got through all of the recruitment stages for pwc. He should hear whether he's been successful on or before Friday. Apparently only in one in ten get offered. But it means he's not yet holding an offer for bham!

So nervous for him, if he doesn't get this, or his offer for 'normal' comp sci I think he is going to be gutted.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 22/03/2023 07:38

Good luck for Friday, Dreadlocks, everthing crossed for your DS.

Great news about Bath cmcc22, congratulations to your DS.

WarningToTheCurious · 22/03/2023 10:52

I’ve also been lurking.

DS has offers for Comp Sci at Southampton and Cardiff, rejection from Bristol (but was told he could change application to other subjects, guess ones they are struggling to fill), and still waiting on Edinburgh and Bath.

Think he’d really like to get an Edinburgh offer (in theory he’s eligible for a contextual, but their offer rate to English students is low) but he’s happy enough with his offers so far. Not bothered about the Bristol rejection (and I was not unhappy given the accommodation horror stories) but I would be very happy with an offer from Bath. His big brother went to Edinburgh and I was underwhelmed with his experience given its reputation - plus it would be another £20k in fees and living costs.

Can’t find any offer holder days for Soton and Cardiff so we might just go for a nosey on our own.
