The worst performers in school across teh UK I believe are white working class boys. Immigrants often have parents who have a drive to succeed who moved continents for their children to have a better life and the bottom line is their children work harder on the whole and so get good exam results.

MummyJ as to what you should do, just try to give the children high expectations. Read them a bed time story every night. Have them read to you. Talk a lot of home. Read loads of books. My parents paid for speech and drama/elocution lessons from the age of 5, piano lessons from age 7 etc which probably helped although I was certainly a shy child.

Books were one of the main reasons I have been reasonably successful as all those hours and hours of reading as a teenager gave me sucvh a window into history, other countries, what people do etc etc. and helped set my own expectations for myself.

@Xenia I said to DDs last week that I’d have killed to have instant, immediate access to books when I was a child/teen. Our local library was dire and things for their children were not on my parents list of priorities. As a result, we have hundreds of books at home, and I’ve had a Kindle and Audible sub pretty much since they existed. We also borrow e-books via the library as our rural library is only open two afternoons a week.

Curiosity and imagination are the most important things to nurture in children, IMO. It’s easy, free and whilst it can be tiresome, DD6 is very into dinosaurs at the moment and tonight in the bath, she asked if they could cry. Looked it up on Google once she was settled in bed and we both learnt something new!

Yes I’m aware of the stats on working class white boys. But immigrants/ ethnic minorities shouldn’t be treated as a whole either. Each group has varying success rates.

@Rummikub
Maybe cultural differences mean some value education and high paying jobs more than others. There are also questions over participation in family business, marriage and attitude towards jobs for women. I agree there are differences.
