@Thethingswedoforlove nothing about last year was close to normality. These early offers are more back to pre covid days, which is a good sign.
Gearing up here for probably DDs last Xmas day at home for a few years. Not sure F1 or 2s ever get the day off. Just need to kick this flu thing into touch before Sunday so we can eat the mountains of food in the house.
Merry Christmas 🎄

opoponax · 21/12/2022 18:17

Merry Christmas and wishing you all a good break from the med school application madness. Thank you for all your support and wishing all the DC the best of luck for the coming year. 🍾🍸🍸🌲

Happy Christmas all! 🌲🍾

@mumsneedwine is your DD staying in the Nottingham area for F1? You might get her again next year, but good to hope for the best bit plan for the worst!

mumsneedwine · 21/12/2022 18:53

@Monkey2001 Trent is not her first choice, but the lottery that is the SJT could mean she ends up anywhere. We reckon they might need to offer cash for London this year as no one is applying due to cost.
DD is happy to work Xmas so people with kids don't need to. She's a good kid 😊

Monkey2001 · 21/12/2022 19:19

Surprising re London, it is usually the most competitive choice.

mumsneedwine · 21/12/2022 19:42

Yup. V unscientific research (DD and friends) but it seems v few are applying to London as they can't afford to live there. They realise they'll have a better standard of living elsewhere. Why be poor in Tooting when you can live on the beach in Truro.

Thethingswedoforlove · 21/12/2022 20:51

@mumsneedwine have THE BEST time with your family this Christmas. You soooo deserve it. Hope whomever is ill properly kicks it and you all feel really healthy and well for the weekend.

Cathpot · 21/12/2022 23:09

@christmaspartyseason
Lovely to hear the positive offer news- great way to start the holidays!
Hope everyone gets a good break.

medParent · 23/12/2022 16:45

Merry Christmas everyone.
@christmaspartyseason Congratulations on the offer.
Regarding Leicester, my daughter has interview on 06JAN. It is online.

Her friends who did the interview last week, Leicester sent email with link to upload the GCSE results and also the link to attend online interview two weeks before the interview.
My daughter has not got this email. On wednesday she did get email saying please contact uni if you have not got the email about the links.
She saw this email only today because this week she has flu (just getting bit better) and didn't check earlier.
She tried to call them today. Because of holiday season, she couldn't speak to admissions team. The lady she spoke to said, mostly everyone left for holidays and will be back on 4th Jan. She suggested to send an email in case someone in admissions checks during holidays. She has sent the email now.
It was bit of panic morning.
I am thinking, even if the email is received on 04th Jan, it is max an hours work to upload the required details.
Has anyone got any experience about similar situation?

Needmoresleep · 23/12/2022 17:09

I am really surprised to hear what mumsneedwine says about London. It was not the case last year and there is no obvious reason for things to have changed. Many students we know are really keen to stay in or experience the capital or to have London teaching hospital experience. The assumption is that it is ferociously competitive so chances of getting a place are low.

Particularly since Oxbridge stopped offering the chance of clinical in London. Overseas students also seem to like the chance of training at a well known London hospital. Plus obviously there are a fair number who come from London or the South East or trained here and want to stay. In contrast I have not heard any mention of Trent as a place to head for. That said quite a lot of students seem to want to shift nearer home so Manchester seems popular amongst students who come from the North, and a friend of DDs headed home to Birmingham.

DD is very dyslexic and is not good at timed tests so does not expect to do well on SJT. She would love to get London, which will be her first choice, but does not expect to get it. Instead she has focussed on which of the less popular deaneries appeal most. She sees it as a positive and a chance to live somewhere quite different. She has been reassured that told that if she does well there will be later opportunities to apply for London jobs.

mumsneedwine · 23/12/2022 17:17

But you need to be very wealthy to live in London. And most people aren't.
What is a 'prestigious' hospital, because names don't matter to most doctors, just the patients they will treat. London does not offer a good standard of living or any better training so why live there ? In fact talking to many doctors over the years they all say that smaller district hospitals offer the best training placements. Maybe for CT1 and onwards it makes a difference but for F years they want to have some kind of life too.
And not sure why the need to trash Trent 😂.
Good luck to everyone with interviews coming up. By the time you get to your F1 it will all be very different with a new nationwide exam.

@medParent don't worry about certificates. Our DS lost his. He emailed both Leicester and Liverpool. Both unis replied to upload them when he gets the new one. This will not impact his interview

Thank you for the reply @kk10
Certificates are there.
we have not received the email invite from Leicester to upload the certs and aslo there is link in the same email to join the online interview it seems.
In Summary, we have interview scheduled on 06Jan and waiting for the email invite with links to attend interview . :-)

Monkey2001 · 28/12/2022 13:34

@medParent my DS has the request for documents etc, his interview is on 13th Jan. It came from [email protected] Wed, 21 Dec 2022, 9:25 am
Subject: Further Information regarding your interview at Leicester Medical School

I suggest a search in email using those details. Don't forget to check Promotions.

ASeagull23 · 01/01/2023 09:43

HNY all! I have a question for those more knowledgeable than me about halls for med students. No offers here yet, but my DD tells me that bc medicine offers only come in March/April, if she is lucky enough to get one, she will not have first choice of halls bc she will be applying late. How do first year halls applications work?

mumsneedwine · 01/01/2023 11:03

@ASeagull23 depends on the Uni. V few do on a first come basis and most will allocate after results day. An exception is Nottingham who do it in order of application - but you'll still get on campus in April.
Let us know which Unis and we can probably give you their policy. Bristol def after results day 😊

Monkey2001 · 01/01/2023 11:06

Accommodation allocation is different everywhere. A lot of places we looked at do not allocate accommodation until offers are unconditional (eg Newcastle, St Andrews, Oxbridge). Some offer early and the mist popular places go early (Nottingham, Sheffield). You need to check the accommodation policies of her choices, they will all be on the websites.

The most popular is usually modern en suite, which DS doesn't want because it is so expensive, he would prefer to have more money to spend on food!

Monkey2001 · 01/01/2023 11:09

😂"Snap" again @mumsneedwine !

Happy New Year all, hope it is full of offers for our lovely DC.

mumsneedwine · 01/01/2023 11:11

@Monkey2001 😂 it's like we are one person 🥳. Happy new year, and I wish for that one lovely offer for everyone's lovely DC.

ASeagull23 · 01/01/2023 11:17

DD has applied to Nottingham, Manchester, Bristol and Southampton. It is confusing - I can see that each uni is different on accommodation and only Southampton is specific about when medical school offers will be sent out….

mumsneedwine · 01/01/2023 11:28

@ASeagull23 only one that offers accommodation early out if those is Notts. But in any previous year medics have still got on campus accommodation - I know this as my own DD is there. May have less choice but the halls are pretty similar so doesn't really matter.
Others he will apply once firmed and then get an offer after results day. For Bristol you put 9 halls in order of preference and should get one in too 5 (they've built loads of new halls so can now give to all first years).

mumsneedwine · 01/01/2023 11:29

Only weird Uni is Liverpool as you can apply from January, regardless of an offer. You won't be allocated until August though.

ASeagull23 · 01/01/2023 11:38

Thanks @mumsneedwine and @Monkey2001. What a thing to be stressing about on 1 Jan! Well, hopefully stressing about since there are no actual offers yet😂

Cathpot · 03/01/2023 14:10

Happy New Year to everyone, hope the holidays were good and all the kids are on an even keel.
Quick question- DD has a short written exam , online for Cardiff this week , separate to the rest of the interview. and has next to no information about what to expect. She was hoping for a follow up email but basically she has the booking email and the link to use for the test but nothing else. She has been in an EPQ frenzy all holiday so this was on the back burner. Any thoughts at all?
